I was recently thinking how I've never met a Japanese chin, yet I've met a stabyhound ....

Rare breeds I've met:
Stabyhound
Dogo argentino
Black Russian terrier
Xolo

Less rare but I think they're rare because I've only met one or two:
Greater Swiss mountain dog
Petit basset griffon vendeen
Irish water spaniel
Neo mastiff
Saluki
English shepherd
Sealyham terrier
Tibetan mastiff
Affenpinscher

I've never met a Japanese chin...not that they're common but seem like they'd be more common here as city dogs. I've also never met a briard...those are all I can think of.

I would say the rarest I probably have met was a Caucasian Ovcharka. I was NOT impressed. I hope she was just a poor example of the breed.

My problem is I don't know what counts as rare. I don't see a whole lot of variety around here, for most purebreds I've only ever seen a few of each besides your super duper commons ones. Before Working at the kennel I hadn't met TONS of breeds but I see them all the time here (shiba inus for example) so I guess they can't be as rare as I thought they were.

We have an Alaskan klee kai at work (who is one of my most favorite things in the world), I don't think many people have heard of them.

Stealing from your lists the only dogs I've met are PBGV, Tibetan Mastiff, and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (though I don't know if I consider that one rare).

Ohhhh I forgot I met one...it was a puppy. They had taken her to socialize at a very crowded farmer's market...the puppy seemed extremely friendly to me, even though she was only about 3 months and HUUUGGGEEE. I have no idea at what age they typically show some reserve with strangers, but it surprised me.

ETA I think rare really depends on area, too. I've only met one cur dog and one mountain fiest, but I don't think they're rare in the rest of the U.S. If you live in NYC, you see tons of basenjis and hardly any BCs...my guess is it's the opposite in more rural communities.

Oh, I met a Fila once, a puppy, at the MSPCA walk in Boston. I got a picture:

I met a cane corso at a rally-o competition and have met a french mastiff at work.

So far I have met everything on this list. :p

This one was big. But she was SUPER fearful. The owners seemed...kinda simple people. Not in a bad way or anything. But maybe they were out-dogged. The dog was not socialized early enough. The lady was wanting to work with her for conformation classes, but the dog wouldn't stack, then the dog dragged her out of the ring and was unable to be examined. I want to say the bitch snapped at her owner but I cannot remember. She used an oversized pet type choke collar on her. The lady told me that they were breeders and had several more at home. I internally cringed. They were very nice people, I am sure it was a very good dog at home, but they failed her on the socialization part.

Rarest are probably:

Welsh sheepdog (I'm pretty sure the only ones in the US all live around here. One of my trainers/friends has one and I've met about 6)
New Guinea Singing Dog (I've met two)

I have friends with some very uncommon breeds like Icelandic sheepdogs, Boerboel, and vallhunds. I've met most breeds that are AKC registrable just via dog shows and agility.

Mudi is maybe the rarest I've met. I think a lot of the rarity varies from area to area, as someone mentioned. We have quite a few GSMD around here, but there's a breeder in the northern part of the state. We owned a Bedlington, and he was one of maybe 3 I've met other than when we picked him up from the breeder, but I know they are more common other places.

Other less common ones I've met: Caucasian Ovcharka, Shiloh Shepherds, American Water Spaniels, Australian Terrier, Kuvasz, Koolies, Chinooks, Appenzellers, Icelandic sheepdogs, Glen of Imaal terrier, Croatian sheepdog.

I'm not sure what's common that I haven't met. I haven't met a lot of the mastiff breeds listed here. Probably some of the hounds that are reasonably common. Since a lot of my dogs are met through agility, those are probably the groups I don't see much variety of.

I guess it depends on what counts as rare. Most of these dogs were regulars at Calarts or coworker's dogs. I think students at my art school had a thing for getting rare breeds to be ~unique and hipster~. It was a super dog-friendly school, and it was great. ;_; I'm cursing that I didn't live in a dog-friendly apartment during my 4 years there.

Rare/uncommon breeds off the top of my head:

Neapolitan Mastiff (kinda creep me out)
Basenji
Cane Corso (a Calarts regular, every single day)
Finnish Spitz
Dogo Argentino
Catahoula Leopard Dog
Borzoi
Bedlington Terrier
Rhodesian Ridgeback (I met two!)
Korean Jindo (I met three and helped train one... a friend's dog who she was having trouble with)
Treeing Walker Coonhound

My mom really liked the Treeing Walker Coonhound. After we got home, she was like, "What's that cute dog called again? Tree.. some tree beagle..."

I can't think of common breeds I haven't met right now.

See, I've met at least a dozen ridgebacks and basenji (I consider them both one of the more common breeds here) and corsi seem to be a pretty popular mastiff, I've run into at least 5 in public and have known a few via the owners.

Bedlington is a good one! My ex's aunt had a pack of them but they're the only ones I've known...I'm surprised they aren't more common in sport circuits.

Stabyhund
Kooker-Ican'tevenbegintospelltherest- looks like a little spaniel
Bedlington
Fila
Long Haired Whippet :p
Silken Windhound
Borzoi
PVGV
Neo

I live in a town that's a weird combo of super rich people and hippies, so I see quite a few odd breeds combined with a ton of rescues.

Around here Shibas and Catahoulas are common as dirt. Mastiffs are pretty rare, I think I've only seen a handful. Sighthounds are unusual, except for off the track greys. Scents hounds are a dime a dozen. And the doodles. Do you want Labra, Golden, Aussie, or Border? I have a half dozen in daycare every day. And of course the pits.

Speaking of rich people and hippies, I forgot to mention I passed by a very well groomed Kerry Blue Terrier at Portland, OR last year! I immediately yelled "KERRY BLUE" and the owner was an old man who side-stared at me, so I didn't go up to him. :I

(the end of my story)

Well some less common breeds I've met:
Alaskan klee kai, the owner of my agility club breeds them so I've met a lot. And there are two that come into my work.
Japanese chin
English sheepdog
Basenji
Borzoi
Scottish terrier
Hunt terrier
Norfolk terrier

Common breeds that seem to be uncommon here:
Border collie, outside of agility I know zero. And there's only two that train at any of the agility clubs within an hour from me
Jack russell
Papillon

Catahoulas & Walker hounds are super common here. :)

Shiba Inu a long time ago. They aren't common here. I know they aren't rare, but they just aren't common here.

I don't know how common they are, but I did meet a Polish Tatra Sheepdog puppy years ago and I know they aren't common here. Super huge puppy!

And, I did meet a Giant Schnauzer once. Also not common here, his owner got him from Texas. He was super cool!

The dog daycare I worked at had a Dogue de Bordeaux (think Turner & Hooch dog) he was the best behaved dog there! And my favorite.

See, I keep remembering more breeds. I guess that's what happens when you've been "in dogs" one way or another for over 25 years. LOL

PON (Polish Lowland Sheep Dog)
Redbone Coonhound
Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Flatcoat Retriever
Airedale
Welsh Terrier
Norfolk Terrier

Everybody knows a Rough Collie, but, there really aren't that many out there in public anymore. I saw 4 in one day- the one I was dog sitting, 2 that belong to someone I know from Rally, and 1 in the park. There's also a vet in the general area who was in one of our early Rally classes with 2 of her Collies.

Really? I see rough collies on a regular basis. Not so much at dog events, just as pets. Smooth collies much more rarely.

I'd say the most rare dogs I've met are a Basenji, Bullmastiffs, and a Sloughi.

The Basenji I met at a Petsmart, the first and only I've seen in this area. The two Bullmastiffs are my sister's friend's dogs. The Sloughi I met when I was in Morocco visiting family, they had one at my distant cousin's farm.

Unfortunately I don't get to meet many rare dogs. There are far too many Cattle Dog mixes, Shepherd mixes, Lab mixes, Catahoula mixes, and Pittie mixes here lol.
