I am a responsible dog owner. I know the ins and outs of my dog (speaking about Buddy here). I know when he is having a bad day, I know when he is having a good day. I know when that pesky little puppy is getting on his nerves because I know Buddy.. his temperment, his body language...to a T.

Why is it so much for me to ask the same of others? Why are people so ignorant and irresponsible these days? I just don't get it. I ask myself these questions almost daily and I still do not have an answer. And all of these irresponsible people have dogs! People are ruining dogs! I just can't stand it anymore!!!

Here is what happened.

We go to the dog park, it's a slow day being a holiday and the boys are excited. Buddy gets to go in first and so he does. Then Banzai and I go in. Not less than a minute that we are in the gate, this golden retreiver is all over Banzai... growling, snapping, being dominant. I get the dog off and curse about the absentee owner in my mind.

Then this dog goes after Banzai again and the owner decides to claim him and say that he's "just playing and he's never hurt anything before nor would he." Fine, we go about our merry way.

Buddy is playing fetch and enjoying himself. Out of nowhere, the darn GR is after him. Nipping, attempting to hump, snarling, the whole nine yards. By this time we have had enough. Buddy is under our voice control at all times and is being good, now we are trying to get this GR to back off.

At this time, the situation is dangerous. This is simply not play. This is aggression. I am fending the dog off while the owner simply stands by. I step away and call Buddy to me and the dog attacks Buddy.

All of a sudden Buddy is yelping on the ground, all bystanders rush to him to ensure that he's okay while the guy with GR grabs his dog and starts walking away.... accusing Buddy of biting his dog! Buddy had his d@mned tennis ball in his mouth the entire time, he was only trying to get away. Whenever this dog approached Buddy, Buddy took the submissive stance and went to the ground. He had no interest in this dog whatsoever.

Then the guy starts yelling at us, telling us that if we don't like dogs we shouldn't go to the dog park. All the while accusing Buddy of biting his dog. Which is why his dog acted the way it did. D@mned idiot.

So, I've had enough. We got his name and his phone number. I am filing a report. After speaking with the bystanders, it appears this dog had issues the moment he walked in the gate. I have simply had enough.

Un-neutered, un-trained, male dogs do not belong in the dog park.

Some owners just don't have a clue!! I can read Casey brilliantly and know when to get out of situations. I can't believe he accused Buddy of biting his dog!! I hope you see him again at some point and can put him straight, that guy needs to learn how to read his dog. I hope Buddys ok, give him some hugs from me.

Why is it that SO many people these days are just plain a$$holes??? Seriously? Is it like some kind of new competition I don't know about? Cause seriously.. in a day out of all the people I meet or come across, 90% are a$$holes!! I swear some people just aren't worth the air they breathe!!

YIkes! So should I not bring my puppy to the dog park? He is only 3 months onld so he's way to young to be nuetered and he's not trained to stay with me when there are lots of distractions around...I was planning on taking him to the park and keeping him on his leash of course, but now I'm a little worried since he's neither nuetered nor trained to ignore other dogs.

Aw good for you! Sometimes you have to file a report! Especially seeing as it sounds he was trying to make YOU look bad after all this!

Let us know what happens.

If your dog is not trained, no, you should not take him to the dog park, especially on a leash. Please do your research before embarking on such an adventure. A 3 month puppy is too young to be at the dog park anyways so you have plenty of time to work on training.

I am perfectly fine if people bring their un-neutered dogs to the dog park as long as they excel in obedience. However, this is not always the case, thus, others suffer.

And I'm sorry to the rest of you, I forgot to mention Buddy is okay.. he has an injured leg, but he's a trooper!

I am rethinking the idea of bringing Smokey to the dog park again after she was bitten last week in the park. As you stated, there are too many stupid owners and it is too dangerous if the owners won't take responsiblity for their own animals. Glad your dog wasn't injured.....

You know, Bob, our boys love it so much. I hate the idea that we may have to stop because of some of the irresponsible people out there. :( The way I see it now.. every irresponsible person I see I am going to report. That is the only way to beat them... one at a time.

If I had been there I would've bitten that jerk's head off.
I left out the convo hubby had with him.. it shall not be repeated on Chaz. But, yes, the man did receive an earful.

How awful!! I am the first to admit that my big guys are untrained for situations involving other animals, and they weren't well socialized as pups, although Kato kind of comes by that much naturally...That being said, I am also smart enough to know NOT to take them to a friggin' dog park, or beach, or petsmart, etc...I am so sorry that your babies were attacked, but glad your hubby set the @sshole straight...I'm afraid with my hubby it would have resulted in blows.:yikes:

Side note: I'm still learning the acronyms, so bear with me please. Is BSL breed specific labeling? Sorry, lots to absord when being relatively new to such a wealth of info.

It so sucks that responsible owners can't take their dogs to the park and feel that they'll be safe. The worst part is that no matter what happens, if a pit or pit mix is anywhere near a scuffle, ignorant people are far too willing to point the finger in their direction. Poor Buddy. With all of the BSL BS lately, owners with their well trained peaceful Pitty breeds have got to watch their backs. I'm with you BP...I'd adopt a no tolerance rule towards other owners at this point. People can't be allowed to let their dogs run a muck and try to pin it on others.....ESPECIALLY OUR BUDDY!!!!!:(

Edited note for TAC - BSL is Breed Specific Legislation :)

Those few irresponsible people are the reason that I won't take Madilyn to dog parks. It's difficult enough when your dog is only a bit over four pounds, but it's a thousand times scarier when some of these careless owners have dogs that weigh over 100 pounds.
I wish that the parks could be monitored by some sort of security, thus weeding out the bad dog owners with their poor dogs (who sadly, aren't at fault for their behavior)..

I personally wouldn't take any toy breed to a dog park. There are too many variable that are out of your control and can be potentially lethal for a small dog. Unless the park has a seperate area for small breeds, off leash parks are just too risky. You only have to spend a week in a busy Vet hospital to see what can and all to often does occur.

I was recently in a discussion on another forum (chihuahua specific), and we were discussing the very idea of a dog park specifically for small-tiny dogs (say under 25 pounds). Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I need to look into it in my area.
