Hi, folks!

I'm headed out of the country for a year, and my buddy is going to stay back with some kind friends.

I am incredibly fortunate, in that one of the people watching him throughout the duration of my absence, works at a doggy day care - where they make mass orders of food for their guests, ahead of time. We are considering doing a bulk order for 9-12mos, as I'll be in a country a bit difficult for the transferring of funds. This is likely my first option for affording this.

However, I'm wondering a couple of things -

Does anyone still buy Kirkland Dogfood, or dog food in bulk from Costco?

Happy, the dog, is on Sundancer from Solid Gold - but trying to buy nine mos. of that at a time might not be feasible. So, we are considering purchasing 9-12mos of Taste of the Wild ahead of time - Or perhaps another blend of food that is conscientious enough for the wellbeing of my dog, but doesn't break the bank. I'm thinking of price checking my local costco for dogfood, purchasing in bulk there may be an option as well.

Any other suggestions are welcome!
Thank you for reading-

Bulk ordering IS probably the cheapest option, BUT many kibbles are only good for a year after packaging, so you may run into issues with expiration dates if you order a full 12 months ahead of time. What about a gift card preloaded for your favorite dog food place?

Gift card might work after a bit :) 9mos was the block so that the food might not expire. I might just end up going into debt with my friends for a bit, but I'm trying to avoid that.

What about an automated delivery from somewhere like Chewy.com?
That's what I thought, too! I order my dog food (and now cat food) from Chewy, they're amazing. To order monthly, you select your food, then set up an automatic shipping date. They'll bill your card and ship the food at the same time every month.

I haven't done this because I can never figure out when I'll need the food, or if I'll have the monies for it...but it may be an option!

I would worry about buying 12 months of dog food all at once. If there is even a small puncture in the bags, you can get pantry pests in there... seed moths or weevils or cereal beetles. I agree with a gift card, or going into an independent or small chain and see if you can set up an account or something.

I was going to suggest an automatic delivery thing too - I think a variety of different dog websites offer that sort of service, it's probably the best way to go!

How big is the dog? I mean Buster would eat 40lbs in about 3 months, it wouldn't be that hard to keep 3-4 bags pest free, but keeping a pallet would be different.

The dog is staying in Portland? You could probably work something out with one of the independent shops (Try Hawthorne Pet Supply (anything you can dream of), or even the Urban Farm Store (TOTW/Diamond Naturals). You'd still need the money up front, but you might be able to have your people go and pick it up as needed.
