I think I posted here about Cricket's tail a couple weeks ago...came home and it had a pretty serious bend in it (still don't know how she did it). We tried splinting it as per the vet's instruction, but it's been about two weeks since the splint has been off and it's obviously still hurting her. We went back to the vet this morning and got the news that the last third of it is dead. :( She's going in for her spay next week so they're going to amputate that part at the same time. Surgery is in ten days, hopefully it will heal without any issues so she can get back to being herself.

I know that this is what needs to be done and that it shouldn't impair her in the slightest, but I'm so upset. I'm going to miss her long beautiful plumy tail.

Aww poor Cricket. At least she will be pain free once it is amputated.

And poor you. I am probably way more in love with Wassim's tail than he is and I'd be so upset if it had to come off.
I feel your pain.

I can imagine how you feel :( boo, poor tail.

You could glue a flag on the end or something though... The possibilities are endless!

Thanks all. Some good news - we got the surgery bumped up until this Thursday, since her tail is not looking so good and she's definitely in pain. The longer we wait the more they will have to take off, so I'm glad we could schedule it sooner. She is on pain meds now and seems to be resting more comfortably, and is on very restricted exercise for the next few days.

There's a longhaired whippet specialty this weekend that she'll be missing, which is a bummer, because she always had a blast. No more conformation shows for her after this, but we should still be able to play everything else just fine.

Stumpy tails are the best. It keeps them from knocking things off...things....
Her and Hudson will be weird-tailed twins!

Poor baby. :(

I have another friend who just had to take her dog in to be docked. He has had "Happy Tail" for 6 months and she just has had it with the blood.

Oh my gosh no :(! Whatever she did, she did a real doozy. I'm sure she'll still enjoy all the fun sports again, conformation is just one little thing, as long as she feels better after it'll all work out.

Surgery went smoothly (both the spay and the tail amputation), we picked her up about an hour ago and she is home now and resting. A little woozy but otherwise fine. The vet removed about five inches of it, so it will look a little funny but is still plenty long enough to be functional. Now it's just a matter of her keeping it still enough to let it heal.

I took a quick cell phone picture to show you the length - provided she doesn't bash it around too much the bandage should be able to come off this weekend.

Just happy to have my pup home and on the mend.

After a few days of being a Very Sad Cricket, she seems to be feeling much better - not 100% still but is getting some of her pep back. She jumped up on my bed today before I could catch her (oops) and has been thwacking her tail on things when she wags. My room resembles a padded cell right now, because I've put blankets over most of the hard furniture. She hasn't bothered with either of her incisions yet though, hoping it stays that way.

I'm supposed to remove the bandage tomorrow, if she'll let me - I'll update with pictures if that's successful.
