Going to Gettysburg like we do every summer and the only time I leave Jackson in the room is the one night we go to dinner at an indoor restaurant. He typically does fine, as far as I know, but I'm always super paranoid the whole dinner (2-3 hours). I'd love to be able to spy in on him, make sure he's not barking/scared/etc. Restaurant is in walking distance to hotel so I could easily get back.

Did not know if there was anything cheap-ish to buy that would do the trick where I could go onto my phone and watch him and set up a little webcam in the hotel room. I do usually bring my laptop, ipad and the hotel also has internet.

Call your phone on facetime/skype from the laptop, and then check periodically. I don't know how easy it would be to accidentally hang up (or drain battery), though, and then you couldn't remedy that, unless you teach Jackson how to answer phone calls.

A Drop Cam connected to hotel wifi would work. Free app on your phone, and you can check in from time to time. Drop Cams are inexpensive and amazing quality - I have one I use in our house to spy on the dogs.

Open laptop, turn on webcam? Lol that's what I've done when I've wanted to spy.
I don't know how I would connect it to my phone tho? lol I have a macbook. It has a camera for like facetime etc but I don't personally have a web cam and connect it to my phone, I guess I could buy one and then just leave it on lol.

LOL that would be hysterical to see him answering a call. Hmm I could do this i suppose and bring one of those little portable chargers with me for my phone at dinner so it doesn't die.

This looks perfect! $199 on amazon though, a little more than I wanted to spend. :(

It's what we did when our baby monitor broke, lol. But there HAS to be a free app for a mac built in camera to connect to your phone?

Can I just say that I nearly selected this as a "sporn post" that had gotten through the filters :rofl1:

I set up my laptop with Skype and call in from my phone. It's free and you can set it up to accept calls only from "friends" so it will pick up automatically, but random people can't call in.

All you need is a webcam on the computer, doesn't matter if it's fancy or anything. And you need a phone that can run the Skype app.

I didn't know this and it's a super useful bit of info! That's basically what we did with facetime, but had to manually answer our own call before leaving and try really hard not to accidentally turn it off.

I learned that trick when I wanted to set up a camera to spy on Watson and I didn't want to spend any money. So now he has a Skype account and only his friends can call in, which I think is just me and my mom. Super useful! Skype must have added this feature just for this reason - I can't think of any other reason you would want Skype to answer automatically.

Yah, sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant webcam and then just running Skype through laptop and phone.

Awesome! Thanks all for the tips! The Skype thing should work PERFECT. Tested it out, perfect. I guess the only thing I'm relying on then is the hotels wifi to work. Woohoo! Easy solution. Thanks guys. :)

I just want to say this thread is super awesome lol I always feel like I need to rush home and can't be gone long because IF Sawyer is crying I don't want the neighbors to have to listen to it. Now I can spy and can relax if I see that he's doing well. :D

I've used Presence. It's an app that you download to two apple products (they may have the app for other devices too, I don't know) and then you leave one device running (I leave my iPad and plug it in so it doesn't die) and then I can check in from my phone. I did this when I had a foster dog and her 4 week old puppies and I had to go to work. Then I used it on my own dogs but they were so boring and were always flat out asleep when I'd check in.

ETA: It also apparent,y has a motion sensor function you can set it to so it alerts you and turns on if it detects motion. I've never tried it, but they recommend it for home security using this function, which I thought was kind of neat.

The Skype thing has been working perfectly! So happy you gave me that tip. Every one is getting a kick out of me calling my dog and checking in on him though :rofl1: I'm glad I had it though because when I left for dinner yesterday evening, he was barking a bit when I walked away from the door but I gave it 5 mins and called and looked in and he was sleeping on the bed. Made me sooo much less nervous that he wasn't disturbing others or stressing.
