Pretty much the short form is with a Fila. With true ojeriza Do not expect to take your dog out in public or to visit family or friends. You pretty much have to change your life completely to own a Fila. Sociailizing this breed won't make it safe in public. They see every stranger as a threat. Even that child walking down the street minding its own buisness.

I would very much reconsider a Fila.

Wow just wow.

I am not Dogdragoness' biggest fan, I will admit that but geeze guys. Can we actually be constructive instead of jerks? How about the guest who is reading this thread and skips over it because of all the bull cr@p in it.

If she isnt suited for the breed because of anti social tendencies (or what ever) we are able to say it without being jerks.

Seriously cant we just grow up and have a mature conversation?

Don’t come back with the whole "she stared it" bull, you don’t have to stupe to their level (general she)

I don’t have anything to add to the actual conversation. They are a powerful breed and require a bold leader.

Heck I don't on vaycay because of the dogs I have lol.

I will admit to having some outlandish opinions in the off topic threads but when it comes to people asking advice about dogs or whatever I TRY to be civil the best way I know how.

What I said is incredibly civil for me, trust me. Sorry, I don't mince words. I'm not one to sugar coat things and never have been or will be. I work in a profession where if you're not blunt and to the point, nobody listens. I feel a Fila would be a bad decision for you. I stated why. Simple enough.

Uh ... No you insulted me & called me abusive to my animals, which is really saying something since you have never met me, nor my animals ... In fact it's almost laughable.

Yes I have looked into other guard breeds that included: the dogo, Rottweiler, Corso, & even the GSD & the dobie.

But the fila was the breed I couldn't really find information about day to day life with them, only historical stuff & personality/temperament rundowns.

I can't provide any information regarding Fila's because I've never owned one. But, based on the couple I've met, I would say they aren't the breed for most people, including yourself.

In your thread on another forum you mentioned Rottweilers. Again, not a breed for you. IMO, and knowing how you care for your pets (based on what you've posted) I don't think you need a breed of any type that has natural tendencies to be protective.

If you were insulted by my posts I'm sorry. You're not the only person I wonder about owning dogs on this forum, believe me.

That probably didn't help you feel less insulted... But I'm not here to please.

Where's Fran when we need her?! She's better at phrasing things like this than I am. -_-

Just because someone doesn't treat their dogs like they are made of glass doesn't mean they are a bad person.

My dogs come in at night or when I am not home to nice plush beds (or in buddy's case a crate) they get fed the best food I can afford & get RMB's twice a week. I make sure they are get all the mental & physically activity they need / want. They stay outside because they LIKE it out there.

I wonder what your requirements are for owning a dog :/

Well, since you asked...

I lived on a ranch growing up. So I know for a fact that its not the safest environment for a dog to be out all the time... There are coyotes, fox, hawks, cougars, rattle snakes, etc where I lived, and IME, a fence doesn't keep out anything that doesn't want to be kept out, it also doesn't necessairily keep things IN that don't want to be in. So to be outside on a ranch unsupervised for any amount of time IMO is a bad idea (Its not the best idea in the city either, where you have asshat neighbors like mine who threaten to shoot your dogs, thus, until we move, I go out with them EVERY TIME they go out). I get on my sister for this too. Its asking for something bad to happen. Dogs aren't the top of the food chain, at least not in Arizona.

You live in Texas. Its hot in Texas. Shade and water or not, its still not good for their system to be out in the heat all the time. Where we lived in Texas it got to be 115, and even in the shade at least 105. So its not a question of weather or not they "like" it. Its a question of safety. Not all dogs will drink when they need to and heatstroke is a factor. Some parts of Texas also get snow in the winter... So, now frostbite is a concern.

I can't even think of some of the other things you've said that have made me cringe before, but pertaining to this thread, THOSE are the problems I have. In SOME respects having dogs is like having kids... Just because THEY want / like something doesn't make it right, and its on you to make the right call. If your dogs are out in Texas summer heat, you're not taking proper care of your dogs. Its not all about food and blah blah blah, its about being smart and educated.

We have snake proof fencing, but even going out with them is not going to prevent all snake encounters. I'm all for an ounce of prevention, but i find your standards are a bit ridiculous. My crew has play pools that are emptied & refilled every other day & kept in the shade. The dogs seem them out when they are too hot. I also don't have any unwilling drinkers here so that is not a concern either.

I don't live in an extreme environment that has harsh winters or (what I would consider) harsh summers as for hawks I don't have any dogs small enough for a hawk to take, maybe if I lived where I had eagles I would worry about bear, but I don't. Plus Buddy is very bird intolerant ... He will chase off any bird that comes around from hawks to buzzards.

Most country dogs learn which snakes they should avoid ... quick, mine will play with the non venomous ones but leave the rattlers, copperheads & corals alone, I don't know how they know the difference but they do. But I have snake proof fencing on the bottom of my fence, so none of the bigger snakes can get through & the ones that do are shot.

I'm not trying to argue, but I don't think there is just one "best" cookie cutter way to care for dogs. Every area, living situation & climate is different. Here it's mild & they want to stay out, so I let them stay out. If they were uncomfortable they wouldn't want to stay out, they also have two huge porches to get under.

Saw thread title.

Saw poster.

Saw it was 3 pages.

Knew IMMEDIATELY what those 3 pages would consist of.

How about talking about filas instead so people can learn about them constructively....? Prediiiiiictable!

I don't think I read the right threads cos I've not seen any drama for ages. Was nice while it lasted!!!!

So wait. You have snake fencing so snakes can't get through. But your dogs play with the non-poisonous snakes. But they leave the poisonous ones alone. But you have snake proof fencing so snakes can't get in. But you shoot the snakes?

Large snakes--venomous and non-venomous--have a hard time getting through.

Smaller snakes--venomous and non-venomous--can get through. She kills them.

She has observed, maybe on hikes or in her yard with the smaller snakes that get through, that her dogs seem to stay away from the venomous ones.

Bizarre that people go out of their way to give her such a hard time about unrelated crap. Now apparently you can't leave a dog outside in a well-fenced yard unless your eyes are glued to it. Gone are the days of taking dogs to cabins in the wilderness and having dogs outside on farms.

My personal take on filas, based on only hanging out on this forum and others, is that they are a hassle and/or a liability. I'd stick to less intense guarding breeds. Dogs aren't really the best security system anyways, they can all be poisoned and they can all be shot. They are useful as deterrents, sentries and if push comes to shove they might bite someone for you. Might as well get something that does the above while being easy to live with and unlikely to attack the wrong person.

Filas aren't just "a dog," though. Do you remember what I said on the Corso thread about that breed being absolutely in-tune with their owner and any anxiety or tension or fear you have traveling right down the lead? That goes ten-fold for the Fila.

We also have livestock. But i would also absolutely consider a "shelter guard deluxe". I have two shelter dogs & if another rescue turns out to be right for us then that's awesome too :).

@Seven sins I was hoping you would reply, because that's what I was afraid of with the fila, so it turns out they aren't the right feed for me, but I still would like to know more about them because I respect them as well as the other guardians & mastiffs as a breed.

Yes I have country dogs, the yard is securely fenced, it keeps the large snakes out but snakes under a certain size can still get in, the ratio is prolly one or two baby rattlers for every ten snakes that might get in. But like I said my dogs are savvy, they know which ones to avoid, just like they know to leave skunks alone but will kill rabbits. My yard is almost two acres & I or someone walks the fence & the yard every morning (because most varmint & snake activity happens during the night) before the dogs are let out.

Ok guys it's been a while since I've had to step in with my mod hat on, but it's on now.

DG has a history of making poor decisions, posts, whatever. That's a well known fact at this point. Let's leave most of that out of this thread. We're talking about a breed that is wholly unsuited for 99% of the population, so those reasons alone should suffice for any "cons".

Filas are amazingly in tune with their people, almost to the point of telepathy. They have a twisted sense of humor and more brains than is good for the people around them. They also are not forgiving of handler error, nor do they forget wrongs done to them. They require a completely different handling, socialization, etc.

One does not simply walk into a room that contains a Fila. Seriously. THink about that for people over, for vet trips, etc. I've hung out for multiple days with Renee's Fila Kharma and thanks to Renee's amazing handling and raising of Kharma, plus the adamantium bond those two share and the trust Kharma has in Renee and her decision making, we didn't have an issue and were even able to go out in public without a bloodbath. This is a very unusual situation and not one that should be expected from any other Fila.

THe ojeriza is no joke. It takes a very steady, very confident owner to earn the trust of a Fila to the point that it will be content to just watch and not go on the offensive with each new person it encounters. THese dogs get upwards of MASSIVE. Males will be around 200lbs, females mildly smaller. Don't even pretend that you'll be able to hold one back or drag it away.

For "feeling secure" in a remote location, I would go more for something like a Rottie or even just a loud-mouthed black/tan "shelter guard deluxe". Less liabilty. Unless you're running cattle, drugs or are in constant fear for your life from stalker ex's or zombies, a Fila is not the best choice.

Yes, I see that now & I agree they the fila would not be a good choice for us, but instill would be interested in knowing more about them as well as the other guardian/mastiff breeds.

Yes I am also aware that others made a point to muck up this thread as payback. Um ... Ok whatever, they are just words on a screen but it doesn't help those who really want information on this breed ... Just saying.
