camping around Devil's Lake in central WI is nice, on the western side Perot State park north of La Crosse is good for hiking, camp, canoe, biking and north of there a ways is Interstate State Park right on the border of MN and WI on the St. Croix river that is pretty nice too.

All 3 look to be in the general vicinity of your trip thru WI

I don't know how far you plan to go in a day, but Put-In-Bay, on Lake Erie is nice. Cedar Point in Upper Sandusky, Oh, if you all are into Roller Coasters

That route takes you through Des Moines, IA. YOU NEED TO STOP IN DES MOINES AND EAT AT ZOMBIE BURGER.

First, I want to thank everyone that responded!!! We have a lot to think about in terms of where we will stop.

And L&C, I'll talk to him about taking an alternate through Ohio.

I think we're going to do something like this... where we try to get to yellowstone as fast as possible and than slowly drive back through Canada.

(Keeping in mind though, that we'll be playing a lot of this by ear and seeing how we feel... so this could change a lot too.)

We can drive through Kalamazoo going this way, but we'd have to either hit Zombie Burger OR drive farther north into MN... and I'm not sure everything on his "must see" list either. So we will see on that.

I am totally making him go to the reptile place as it's not even out of the way of our route really, and it's close to Mt. Rushmore... so depending on how crowded that is I may totally do the tourist thing and go see it!

And Eddie, I think we're going to save the PA stuff for when we do shorter vacations. It only takes us a few hours to drive to PA so that's a great thing for when we have a free weekend, which will be much easier to find again.

I'm just SO EXCITED about this trip... first our longest vacation was less than a week(and to go see my mom!:rofl1:)... we mostly only do 2-3 day things. And the second and most awesome thing.... I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT THE NORTHWEST!!! I've been Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, europe.... but NEVER northwest.... SOOOOOOOOOO excited!!!!

You'll be going right by me on your ohio portion.

Cedar point is right off your route. All kinds of water parks and neat places to stay a day. The islands are up there to. (Just noticed someone else mentioned it. It's in sandusky, upper sandusky is actually more towards middle of the state and in another county).

And the best thing ever is at our county fair in august. You can come for the combine derby. You'll never want to leave:lol-sign:

I love our zoo in cleveland to.

The combine derby is the Saturday. Seriously people think I'm nuts but I take the week off for it every year. And what's better than watching combines run into each other?

I know you don't know me from Adam, but my two cents worth... Your leg through Ontario, you're totally missing one of the best parts, Bruce Peninsula/Georgian Bay. Scoot down to Manitoulin Island, then across to Tobermory on the ferry. If you've got time, go see Flowerpot Island. If not the Bruce Trail runs along the Bay and there are a few access points where you can hike along and catch some really fantastic scenery. There's an awesome campground just off the highway that's nice and fairly inexpensive. Then cruise along the Bay and over to Barrie, across to Lake Ontario then up through Kingston.

So bad news bears on the combine derby(which I'm not sure what this says about me... But I TOTALLY wanted to see that!!!!). But it looks like it will be held on the day we have to be in the track at VT. The SO is a racecar driver, so this trip is planned between races. :( I'm so sad now.

MilliesMom: thank you for the tips. The reason I posted this thread is bc I know nothing about these places really. So I was hoping for some local perspective! I will DEF look into your suggestions if not do them!

We go camping up there every year in July, just love it there (we plan to retire there as well). In Aug we'll be camping somewhere between Peterborough and Belleville, another really nice area.

Btw, have you ever looked into doing some Geocaching? (http://www.geocaching.com/) Cool hobby while travelling.
