Lymes Disease ring?

I just noticed this on Cricket





Does this look like possibly a ring from a tick bite/possible lymes?

Also how long should I wait to get her in to see a vet? Basically wondering how long until she would show up positive so I can get her treated if it is lymes? I'm being a really worried dog owner right now.

I don't know much about lyme and wasn't sure how long it takes to show up positive? Don't know that they would treat for lyme unless it did show up positive? I dunno.

Regardless I made an appointment for her this evening to get it checked out.

Vet time. Make sure, and don't wait until your dog is symptomatic. It needs to be treated if it is ringworm. My lyme bite was the size of a pie plate, clear in the center but bright red and dark purple with red lines running through it but I got bit apparently by Overloaded tick. I will never see them as anything but tiny injectors of disease. I have seen many photos of bites, and they all look a bit different. Some are mild red rings, and some are like mine. That doesnt' look quite right in the center but I sure wouldn't want to chance it.

IDK....could go either way IMO. Ring worm, or at least the ring worm I've witnessed in person, doesn't have the darker red around the outside and center...(like a bulls eye)..just one red ring and that's all.

I'd want to take her in as soon as you can. If you truly don't have the money, try some athlete's foot cream for a few days and see if there's improvement. (takes about a month to get rid of if it's ring worm!)

Also, if it IS ring worm it's pretty contagious....you can get it and so can the other dogs or cats! (you probably already know all this, but in case you don't and for other readers)

Wash all bedding, check everyone else, try to pin point where it might have come from otherwise you'll just keep getting new spots and passing it around!
(been there done that after a trip to arkansas and a stray infected kitty!)

Money is kind of tight since my car broke the other day and I possibly have to have the transmission rebuilt/replaced, but I have a plan with my vet where I pay a monthly amount and it covers a lot of basic stuff/vaccines, etc. More than likely I may have to pay for any medicines/treatments, but her exam wont cost a dime which will help a lot. Her appointment is at 7 tonight to get checked out.

Oh good.

IIRC, Phoebe was prescribed a 30 day supply of pills and I don't think they were all that expensive.

The kids were treated with antifungal (athletes foot cream) and I do believe they cost more to get over it than the dog, LOL

Weird, every case I've seen of ring worm has been like that. It's the rung in ringworm.

Dogs don't get the "bullseye" rash like people do with Lyme. It's very common for blackfly or other biting fly bites to look like that, though.

Also, ringworm is not generally (I would like to say never except that I never say never) red in dogs. In people it is typically red, but in dogs it is usually not discolored, but looks scaly. Also, ringworm will cause the hairs to fall out and there are clearly hairs growing from within that lesion.

I've seen it in others about 1/2 dozen times, and of course treated it here on Phoebe once and 2 of the kids (same episode) I've never seen it appear as a bulls eye, but more of a rose colored ring or oval on people and the case for Phoebe happened to be on her black nose, so ya, no rose ring just scaly gross swolen looking nose, LOL

Excellent to know lyme doesn't present as a bulls eye in dogs! I can go back to bed now 'cause I've learned something new......met my daily quota! hahaha

how does it present in dogs? I have read that only a small percentage of people actually get the bullseye rash. IF you don't, doesn't mean your free and clear. You just don't know until the symptoms roll in.

Fever, lethargy, anorexia, lameness. Often signs will wax and wane.

Lyme acts very different in dogs than it does in people. A very small minority of dogs (5% or less) who are exposed ever show symptoms, and of those something like 1% will have long term problems. Unlike people, where it's my understanding that most people get sick and long term problems are very common.

For reference, ringworm infection will glow under blacklight. Not the ring itself, but waste from the fungus sticks to hairs and that glows.

Not all of it. If it glows it's ringworm, but if it doesn't glow that doesn't mean it's not ringworm.


It looks like the little red itchy spots Logan gets just before/as he starts a skin infection, though this one looks bigger than what Logan's usually look like.

Is it on her belly? Has she been in long grass lately?

From personal experience with my own dogs, and work dogs... it's more likely a black fly bite.

Just looks like a bug bite to me. I would just wait it out unless she's bothering it or not acting herself.

The vet thinks it may be a spider bite actually, but he wants to run a lymes test in about a month to be sure. He said if we do the test now she would more than likely test negative. He wants me to keep an eye on it and bring her in if the mark doesn't seem to heal or if it looks worse.

He also checked her feet out because she is having allergy issues again and her feet are starting to look raw again. We ended up having to up her dose of meds. If that doesn't help on the allergy side of things then he wants to discuss a stronger type of medication.
