So, I've come to the conclusion that I won't be able to swing a DSLR for a while... so I want to find a point and shoot that takes decent quality pictures.

We have one of these: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Pr...meras/26402/COOLPIX-L820.html#ComfortLongZoom at work, and I love it.

Any thoughts? I thought it took decent quality pictures and it was super light and easy to carry around. Or, other suggestions for a higher quality p/s? Thanks!

ETA: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wc...campaign=B_Search_Brand_Powershot Cameras_BMM is the one we have at work. Whoops!

Hmm you could easily get a decent used DSLR for that price. I got my Canon Rebel XT body and kit lens for $250 via Adorama and KEH. ;) It's a great starter DSLR!

I have a Nikon d40 I'll be selling as soon as I find an upgrade. If the one I offered to pick up tomorrow is still available it'll be then. It'll just be the body though.

If you decide not to take the above suggestions (which I also second!) I would go Canon PowerShot over Nikon Coolpix any day. I LOVED my Canon before I got my DSLR. The zoom is fantastic, and learning how to play around with the manual settings was easy, too.

For a P&S, I'm pro Canon all the way. :)

If I could find a nice used DSLR, I would so go with that. However, nobody seems to have anything decent used around here that is actually reasonably priced. :( Maybe Chaz will find me a good hookup.

Hmm... We may have to talk about that. I will shoot you a PM.

I will also second staying away from the nikon coolpix, i havent found one yet that I like.

My favourite point and shoot is my Pentax WG-2 http://www.pentaximaging.com/digital-camera/Optio_WG-2_Vermillion_Red its water proof, dirt proof, cold proof, and well Tina proof, I LOVE this thing! I have taken it and jumped into the Caribbean, went floating down a river in Jamaica, put it in the ocean in Cabo, and taken pictures inside my fish tank LOL.

Yea, for used gear I go with online stores with good reputations and warranties, like Adorama, B&H, and KEH. Craigslist is too much of a crap shoot for me and our local camera stores don't do used to speak of. All of my initial gear was in the "physically ok, visually a bit worn" category, but I've yet to have any issues with them. :)

I got mine off the photography on the net (all canon) site. I look there all the time for things I can't have :) but I regularly see older X... series rebels and a lot of 20,30, and 40D bodies for 2-400 dollars. Kit lenses will often go for under 100 and you can upgrade later as your budget allows.

I bought my body and first lens from there, and would do it again. I saved about 500 bucks over buying new and my body only had 2,000 actuations on the shutter, so practically new.

i won't be much help in the point and shoot category, ours is about 10 years old :)
