My friend is only practising travelling with Lotta. She is still quite young dog. Lotta has not been taken to many places yet. That's why she may possibly become little nervous but only a little. Lotta is not afraid of travelling.
If a dog gets that thirsty on a bus, its very anxious. I would work on reducing the fear/anxiety. That would go a long way. Its NOT normal for a dog to need a drink on a bus ride. Unless the bus ride is over a few hours long of course.
I travel to trials and what not and my dogs don't pant frantically for the most part (Quest will if she is in a crate, but she is learning to cope) so they can travel for a couple of hours no problem.
I suspect she gets thirsty after a bus ride due to anxiety associated to the travel.
Are you saying that nervousness would cause the thirst somehow? Are there also other reasons in addition to that the dog would become thirsty when one is travelling with him/her? So, the dog should not become so thirsty then.
My friend would still like to have ideas for this:
So, if Lotta gets very thirsty, how she would get used to be without drinking for a little longer? What can be done so that Lotta's throat will not become so dry? One cannot just ask the dog to drink something before they go.
We did tell you that: Although my friend asked first how to get/teach Lotta to drink from a bottle, you can give also other suggestions.
But my friend would like to get answers also to this:
So, is it possible to get a dog drink from that kind of bottle like in those pictures above? Lotta doesn't want to drink from it. It doesn't help if my friend pours water from it.
One of you suggested to teach Lotta to "eat"/drink something else than water first and my friend did concider it then. However, my friend thinks now that it would be better to use only water right from the beginning. She would like to know how to teach it so that Lotta would open her mouth by herself and would let my friend to pour water in it. So, the question is now: how to do it?
You can teach a dog to drink from a water bottle that you squeeze into their mouth but you can't teach them not to drip and dibble all over the place.
We have a dog at work who has to drink out of a crate water bottle like this:
so that might be another option, the dog just licks the tip.
My friend sometimes tried similar bottle but it was smaller. It was for rodents. Lotta didn't want to drink from it besides my friend is talking about how to get Lotta to drink from the kind of bottle we have linked in the first message.
