Police / army dogs (of any discipline) are they safe?

I know someone who is from Germany and I assure you, the majority of k9s there do bite, they do not just do hold and barks. The Czech still has working border patrol dogs and they also bite first.

That articles rendition of the differences in training are lacking to say the least. You can easily tell they lack hands on knowledge and experience.
Of course they do, it's a reporter, not a dog trainer that wrote the article. Thing is, they do introduce the different concepts, and the explanation of why US dogs bite first is perfectly understandable and logical, whatever European dogs do isn't really relevant.

My interpretation, from reading the article, is that the dogs being used on these police forces aren't being managed and trained well by their handlers, and that the police departments are choosing to just pay up rather than look into improving the training and handling of the dogs. Unfortunate.

Because the stereotype is exhausted and the effort of the story is to further prove, in conjunction with pops inflammatory photos, that cops are commonly inept due to their weight.
Was the story about them trying to chase down a bank robber and failing because they were too winded and couldn't climb over fences and walls to follow him? No?

It was an attempt at sharing a humorous true story. You said you'd never seen an overweight officer. I shared a different experience, which is that some of the officers on that force were (a few still are) overweight. Just because you haven't had that experience doesn't make it untrue, same as it doesn't make pops' photos fake.

I have no idea if the officers at the donut shop during the robbery were among the overweight ones. The main point is that there aren't any absolutes as far as "all cops are built like The Terminator and could never possibly have a BMI over 23" vs. "they all move like slugs because the only exercise they do is lifting pastries". Each force has slightly different standards and apparently different standards for enforcing them.

For what it's worth, the cops on that force refer to my brother's as "The Nerd Force" because most of them wear thick glasses. :rofl1: The jabs goes back and forth but they're all a close knit friendly bunch.

ETA: and weight is kind of relative as far as fitness goes. I know some pretty big guys that can move, and you wouldn't know it by looking at them. So it's entirely possible that these guys are passing their tests just fine.

Weird, I don't remember saying that. I remember agreeing that I do not know any officers who're so overweight they could not possibly pass the physicals which are required by every police force that I know of. I'm sure some exist, I'm also sure that some cops wear thongs under their uniforms to feel pretty but I wouldn't assign that label for the lot of them.

I don't know any police officers that look like that. Most departments have fitness standards that they need to pass.

FWIW the first photo looks to be security, not a cop.

I am first and foremost referencing the lights on the vehicle.

Amber or Yellow lights are often used by utility vehicles such as construction vehicles, tow trucks, snow plows, funeral escorts and hearses, security patrol vehicles or other vehicles which may be stopped or moving slower than the flow of traffic. Amber is usually the most permissively regulated color.

Police agencies may use red, blue, or both, depending on the state, along with white and amber as optional colors; although amber is usually restricted to face behind the vehicle.

I also am in the group Of "I see more overweight cops" because 4 out of 5 cops I see are far too overweight to catch me if I wanted to run ... Even though I am a smoker but I run half a mile very day & even though I smoke ... I could still outrun an overweight cop.

Oh? Have you done it? For every single overweight cop?

Even if that's your experience, it doesn't generalize to cops as a whole. I don't think I've ever seen a seriously overweight police officer, and up here people are not afraid to eat a little bit of cheese and hotdish, if you catch my meaning.

My dad's company does fundraising for police/fire departments through out the state and I'm hard pressed to recall meeting many fat cops. Certainly there were some, but none that spring to my memory (not that I keep a database of fat people in different professions I've seen in my mind.) Mostly sexy cops. We have an odd distribution of hot cops here.

Overweight does not equal unfit. Thin/muscular does not equal fit or able to run.

Officers approaching 'obese' or to the point where their weight would start to become a problem are notified. A family member was asked to lose a percentage of her weight to remain on the police force.

Well, and chasing people on foot is NOT the number one thing police officers do. If a officer is stable, level headed, and otherwise great at his/her job, yeah, work on the weight but I would rather that then hot headed fit officers anyday.

I dont know that I have ever seen an obese officer myself...

Well put, there are worse things than a few extra pounds.

There are, and as long as they're able to do their jobs it's not an issue. However, if a pro basketball player is injured or otherwise lets themselves go physically to where they are unable to perform, they change career tracks. They don't continue to work at a level where they're under performing.

It's even more critical for a law enforcement officer to maintain their fitness levels, because unlike pro athletes, people's lives depend on their ability to do their jobs well. And I'm not talking about the general public here. More like their partner's lives, and other officer's they serve with in intense situations.

Agreed about mental fitness being paramount, but if they're already officers then they've already had a serious amount of psych testing and evaluations done. Someone's mental fitness doesn't necessarily suffer the same sort of rapid deterioration their bodies do if they are neglected for a while.

FWIW when I worked for an oil company in VA the DOT enforcement officers' cars only had yellow lights on top. The blue lights were next to the headlights. They also wore uniforms, a gun & a badge because they were LEOs. I can't say for sure because I can't enlarge the pic & still read the shoulder patch. But I did find a couple more pics where you can clearly see the evidence of affiliation.

Also for people whining about getting involved please reread post #42
WITHIN THE LIMITS OF YOUR SKILLS & ABILITIES.
For the VAST majority of people that means remembering & reporting to help catch after the fact (but some of us have more skills & abilities).

Lots of people are contending there are no fat cops because their local PD is strict about weight standards. Just wanted to show not every department is.
The reason I originally chose fat cop pics is because a pic won't tell you which cop can't shoot to save his life or can't effectively apply prisoner control techniques or can't make a decision under stress or any other number of shortcomings that make you more capable than them. Now most cops are capable & fit even if they're poor shots, but SOMETIMES you are more capable than the cop on the scene.

Except I see one that is obviously photoshopped, one taking at a weird angle with a bad lens effect so you really can't tell anything, and one possibly photoshopped cop.

Even so, those are multiple pictures of 3 cops. Three, in a world of how many cops?

Good job?

:rofl1::rofl1:

EDIT: Again, weight does not equal abilities/show capabilities. So really, you could show 15676451 pictures of "fat cops" and it proves... nothing.

The chances of someone that size running down a crook is slim. I've seen Polynesian kids big as a house with explosive speed for the first 20-30 yards, its impressive but its not the same as trying to catch a skinny little dope dealer with a 50 yd head start. however I have yet to see one guy with a big belly like that that can run me down & I'm over 40, broken both ankles and have degeneration of the soft tissue in both as well as the damage to my back and knees. Go sell that bull somewhere else.
ETA
Google images brought up a lot more than 3 guys.

Dude, fat and obese or fat and without the ability to preform their job are both very different.

I'm not trying to be a dick but...

I don't believe the majority of cops are impaired by their weight and I don't believe the majority of working dogs are innately unsafe. We may never agree and no number or hate driven tumblr accounts will sway me, I've been in pit bulls too long to believe every inflammatory photo thread created by a hateful person with paranoia.

It should also be noted you do know that most internet reviews are complaint based, right? Be it about cops or dishwashers. Rarely do people take time to sit down and write a review or post a photo of something expected to be the norm. You're bound to find the exceptions outweighing the good when looking for reviews unless you look for nerd sites per topic, for example using imdb as opposed to fandango when reviewing movies with any substance.

Me, either. Of course there are some cops too fat to do their jobs properly and some unsafe working dogs out there. There have also been dentists out there who molest patients who are under anesthesia, it doesn't make dentists with a capital D inherently perverse. Nothing in life is 100% the way it's "supposed" to be, christ people.
