Here in Ottawa, schools pretty much NEVER close. The one exception in my lifetime that I know of was the ice storm of 1998. 1998. And that's because no one had power and they couldn't waste generators on schools. :rofl1: It can be -45 C here and schools remain open.

Busses get cancelled in inclement weather though, and that usually means those that do go to school get do do crafts and other fun stuff since the day is usually a write-off. I lived in walking distance of my elementary school, I loved going to school on snow days. :D
Within the last 2 years, schools have started closing here. But yah, (when I was a kid. Etc and so forth ;)) I never got time off school, save for the ice storm of '98. It was too cold out? We just didn't go outside for recess. Whimps nowadays.

In our defense, we very rarely close down for tropical storms and/or hurricanes.

We have hurricane days and hardly EVER use them, LOL.

I just had to laugh at this.

Since it's going to be so cold out, the schools are going to be closed tomorrow.

Us Floridians really are wimps:rofl1:
Lol omg :rofl1: Schools here are closed today but, it's -40 out. But they're open tomorrow and the high is -1 without wind chill factored in! :) Pretty sure they're only closed cuz it's hard to get buses started in this weather.

I'm super pumped for our 30 degree weather we have coming up. Gonna spend the whole weekend outside lol.

Its cold here but not too bad. In the teen right now with windchill a in the stifle digits. Weds the high should be around 42. I love hiking in the 40s. That's my favorite temperature. I hate the summer.

LOL That's okay, I'm the same way :rofl1: Right now our forecast for the week is

45/34 45/39 46/39 48/39 52/45
And I'm complaining nonstop about the cold. So much shame :p (ironically, I'm also complaining nonstop about the fact that we aren't getting any snow).

I know! It's suppose to get down to 19 tonight and not get above 38 tomorrow. I can't wait until it's summer so I can bitch about the heat. :p

Come to Germany, it's basically spring here. We have a high of 55 today and it's sunny. :rofl1: I'm starting to questions if its actually winter.

Of course, the high is 68 on Saturday. Our weather is bipolar.

They cancelled school today because the temps aren't supposed to get above 10. The thought students waiting at the bus stop in the dark in negative temperatures must have been enough to encourage officials to cancel.

Smart, since I had at least a few students yesterday come to school without jackets...

I can feel the cold and I haven't even gone outside yet. About to walk the dog right now and I'm dreading it. I have to go to work today too which is going to absolutely suck since we spend a good portion of our day outside walking dogs and I have minimal winter gear.

Truth, sadly. It's more "parents these days".
It's more than that.

Our students wear uniforms, and khaki shorts/pants and maroon knit polos are only so warm. Since all layers would have to go on top of the uniform in order to comply, you're talking many, many layers of clothes in order to get kids waiting in 18'degree temps (not including the wind chill factor) for the buses. Then once they get to,school, where do all those layers get stored? It's not like we have cubbies for the kids or anything. And that's figuring in that parents even have sufficient cold weather gear for children down here in good ol' southeast Louisiana.

But the other main factor is school pipes. We don't build our buildings to the specifications that I'm sure y'all do in terms of extreme cold temps. Especially considering our much older school buildings, pipes are in danger of bursting due to the extreme temp fluctuations. In fact, pipes busted at two of our elementary schools and the highschool. School was supposed to resume today, but was pushed back day. Parents grumbled, but they would've grumbled even more after having to figure out what to do with kids once buses were turned round and those in carpool were told to go home. At least parents had 36 hours warning instead of 5-10 minutes in regard to making accommodations for care for their kids.

As it is, we had all our pipes rewrapped last year, and here I sit in my house with the water shut off because a copper part of one pipe has a 2 inch crack in it and turned my backyard into an iceskating rink.

I spent my night breaking ice out of my horses water buckets and our trough.

Laugh, but there's no way for us to truly be prepared down here for such temps. Sunday it was 75 degrees. Monday it was 30 (the high).

Well North America can you sort your weather out please, because you're REALLY screwing ours up big time.

Weird and mild. MASSIVE storms. Tidal surges 4m above high tide mark, massive damage done to coasts around the country, including our local coast, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain and flooded rivers, 100mph winds....

Stop it!
