Just FYI: The TV Guide listing for Westminster next week is below. Yet another slam against purebred dogs. If you want to write TV Guide to "educate" them, their email address is: [email protected]

“138th Westminster Dog Show
Let's go, mutts! This year, the animal kingdom's true underdogs get the chance to compete in the annual hoity-toity canine pageant for the first time. Unfortunately, mixed breeds are not eligible for Best in Show.â€

YES, thank you for posting this! I will cross post what I put on my personal Facebook.

To all my friends who own and love purebred dogs, I want to call something to your attention. TV Guide Magazine's description of Westminster Dog Show reads as follows:

“138th Westminster Dog Show
Let's go, mutts! This year, the animal kingdom's true underdogs get the chance to compete in the annual hoity-toity canine pageant for the first time. Unfortunately, mixed breeds are not eligible for Best in Show.â€

Please, PLEASE write to them if you find this offensive. Please explain that mixed breeds cannot win BIS not out of elitism but because they cannot be shown against a breed standard, but are welcome in performance events. Please explain that loving and valuing the unique traits of purebred dogs does NOT mean you do not love or appreciate mixed breeds. You all know that I own and COMPETE with both mixed and purebred dogs, and I value both deeply. I rarely make posts like this, but we MUST stand up for ourselves. I do not even DO conformation showing; it is not about that. It is about this idea of pitting mixes and purebreds against one another and suggesting that valuing the purebred dog is elitist, "hoity-toity," and somehow implies that we think less of mixed breeds.

They can be contacted at [email protected]. If you have a purebred dog that you love and value, and would like to have another, it is worth taking the time to write in. This attitude towards purebreds and the people who love them does not bode well for their future. We need to educate - and quickly.

Meh, I own pure breed and mutts and I am not going to let it bother me.

This is the problem with society today IMHO .... Someone is offended by something then he must be removed! This is why we have censorship :/, I say take it with a grain of salt

While I do currently own both purebreds and mutts, I may not be "offended" by it per se, but I do feel it's a major spread of misinformation. And perpetuates the often incorrect stigma that purebred owners and breeders "hate" mutts.

- Especially when it's very often the other way around.

Sent an email just for the heck of it. We'll see what happens.

It's not just a matter of an offensive opinion. It's a matter of large, influential groups (PETA, HSUS, etc) trying to squeeze the life out of breeders so that all that's left is spayed/neutered mixed breeds...and then after that, nothing.

This has nothing to do with an opinion. It is a movement. And if people don't speak out about it, it will happen.

Thank you. This is exactly is.

I own and COMPETE with both purebreds and mutts. I am not ok with this. It is spreading misinformation and deliberately creating a divide between dog owners.

This attitude is spreading and IMO it has the potential to threaten to future of purebred dogs.

Meh ... HSUS and PETA are a bunch of psychos and most people know that. Breeders will never be snuffed out

People generally know that PETA is full of nutters, but the vast majority of people IME still support the HSUS.

It is spreading misinformation and deliberately creating a divide between dog owners.
This is what it boils down to for me too.

Ime few people are really aware of exactly what PETA is up too. The vast majority of people don't know what a puppymill is, other then some buzz word, if The vast majority of people knew about PETA they wouldn't drag in so many donations. Then on top of that you have the hybrid vigour bs myth and the rescue people cramming breeders are evil propaganda and the vast majority believe that when you buy another dog dies.

This. Most people I know think PeTA is just a big group like a humane society who are trying to save animals. They have no idea that "animal rights" is not what they think it is. And I don't actually know anyone besides some people deeply invested in the dog world who know anything negative about H$U$.

Basically, what shadow said. I can so see PetA taking something like this and running- not good for any person who wishes to keep their dogs in the long run.

Meh. Do your research. PETA and HSUS have legislative influence. They have millions in funds to "persuade". Breeders are already being snuffed out by ridiculous laws that make it difficult for them to breed legally.

You'd be surprised what "most" people know about peta/hsus and legislation that affects breeders and pet owners alike.

This may not be a popular opinion, but this is not just a media issue, this is a dog show PR and education issue. A lot of people have purebred dogs (I easily see more purebreds than mixed out and about), I don't think the general public has a problem with purebred dogs.

However, it's not difficult for me to see how dog shows come off as elitist. Many people on here have grown up around dogs and are immersed in dog culture so they have a better understanding, but think about it from the point of view of someone who has never really been exposed to that sort of thing. The only time they see or hear anything about dog shows are the huge televised dog shows-it's not hard to see how someone would have trouble relating to that and therefore make assumptions. The media may not help, but I certainly don't think they are solely responsible.

This is one of the reasons I LOVE the IKC benched show in Chicago (coming up the 22nd and 23rd of this month I believe) and go support the hell out if it every year. It's an awesome way for the general public to see shows in action and have a better understanding as to what goes I to it. I'm "into" dogs and I have gained a whole new appreciation for confo attending this show. I really wish they would have those more frequently in more places.

Just my 2 cents.

I will definitely be there Saturday, but not sure about Sunday. It's awesome you guys get to compete there! The shopping is definitely fantastic-I've gotten my two favorite leashes there and it's the best place I've found to buy antlers.
