I think it has more to with a short hand rather then making the name longer.

We call pugs woos though, just my friends pugs, and they know when she says woos away to go to their kennel lol.

I guess "Dobie" is too cutesy for a lot of people, me included. You don't see people calling GSDs "Sheppies" or Malinois "Mallies" .... cutesy doesn't fit some breeds, IMO.

ETA: If we're adding 'ie' to make breed names easier to roll off the tongue, why aren't Chows called Chowies, Great Danes aren't called Danies, Pugs aren't called Puggies?

I don't know. As I said, it's a peeve of mine. ;)
I call Pugs "Puggies". :rofl1:

And I call Great Danes "Danes". Chows are already one syllable. I call GSD's "Shepherds". I'm just lazy, I suppose. :p

Oh, and at the clinic I used to work at, all Boxers were called "Noodles", thanks to an employee who had a Boxer whose pet name was "Noodle". And I think every single Boxer whom she squeeled, "Look, it's a NOODLE!!!!" to would wag its entire hind end and grin. LOL

The people I worked with who were into dobes often called them dobies and that is where I actually picked it up. I think its often an ie or er added as a nickname, which the point of them is usually to be cute. Berners, Daners, Dobies, Pitties, Wolfies....

Shelti.

That lack of an 'e' drives me a bit nuts.
I've always wondered about Sheltie. That's what I say since it seems like everyone else does, but it's interesting how the L and the T are switched. If 'Sheltie' was lengthened without the switch, they would be Sheltand Sheepdogs, instead of Shetland Sheepdogs.

Pibbles, just really annoys me, it just doesn't sound right. I'm fine with Pittie.

I've always wondered that too.Maybe because Shetlie, & Sheltand, just wouldn't sound right?

I also have difficulties on pronouncing Sheltand. :rofl1:
