Best water toy?

We've just been using a generic tennis ball, but it is getting pretty gross.

What is the best retrieving water toy that you've found? Needs to be able to handle gross water (and sand), and we'd like to be able to throw it far (not Chuck-it far, but he has 50' of long line we'd like to max out). Bright color is a plus, so we can see it and won't loose track of it. Durability doesn't really matter, as long as it can handle being carried around in a mouth. This is a toy that will only come out at the beach for him to retrieve.

I was considering the version of the Wubba meant for water, but wasn't sure of its texture for cleanliness/durability?

We use regular wubbas and the chuck-it water toys. Bumpers are the best for P because there's a rope and he can tug with it, Georgie really likes the balls that have a gator or shark fin on them.

Are there any water-proof toys that squeak? I assume not, because then there would be a hole that would allow water in, but the perfect toy would be one that floats, squeaks, and is easy to clean. LOL

Abrams isn't a fan of frisbees. He much prefers toys with more substance, especially if they're roundish. He likes to tug, but I don't even know if he would tug when he's in his retrieving mode. He's all business and just brings it back, drops it at our feet, and waits for us to throw it again.

The regular wubbas float and don't become saturated with water?

I use regular wubbas for water. They float fine, though you have to periodically squeeze extra water out. But they are my favorite water toy.

I had the water Wubba at one time. Didgie shredded it pretty fast and I just didn't really like it.

Chuck it Ultra Ball for the win!

I had a bright orange, scented kong filled with foam, attached to a rope that was the best water toy for the life of my childhood dog and the first five years of my border collies. I think it was meant for training retrieves in hunting dogs.

It was this, I don't know if they still make them.

Sticks. For real... they're free, I don't care if they get ruined, I don't have to keep track of them or take them home, and if they get too gross I just go find a new one.

I did pack a stick from our backyard to take to the beach one day when I couldn't find his tennis ball. Our stick supply has run short, however, thanks to all of the burning we've been doing.

That kong toy looks awesome! I think they still make something similar. I'll have to look in to that. And the Chuck-it balls. And a Wubba. He'll just have a plethora of beach toys that we can swap out.

I also use a Kong squeaky ball on a rope (there's a theme with Payton...), and yeah, water gets inside it and it starts making really bizarre dead squeaking/gargling sounds until it drains and dries back out. The wubbas don't really get as water-logged IME. They make like a slightly damp squeaking sound if that makes sense... but still a pretty good sound.

I usually just use sticks. I like regular Wubbas too. On that thought, I need new Wubbas! Off to shop!

I use wubbas for dock diving because they squeak, and Patton can play tug with them. Usually they only last one session and I get a new one because they stop squeaking.

Jackson only retrieves the ChuckIt bumpers in water - he loves those things. He is uninterested in the Kong Wubbas and a few others I've tried for some reason.

I don't know if it is a valid concern, but I noticed that when Gusto fetched tennis balls and anything else that really forced his mouth open, he would act lie he was taking in more water. Since I am paranoid about water intoxication, I started only letting him fetch more narrow toys and sticks. He has a Chuck It ring he loves, and the Water Wubbas work because he carries them by the tails.

Maybe overly paranoid owner, but there you have it.

Retriever bumpers stay clean. Can always replace the cheap bit of rope if it gets too gross.

I like the round chuck-it water frisbees as well. Could always hose them off. We have both Kong and original water wubbas but those probably retain the most gross-ness. The dogs like them, though.

That is a very good point. Abrams has gotten a lot better, but still hasn't mastered the whole, "don't choke on water while swimming" thing yet. I think a toy where he can have his mouth mostly shut would really help.

I"m a big fan of the regular old bumpers for retriever training. Bright orange and with a rope so you can throw it further or tug with it. Though they aren't really made for tugging with a Shepherd. and they're cheap. I get mine from a farm all type store for about 5-8 bucks a piece (depending on size) and they last pretty much a whole season and I get new ones the next summer.

Agree with the chuck-it toys. Watson loves the bumper because it has a rope. Not that he actually retrieves it in water .... but it does float and stay clean and other dogs have enjoyed fetching it out of the water. Haha

Sometimes I'm tempted to throw my Chuck It into the water for fetching. Not a ball. Just the whole darn Chuck It. Lol easy for the dog to grab, won't retain any yuck!

We use both of those at home, as well as the Chuck It bumper, and two big ones I bought from Gun Dog Supply. But the Kyjen one is by far Caleb's favorite.


I have a small, canvas, cork filled bumper from Tractor Supply in the hiking back for when we go to the reservoir. They are cheap enough that I don't mind replacing them if the get lost.
