Hi I'm an engineering student at Olin College of Engineering. My team is creating a GPS Pet Collar that would cost around $30 and would sell online.

We are currently prototyping different designs and would love feedback from knowledgeable pet-owners like you.

So far, our product is a little black box that you attach to your pet's current collar. When you want to know where your pet is, look up your pet's location on Google maps.

Are there any other features that would be important for you?

Sounds cool! I've been interested in these products, but never wanted to pay the prices.

Would there be a monthly fee involved?

My main concern is also that they seem too big for my dogs collar (he's only 16lbs). I'd prefer to attach it to a harness if possible.

I had one of those for my escape artist houdini dog. We ended up discontinuing it because I didn't want to pay the monthly fee. It sent us an alert (text message) when she left a designated area--helpful if we were doing yard work and didn't notice she had climbed the fence!

The downside to what we had (tagg, i believe was the company) is that the designated area was not really scalable. It was only good to a 100 foot radius or something, which means she could run to the neighbor's yard for cat poop and it wouldn't alert us.

I think it would be REALLY cool if it had lit up and/or flashed when she left the zone. At night, I was terrified she would get hit by a car (she's pitch black). A flashing red LED would have been a nice safety feature.

It would not have a monthly fee. :)

That's a great idea CaliTerp07! I'll definitely bring this up with my team.

@JacksonsMom We are trying to make it as small as possible - what's the maximum size your dog could handle?

What kind of range would this have? A friend just lost her dog Sunday night and we were wishing she had some sort of GPS option like this this afternoon while searching. By now the dog could be miles away - would this tracker have any restriction on distance from home? What about battery life?

Also, would these be weatherproof? Waterproof would be especially useful.

Do you have the technology to make them small enough for cats? Specifically an 8lb cat. I use LOC8tor at the moment (attached to a harness), which is a RDF tracker, it is excellent other than the range which isn't that good around houses.

I have a Tagg tracker, too, and wish it was small enough for my cat. It's barely small enough for Sienna, and she's 25 lbs. Also, since she's incredibly fluffy, she normally wears a rolled leather collar, and the Tagg doesn't attach well to that. Had to buy a separate flat collar just for the tracker.

If you could somehow combine microchip technology with GPS tracking...
