How does your garden grow?

Who has plans for a garden this year? Doesn't have to be a full blown veggie garden, it can be flowers, some pots on the patio, herbs on the kitchen counter, etc.

What are you growing? What do you want to grow?

This year I'm obsessed with corn. Have a few varieties I want to test, but only room to plant and save seed from one, so going with Hernandez Multicolor.



And just ordered 1/4 lb. of oaxacan green. Oh. My. Gosh. It's so beautiful. Somebody on a homestead forum who lives in Forks was raving about how well it produces in the NW. She said they tested many many varieties, and this one produces enough dent corn to keep her family in tortillas and feed all their poultry for the year. Not going to have room for it this year but want to make sure to have some later. So shiny.


Other than that, have some Russian long keeping tomatoes started and Cherokee purples for summer eating.

Got my hands on Makah Ozette fingerling potatoes finally. Going to try growing them in cages too.

We have no garden as such.... Hard to describe my partners mother has a plot on the hill we share, and she has put up a poly tunnel, potting shed and patches to plant potatoes, courgettes etc

We have a courtyard, so id like to put some pots out there, and I like the idea of planting herbs in them. We also have a couple of chilli plants we keep in the conservatory. We got enough chillis last year to freeze for us to use all year (and beyond). They took a bit of a battering over the winter as we moved them inside and Fred chewed them... I've clipped them back in the hope of reviving them.

Problem is here that the weather is so variable, we can have glorious sun, followed by snow, then rain, then a heat wave and back to snow... All in one week.

I have a pile of rocks, a pile of compost, and a pile of seeds. We'll see if I can get them together at some point here...

I need to start my indoor seed but it'll be a couple weeks yet before I can really plant anything outside.

I have some tomatoes, peppers, cukes, peas and luffas started. I want to direct sow the lettuce, radishes and corn. Since this is our first spring in the house I am littering a bunch of stuff grow would to see what it looks like. We have a bunch of different things coming up.

I don't think my dad has started planting yet, but he typically raises corn, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, green beans, peppers, lettuce, broccoli, beets, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, maybe some snow peas and cherry tomatoes and whatever herbs/spices he feels like. He's done onions in the past, too, and potatoes or sweat potatoes.

Everything that can be frozen or canned gets frozen or canned, and that feeds us for a good long time. Nom nom nom.

Usually just have flowers in the gardens (for hummers and butterflies and seed/berries in the fall for the birds) but this year we're thinking of mixing in some veggies. Local paper did an article, with a chart, on what veggies complement what flowers, so we thought we'd try that.

Probably won't do much planting yet - forecast for next weekend is temps back down around freezing (up in the high 70s today - stupid weather...)

Our garden is already planted and flourishing. The sweet peas haven't started to flower yet, which is worrying, but the kale, and lettuce and onions are going like mad. I made a shake with the kale and some sort of lettuce that I don't know.

Thus far we just have fruit trees and flowers planted.

I have a Fuji apple, a Stella cherry, and a Japanese beauty plum in the back. In the front I have an ultra dwarf snow queen nectarine.

I want two ten foot planter boxes between each tree in the back but that will come after interior revamps.

We're moving this summer so we'll be digging 20 years worth of garden instead of putting more in

I'll still do veggies in pots... last year I did and some squirrel or rat or something came and ate all of my produce just as it was ripening

I also have a grape vine I dug up from next door this past autumn that may yet be alive. It have no leaves yet, but it does have little buds. Hard to tell if it's alive or just slowly dying though :lol-sign: I had another vine that I cut off vs digging up and even it had a couple shoots when I chucked it. So fingers crossed.

And I have an artichoke from last year that's coming back up. I have some artichoke seeds I should've started in Feb., I think I'll save them another year and just buy started artichokes if I see them. They're a great bargain, because they should yield quite a few buds when mature, and artichokes are like $2 a piece!!

I also have some Eucalyptus, Magnolia, Baobab, Touch-Plant, passion vine, morning glory and saffron seeds, and tree-fern spores, (and I'm sure some I'm forgetting) that I could start.

I love growing from seed, it's so much fun. I have almost no interest in the plants we buy from the garden centers, but I love the stuff I started from seed.

But we have limited room inside for flourescents and a pretty small veggie garden, so I plant a bunch of seeds, but not a ton of each, and see what's viable when it's planting time. I've started cucumbers, zucchini, summer and winter squash, broccoli, bell pepper, cabbage, eggplant, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, some tomatoes that came from italy (and we harvested seeds from. I don't know what they are but my dad is super excited about them), and we have green bean seeds that'll go straight into the ground. Then I have some herbs...Basil, parsley, and rosemary. Then flowers. I don't remeber all of them, just planted what I had, chinese lanterns, gaillardia, nasturtium, zinnia, gazania, marigolds, sweet pea, morning glory, flowering cabbage, not sure what else.

I'm excited to see what we'll get. After I planted the seeds I had to go back to college, so I just have to cross my fingers and hope my parents keep them alive until I come home in May!

The garden this year is going to contain, tomatoes, peppers (both hot and sweet), onions/shallots,carrots, and beans are all going in. Cucumbers are going in the pots, dill, rosemary, basil and cilantro will all also be added somethere. I also have a variety of flowers that will be planted around and in things.

Was planning on getting some of the cool weather stuff in the ground this weekend but then I got sick:/

I have a lot of separating to do still in my seed trays and I was hoping to get the tomatoes into bigger pots for at least a couple weeks before we put them out for good.

I have a ton of flowers with no real plan on where to put them yet so that will be fun Also will be direct sowing many veggies and flowers in the upcoming weeks.

Right now, the tulips are hitting their stride as the daffs are starting to fade. Trees and bushes are all starting to bud out, grass is green....spring is here!

We planted squash, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, hot peppers, okra, corn, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, beans & maybe peas. I could be forgetting things, also. I have herbs to put in pots inside but I keep forgetting.

Last year was our first attempt at gardening, and we did well for the most part. We lost our squash & zucchini to vine borers, but otherwise I was happy.

We have a huge garden at the farm. We dont every buy potatoes we grow enough to last 4 people for the entire year. SOMETIMES they dont last, but we usually do 400 ish hills of potatoes. Carrots, Peas, Beans, ect...

At the rate this weather is going, it feels like we won't have a garden this year lol.

Generally we plant tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. We try strawberries every single year... and every single year is a bust. Usually we'll get a couple that we're able to eat and they taste AMAZING, but for the most part we either get a bug problem with them or they just don't grow well!

Yeah it's hailing again here. My poor onions, started a couple hundred red globe and yellow globes, and between getting hailed on and eaten by a slug I only have 5 survivors. May break down and get some starts from the feed store, but was hoping for better results from seed this year. They're one type of seed that doesn't stay viable year after year, so I wanted to get some established and figure out how to start them reliably.

My dad had that problem with his veggies in pots, so he put the pots on casters and kept wheeling them around the house (front, back, side yard). Squirrels still got a couple but didn't clean him out like they had been doing.

We don't have a yard so we do potters. We have Thai Basil, Oregano, Tam Jalapeno's, Yellow Squash, Tomatillo's, 3 lemon tree's, lime, green olive tree (forgot what variety), pineapple bromeliad, and pink blueberry. We have various other non-fruit/vegetable plants as well.

The pink blueberry and yellow squash we've never grown before, so should be interesting. The Pineapple bromeliad has to be the coolest one we have! It has one pineapple growing at the top of it's stalk, it's very neat, I can't wait until it's fully ripe! ^_^

Put in two new beds, I will probably kick myself for one of them come watering time, hope to find a good deal (trade) on mulch now that I can bring it home in my own truck. So one was another bed that is shaded from the afternoon sun by the privacy fence. I plan on moving the hosta that was to the side and got too much sun after losing a limb. I split up the iris and put half of each batch over there as well. Seeded with some phlox, and put ornamental grass in two places at the front. Add some coleus when it's time and it should compliment my other shade garden. Planted the sunflowers, and they are now putting up their true leaves. Took about 3 lbs of seed from the oil seeds from the birds and lined the vacant field edge with them,. they are not up yet, and they ought to be, so may have to do it again.

Let Hyia and her brother have a small squirt garden with sugar peas and lettuce. Going to put tomatoes where my four oclocks were. It is really too hot for them there, and that should please the tomatoes to no end.

THe last will be a tub of morning glories to make a living curtain in front of Hyia's bedroom window. THey are sprouting now.

Also have some rosemary, and some columbine sprouting.

THe oregano from the neighbor's ignored garden bed has spread into mine, which is fine with me.

Weirdly enough for our more than cold long winter, the bach buttons never stopped growing, and the snap dragons remained as well. Going to be a lot of bach buttons which is fine too. Blue is suppose to be a butterfly's favorite color and I do love butterflies with my whole heart.

Hyia has requested a rose bush of her own, so we will be picking one out next check. I also snagged a very over watered azalea in the bargain basket at the grocery store. IT lost 95 percent of it's leaves, but new ones are sprouting out, so I was able to get it dried out just in time. I have it in a pot for now.

It's looking like it's going to be a great growing year here. We will have: garlic, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, basil, peppers, beans, peas, carrots, parsnips, broccoli, squash (summer and winter), chard, kale, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, raspberries...and then various herbs and flowers. Probably forgetting some things, too!

I love being able to eat out of the garden! Nothing quite like it.
