How "open" about your dog nerdiness are you?

I used to kind of hide it. I'd never really spoke about it beyond that I liked dogs and that I worked at a dog daycare. I didn't want people to think I was a crazy dog person .. but then time went on and I realized that life was too short and that I didn't care what other people thought. :p So I became more and more open about my nerdiness. I think my nerdiness really came into the open when I flew to Las Vegas to pick up a dog. :p A lot of real-life non-dog friends didn't really understand why I would go so far to get a dog, but when I talked to them about it, they seemed to get it. Now when I go out with my friends or stop by my sorority to visit, the FIRST thing 99% of people ask is 'how are Seamus and Paris?' :) I don't bore them with details, but it's cool to know that they care.

I only have one Facebook, and I'd say that 70% of my Facebook friends are real-life non-dog friends, so I try to make an effort to not flood my newsfeed with dog stuff constantly (my instagram, however, is almost exclusively dog-related. WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO TAKE PICTURES OF??). Having said that though, I do like reading about other people's interests and hobbies when they post about them on Facebook. :) And I do have non-dog interests too.

My life is pets. Everyone I know, knows I am a huge dog nerd.

I have less than 10 friends I didn't meet because of or through dogs/dog sports.

I am a manly dude who is into muscle cars, BBQ cooking, and other manly-type-stuff. I tell NOBODY about my sweet fluffy little fur-balls. It would kill my street cred. :yikes: I get lots of  just taking them for a walk.

Seriously, I do test the waters to see if someone I am talking to is a "dog person" or not before I volunteer anything. Even then, I do not push it. Better to save the details for people who share your enthusiasm.

The wife puts the pics on FB. :D

I'm 100% open.

95% of facebook is dog. Don't care.

If I go to the bar and meet people, I'm fine telling them that I own 3 dogs, compete and travel and have a car and house dedicated to the dogs. Most people think it's pretty neat, really. Not something they see everyday, good ice breaker to talk about dogs instead of myself. lol

Since I started working at a dog daycare, I am shocked at how many of my coworkers aren't dog nerds. Some also work at various shelters and rescues, and they still aren't dog nerds. They probably aren't nerdy about anything else either though.
This has always surprised me too! Most of the people I know are obviously dog lovers and enjoy dogs, but they still aren't like... 'into' them, if you know what I mean?

Also, my 'normal' friends (LOL)... like the ones I've been friends with since elem/middle and high school (there's only a handful left honestly), I would never tell them about being on forums online about dogs. They don't know that.

My family, I don't care so much about.

Sometimes I do try and hide my collar and dog gear obsession a little. I just don't want my family to know how much I've spent :p but they joke that every package that comes to the door is usually for Jackson :rofl1:

I'm open about it. A lot. I don't super nerd out about dogs to people who don't care, though.

Which is most of the people in my life.

I need dog friends. Local ones. Desperately.

It is well known that a huge part of my life revolves around dogs and all things related.

People close to me accept it... I try not to let it take over every interaction with my non- dog nerd friends and family, but they do get to hear about the dogs regularly.

I am incredibly nerdy. Dog nerdy, book nerdy, and movie/tv nerdy... I don't hide it. Luckily my friends are just as nerdy as I am.

I think everyone who knows me knows that I am an animal person. They understand it is a passion. And considering my facebook (and phone) are full of pictures of Abrams....yah. LOL All of my close friends either also love animals (just not as nerdily) or understand my nerdiness, so it's all good. And my parents are super accepting of my animals. They call them their grandanimals.

I'm open about it and besides all the people close to me are animal lovers too and usually interested in hearing about stuff I'm nerding over even if it isn't their thing. Feel lucky to have some awesome people around.

Work, I'm known as the dog nerd, but almost all of my co-workers own them. Probably only the one with three BC's and four cats is as much an animal nut as me though. We have fun trading goofy pet stories.

Also open about the other things I'm nerdy about like art, reading, firefly, etc.

People with two Facebooks amaze me.. I never understood it. Have one Facebook& I post about random people, things that catch my attention, crossfit if it is particularly worth mentioning and often my dog because she is fabulous and my world. People are free to unfollow me& even unfriend me and I would never be offended!

In my day-to-day life, I don't bring it up with random strangers on the street or people I pass in the hallway but a few people have seen photos of the red dog& ask questions about her. I am reserved so I would NEVER butt into a conversation to add my $0.02 but would give an honest opinion if asked. I think to most people I come across as a regular person who has a dog& to people who know me, I come across as a weirdo who spends way too much time& money on a dog who just keeps running away ;)

If people know me well enough, they certainly know I love dogs. I don't force anyone to talk dogs or bring it up a ton, I get all of my dog nerd talking out here and on FB. I don't try to hide it or anything. A lot of my friends will specifically ask me how Feist is, because they like hearing about her and they know she's an important part of my life. I don't have 2 FB, my FB was made to be in touch with dog people, soooo.

So.... IDK how to answer this. I don't push my love of dogs onto people, but I don't hide it either. If someone wants to talk dogs, I'll talk dogs. I will state my feelings on things but I won't push them.

I have some friends that used to watch Muffin for me a lot, because of him they started getting into dogs and decided to go the Milan way. I told them exactly how I felt about him and why but I don't ram my opinions down other people throats. So they still like Milan and Muffin doesn't go over their anymore. I'll mention my dogsports but they're not really interested as they're pretty much only pet people.

So pretty much... I don't hide who I am, but I'm not flamboyant about it either.

I try to keep in on the DL that I've been on dog forums for 10 years. And that I regularly meet up with people at dog parks that I met online...

Dogs don't usually come up in my day to day life except between family and colleagues.

However, things crossed a whole new line yesterday while hubby and I were on a dinner date with a couple. They were "interviewing" us to be a part of their weekly trivia and they asked what we could bring to the table. Ken told them dogs. We know a lot about dogs. Yeah...I didn't really want to be on the team anyway.

Generally our (OUR--I think my dog-hating-husband is turning into more of a dog freak than I am) dog nerdiness stays home, on facebook, forums or around family :p

Not really, but mostly because it's really not that fun to geek out about dogs with someone who ISN'T a fellow dog nerd, if that makes sense?

Conversations about dogs with friends are exhausting, particularly with dog lovers because they automatically assume that I want to hear about their friend's Doberman that's going to be bred and have a ton of puppies, etc. Nope nope nope. And every time Cesar Milan comes up, the most input I give is "lol that show is bullsh**" but other than that, I've already checked out of the conversation.

Even with friends/people who are genuinely interested in learning about dogs, it's hard because we don't really speak the same kind of language, in a sense. Which is probably how more experienced dog/breed/sports people feel when they're trying to explain things to me and have to dumb it down :p

Not that dog related things come up very frequently anyway. Like others, I do have outside interests and things I do for fun that take up just as much of my time and enthusiasm as dogs. Yeah, dogs are probably my Favorite Things Ever, but I'm happy talking about shoes and makeup and music and the next season of Game of Thrones, too LOL

To each their own. I have 2 FBs because one is dedicated to my business (which is dogs). So I am friends with people in my breed from all over the world who don't care about me personally but want to follow my dogs. Pretty easy to understand from my perspective :)
