I had family staying with me this weekend, and my aunt was in the kitchen with me when I washed the dog bowls from their breakfast (after washing our human breakfast dishes). She was then in the kitchen with me when I washed the dog dishes after dinner, and said "Didn't those just get washed this morning?" Yes, they get washed after every meal. She thought that that was incredibly weird, even when the whole raw/canned thing was taken into consideration (which she also thinks is weird).

So, it got me thinking...how often do you wash your dog food dishes? How about water dishes? And I think it's worth mentioning what type of food you feed as well.

Food dishes get washed after every single meal, water dishes get rinsed out daily, and washed-washed probably 1-2 times a week. I feed a mixture of canned, raw, and dry food.

Lol you're supposed to wash those?

Rosey was fed kibble and her bowls got washed when they were nasty, usually after some kibble molded (she was a messy drinker)

ETA: that sounds bad. Her food didn't sit to get moldy, but within a few hours of it being soaked it would. Moldy is probably a bad word for it anyway.

Water bowl was rinsed with every change.

I am really bad about washing my dog bowls. I admit it. If I fed raw I'd be more inclined to wash frequently but I feed kibble.

Water bucket gets rinsed every other day when it gets refilled. Gets a good wash every week I guess. I admit the food bowls probably go several weeks. The raised feeder the bowls are in... a couple times a year. I need to wash more often. :(

I try to remember to have a big cleaning day once a week and throw the dog blankets into the wash and do their dishes, but it doesn't always get done (they get fed kibble). On the off chance I ever add wet food in their bowls I'll wash them afterwards or put aside to wash before next feeding.

Probably not as often as they should be. I usually wash them a few times a week though.

Two of my dogs eat raw, two of my dogs eat kibble. I don't really worry about bacteria. Nobody leaves a trace of anything behind. If they left residue or food I'd wash them more. I do rinse them after every meal though. Often with soap.

The water bowl gets rinsed after every refill and it gets washed once or twice a week.

Eh heh.... I feed raw and... um... yeah, not often. :lol-sign:  I just throw them in the dishwasher when there's room but I want to run it.

And to add...

The cat gets fed her dry food in one dish that never really gets "empty", and her wet food in a separate dish. The wet food dish gets cleaned after each meal (she leaves a lot of residue), but the dry food dish gets washed probably once a week.

I don't really wash the dog food bowls very often if I didn't feed wet food or anything like that. Usually whenever I remember. I do wash the water dishes when I refill them every day or two though.

I use them to fill up the dishwasher, too, aheh.

I would say on average 1x/week for food bowls. For water bowls, whenever I need to refill them I at least wipe them out with a paper towel or if I'm not in a hurry I wash them then. That might be every day when it's hot or a couple of times a week when it's not.

I wash both bowls once a week or so. I rinse both bowls every time I fill them. Finn doesn't leave anything behind so his food bowl stays tidy.

Pretty much never. But if they do, it's this situation.

They lick their own assholes. I'm really not that worried about them eating out of a dirty bowl. And with Bay in the house, they don't get too dirty.

Abrams' food dish gets washed...never. LOL I've had him for four months and it has yet to be washed.

Cynder's food dish, now that she eats moist food, gets washed once or twice a week. And by wash, I mean stuck under the faucet and scrubbed out. I may or may not use soap. She licks the bowl clean most of the time, so I don't have to worry to much about any residue, but there is some and it's gross, so I wash it.

The water dish gets similarly rinsed out/scrubbed when I deep clean the kitchen. So...maybe once every 3-4 weeks? (And yes, I hate cleaning the kitchen. :rofl1:) I do rinse it out when I refill, but I don't scrub.

Yeah... I don't wash Gwen's bowl. If she eats something wet, I do but she eats kibble... Every now and then I smush up peanut butter with her kibble and then I would wash the bowl.

Lately her and Bena haven't been eating out of bowls, since Bena gobbles food like a vacuum. I'm not buying a go-easy bowl for a foster dog

I don't wash/wash the dog bowls but I do rinse them well before each meal so there's no residue. They get a combination of canned/dry food.

Whenever they.... look slimy....

Which usually equates to, maybe every couple months.

I wash the water dish more often just because there's 4 animals drinking out of it and slobbering it up. But that still isn't done frequently.

Everyone is fed kibble. Doesn't make a difference to me though. I never washed with raw either.

And they never go in the dishwasher, I just squirt a little dish soap on a paper towel and wipe them.

The food bowls get washed whenever I clean ALL THE THINGS or they get gross. So...a couple times a year? I feed soaked kibble and occasional canned, but the dogs lick the bowl clean. Water bowls get rinsed thoroughly every few days, whenever the water starts looking too gross to just top off.

When I was dogsitting, the dishes all got washed after every meal unless there were leftovers (which got refrigerated and fed at the next meal). They were fed dry and canned mixed.

I am surprised at how seriously grossed out I am, I didn't think not washing bowls would bother me but... apparently it does, a lot. ALL food bowls get washed after every feeding (canned/kibble/raw, whatever it is). Water bowls get rinsed at every filling and probably washed every other day? I can't even leave dishes in the sink for more than a couple hours...

Then again, I vacuum every day so that might say something.
