I have to ask... I have never had another breed with full prick ears. I was asked TWICE this weekend if papillon ears were cropped or if they were natural. That makes 6 or 7 times total I've been asked that.

Do other people with prick eared dogs get asked this too or is it just papillons? Is it because some are drop eared? I've found the amount of people asking quite bewildering actually.

Traveler got it when he was a puppy when people saw him with his down ears and then a little bit later with his up ears.

But, other than that no.

Get a PyrShep, crop her ears and then REALLY confuse people :rofl1:

Not us! But I think it's because German Shepherds are a pretty widely recognized breed, so most people know that their ears are naturally pricked.

I had wondered if it was the hair. I was thinking.... pyr sheps and briards are the only other breeds I know of with the uppy ears and lots of hair on the ears. They're both cropped. But paps are more common....

I actually am really starting to like the cropped look on rough faced sheps but if I ever get one, it'll stay natural.

Can you imagine if they WERE cropped what they'd look like NOT being cropped?? What, like twice as big? What a weird question.

It is weird! Especially since most of the times I've been asked that I've been at a dog event (like this weekend).

Not big enough ears:

Bailey was prick eared. Keeda and Muffin are both prick eared... But we've never been asked. It might have to do with not being able to see the ear leather? If you can see the ear leather it's easy to tell, if you can't.... Then you'd have to ask if you didn't know the breed enough.

A lot of people assume that bostons are cropped and docked and are surprised when I tell them no. Granted, show dogs might be cropped for a better shape. I've been asked a lot.

Then on the other hand you have the people who want to know why my danes' ears arent standing....they assume they are naturally prick eared.

No, I can't recall any one ever asking if Jack or Magpie's ears were cropped. Maybe because they're really well furred and just look natural? Not sure. Magpie's also just kind of Corgi-ish. I HAVE been asked if Sham's ears are cropped which is sort of confusing since he has teeny little flop ears. Twice neither party inquired about Elsa's ears, and they're basically the same as his.

I've had 5 PyrSheps and 4 out of them were cropped & docked.
PyrSheps should have natural semi-picked ears.
I like it,both way but prefer it,cropped cos it gves them,a more expressive head!.
What I,really, dont like is the undocked PyrShep as they have a rather wippy tail.
I wouldn't mind it,so much if it was thicker AKA comparable to the tail of the BC or an Aussie!.

I get it a lot. I either get asked of Finn is a border collie mix (lots of people asking of he's a corgi mix, hahaha) or more dog savvy people will ask if I've taped/moleskinned him.

I let his ears do as they wished, and they went full prick by four months. :rofl1: Got his grandma Holly's gene.

YES, people did keep asking me if Onyx's ears were cropped! I think in her case it's because they are really puppy-big and they weren't standing QUITE right for a while...so they looked a bit funny. I haven't got it recently.

I think I was asked once about cropped ears on Jackson. He's got pretty big ears. :rofl1:

But, no, I think most people know most little terriers tend to have pricked ears, so I guess it's common.

I remember I was shocked once to find out one breed was cropped though, now of course I can't remember which breed it was, but I had thought they naturally like that and then found out they weren't.

No actually, I don't recall anyone ever asking if Jinjo's ears were cropped? Enda, is an oddity, I get all sorts of questions, but mostly the assumption that she's part or mostly Doberman, or that she's a Lab (because she usually has her ears pressed to her head when greeting people, she's a submissive suck-up attention beggar). On the other hand, at our show handling classes once I got into an argument with a few of the others that the Beauceron is almost the same dog as the Briard, but they refused to believe me when I told them that Briards ears are cropped, I ended the conversation by telling them to Google it.

No - but Zora doesn't have prick ears. ;)
I was on the other hand asked today, why her ears are so huge, and if I was going to get that fixed. :yikes:
No. I like her goofy ears. And cropping is illegal. -.-

I do like the look of RF cropped dogs a lot. But Savvy's ears and tail are so expressive!

He likes to listen by holding this ear up:

manly!

As for the cropped questions, occasionally I have gotten that. When I had Roo's ears taped I got it all the time. In an "OMG DID YOU HAVE HIS EARS CUT! THAT'S SO MEAN!!!" way.

I lived in Fr when I had PyrSheps so was never asked about cropping or docking.
Docking is still allowed,in Fr but not cropping so now, judges take into account the natural placement of ears.
Breeders are also much more aware of the correct ear & tail, natural carriage.
Aleron:Love yr boy who has natured pricked ears but most dont which is a pity as the ear is often too heavy but that's changing.
