It's not just you! I've been frequently told that Australian Shepherds would be a great fit for me, but I've met enough to know that they generally aren't. They have a certain quality that I had never been able to put my finger on, until I heard the term "bouncy" on Chaz. That said, I'd gladly make an exception for Journey, Merlin, Hawkeye, or Cohen. I'm already in love with them so they don't count :p
Bouncy? you mean like this?

...crap. Now I'm worried. I'd really like to have a whippet along with GSDs, but forgot to consider how fragile they are.
Yeah, I mean they're hardy dogs with great sporting home owners but while mal friends post injuries their dogs caused whippet friends seem to post injuries their dogs got playing.

They aren't fragile like get of the couch and break but they have tight thin skin that tips easily and they are so fast and tough that they don't have the self preservation like they should. Of course it's just what I'm seeing that makes me think twice, plus two breeders I put my name in on waiting lists were pretty cautionary about this knowing my mals are rough tough, run full speed slip and slide into the kitchen table flipping it over, type of dogs. lol

That said, I still want one and probably will eventually but it will take some planning and management.

I used to never want a Pembroke Corgi, I have always been taken by the Cardigans that I know. But after meeting a few I like them more and more.

I have no idea really, because I never really thought about what breeds I wanted to own.... When the time came, I just sort of knew it would be a gsp. And the longer I have him, the more I'm happy with that :) I couldn't even tell you how I knew they were right... They're not all that common here, I've never really bumped into any. I did walk one as a kid though.

We have discover dogs here, which is put on at crufts and also in November. It's all about dogs and meeting different breeds.

We should be at crufts next year showing (aaaaaaaaaaargghhhhhhhhhhhh) and I'm hoping to go in November too, so will be nice to see if there are any other dogs that float my boat.

http://www.discoverdogs.org.uk/

I'm sure there are, but I am not like I was when I was younger.... Youth is all about what you want, but now I know more what I don't want :p

Yes!

Like...every herding dog ever :p I guarantee that if I hadn't had the opportunity to hang out with the koolies pretty often I would have thought they were the perfect dog for me! They just seem *so* perfect and awesome (and they ARE, for...people who aren't me :p).
In fact, about an hour or so ago I told Zinga "Zinga, I really do like you a whole lot, but I would never want a koolie" as she demanded I throw the Frisbee for her, and screechy barked/pushed the disc into my hand if I wasn't fast enough. Love doing things with her and Sara, like going on hikes and such, but no interest in taking one on for reals.

Even though I've only lived with Siri for a little over a month, I am really REALLY enjoying this terrier thing. She's intense, but it's a different kind of intense than with the herding breeds, and I'm not sure how to put it into words just quite yet. I definitely think I've found my niche though, and that makes me really excited. :)

PyrSheps were just sorta "eh" to me when I first met them. At that time, I still didn't like anything scruffy looking and pretty much only liked the pointy look for dogs. So at when I happened to be at their first National, nothing really struck me about them (except that they were a lot more...quirky than I would guess such Benji looking dogs would be LOL).

Things change though LOL. I met some Laekens and wanted one bad. I then found myself being more and more attracted to scruffy looking dogs, which was a total turnaround for me. Then I started thinking about what I'd like after the GSDs. I realistically decided that GSDs didn't suit my lifestyle as much as I wanted them to. I wanted to venture outside of Belgians because I've never been a single breed sort, although I'm quite devoted to my involvement with the Belgians. I looked and looked for two years but just kept coming back to PyrSheps (which I had grown to find irresistibly adorable). The more I was around them, the more I wanted one.

I didn't pick Belgians out, it just sort of happened. I never was like "oh I want a Belgian" until one was living with me LOL And Jeff picked getting a Cardi, they're his favorite breed and suit me.

Weims and Viszlas are two breeds that I used to think seems neat until spending lots of time around them at daycare. Now it's like "OMG no...just no". Not that they can't be fine dogs for people who are the right sort of people for them, they just don't suit me in the least.

I always thought Pumis were ugly in pictures but they're really cool dogs and seeing them in person, I tend to find them to be cute. When picking my non-Belgian it sort of came down to a PyrShep, a Pumi, a Mudi or an Entlebucher. PyrSheps won cause nothing else I looked at was quite as crazy and wild as a PyrShep ;)

Yes, definitely. In theory I should like them, but I have met some adorable Australian Shepherds, and it's just flat for me. I thought I wanted a Toller for a while, back when I was unsure about handling a border collie, and the ones I met were darn cute but I just wasn't feeling it. Vizslas were another breeder I was considering, met them and we didn't click.

Vs when I went to the sheepdog trial and was surrounded by Border Collies, that was just like 'okay, yes, this is heaven'.

I do think that it really depends on which dogs I met, though. Considering I've met some horrible, horrible BCs and that didn't really color my opinion of them.

God, yes. I was so certain that Kelpies were "it" for me. I had contacted breeders, was on group lists, and just sure it was going to happen. Then a whole group of Kelpie people from one of my lists was all going to be at an agility trial, and they invited me along so I could meet them. And about 15 minutes after meeting them, I was thinking "never". Just not for me.

On the other end of the spectrum, the sport mixes (border staffs/stacks/jacks) are something I'd always thought "Oh I'd never", just based on what people had said about them, but once I met a few, I realized how much I like them. I'd consider going that way at some point.

I thought Koolies would be a great fit for me but after living with one I would not seek one out. Yes they are great dogs but there is just a certain 'yay life' trait that doesn't gel with me.
And the noise, oh the noise.

A breed I never had an interest in till spending time with them was GSD's. where I train there are several and it seems like most of the other trainers have them to (working lines) and they are beautiful dogs with a great even temperament.
I think they are still too big for me though and if I was going to get a dog for a protection sport I would have to go with a mal.

If you don't like "yay life!" or noise, don't get a Stafford either. :rofl1:

I think there's been certain breeds I've thought I'd like, but then I meet some in person and change my mind. With that said, though, I've honestly never met enough of one breed to be like "THAT'S the breed for me!" after spending time with them.

As much as I want to branch out and often try other breeds, I will say though that little terriers tend to be my favorite, but it might just be because I'm biased with owning one. There's this 9 month old Cairn that frequents the dog park and I'm just in love with him and his energy. I don't like most JRT's but I think the right one with a good temperament, I would enjoy too.

I will say Dobermans were one of those breeds that I have now met a few times and NEVER thought I'd ever look into them, but I could see myself owning a Dobe one day. So that's one that was completely off my radar, and suddenly spiked an interest. I really like their overall temperament and just the 'feel' I've gotten from them.

GSD's are a breed I swore I'd have again someday... but now I'm not so sure. I've met too many with nervy temperaments and have small issues I wouldn't want to deal with. It would have to be the perfect dog for me and from the appropriate type of breeder.

Lol. I know they've been out for a while. I love hanging out with them and I totally see the appeal but I take it too personally when my dog wants everyone else to be their friend as well.

I love yay life dogs as long as they have the right kind of edge. I find more and more I love the overly happy, ready to try anything and have fun dogs with some drive added in. Mia is almost always moving at a happy bounce (unless the ball is involved that's srs business. Summer quite often pogo sticks her excitement and I love that.

I don't even know how to describe it because a lot of yay happy breeds annoy me.

I'm all for yay happy breeds as long as they have enough drive to focus on the task at hand. The yay happy dogs that have a hard time staying on task annoy me.

It's funny, Poppy and Traveler are totally siblings in that aspect but Didgie? She's like "Oh hi. That's nice." and comes right back to me like "Are we doing something?"

Honestly, I haven't been enamored with any breed other than Koolies. I thought I might want an ACD or a Corgi but it was more just learning what I like in dogs that swayed me away from them rather than meeting them. That was just the icing on the cake.

Belgians, my friend, Belgians. :lol-sign:

Though I think that PyrShep you're after will do it for you too!
I love Belgians a lot. But they're big. Lol. The more I'm around in my training club (so many tervs!) he more I think I'll have one one day. But not likely next.

They are big-ish (well to me)! And mine doesn't understand where her body is or what it's doing most of the time, so I get my face stepped on and my chest vaulted off a lot. LOL.
