You can arrange transports to get a shelter or rescue dog to you! So I would definitely check Petfinder for your shaggy dog and then see what can be arranged (meet halfway, get rescue people together to drive in a "train" to your area) if s/he isn't in your immediate area.

Though, if appearance or breed isn't an issue, pits are phenomenal dogs, especially with children. So that might be something to consider.

I agree....Pits are number one in my books when it comes to living with children. Those dogs will put up with anything and think that it is all fun and games.

I have a American Staffordshire Terrier and although I don't have children of my own, I have a lot of friends with children and I always take him to the local park. As rowdy and playful he is with my I wonder sometimes how he can be so calm and loving and gently playful when there are kids around.

If you do end up getting a dog from the shelter (any dog) please make sure that they have done temperment tests on the dog. Some shelter dogs have come from ugly situations and may not be well suited for a home with a child. Also when you go to the shelter bring your child with you so you can see how the dog interacts with him/her and how your child interacts with the dog.

in my opinion, that dog is a border collie/ dalmation mix. I could be terribly wrong, but that what he looks like to me.

His head is shaped like a dalmation's...

Not always, like someone said. WHWTs are not recommended for homes that have children below 7-10 (we don't generally adopt to homes with kids below 7), and most breeders/rescues won't place them in homes with young children. Though sturdy dogs, the two often times don't mix well.

The beneful dog you seek is a Springer Spaniel-Border Collie Mix, I have seen similar mixes in shelters from time to time and I knew one, Bandit, who belonged to a friend in Denver who I was able to ask who got together. A lot more laid back than a Border Collie. Email me if you want me to send you a pic of Bandit.

I agree it is a cool mix. Me, I have Calla, a Golden Retriever/Chow and Winston a Malamute/German Shepherd.

Heh, well watch the commercial, the guy is only slightly more hyper than the dog running around the house and in the end swimming with him.

Bandit was similar, always on patrol around the many acres my friend had.
