Feel free to remind our elected officials about that.
I do:)

Dont get me wrong, there have been a LOT of things I am not happy about. I do feel like there have been some important freedoms taken away in the last several decades. However, I dont think its an us vs them, or some huge conspiracy and we DO have the power to change it (without physically fighting).

What are people expecting to happen that might warrant a survival pack?
The unexpected. Basically you never know what Life has in store for you. You never know when a natural disaster may hit or even what kind it will be, you never know if the power will go out or for how long (there was a huge power outage a decade ago that left the east coast of Canada and part of the US completely without power, some for days and I remember our power at work came on earlier than everyone else an people were begging for water to feed teir infants formula), or when you may have to leave your home suddenly or lose your home all together ( like fire).

I don't know... People laugh but there is NOTHING wrong or crazy with being prepared. If something happens those will be the people you are begging for help from. You can't know what life will throw at you so eing prepared for an emergency can't be a bad thing.

Nothing wrong with being prepared at all...in fact I would argue its kind of silly not to be at least partially (and I am including myself here because its one of those things I always mean to get around to).

However, I have met too many people for whom it becomes well, almost a disorder. Its fueled by total paranoia and consumes them. That I find sad.

You do partially have a point, IMO, but I think voters are more of the problem. American politics is trashy, childish and extremely partisan. One thing is people complaining about money in politics and two seconds later donating to politicians, PACs and whatnot.

See, this is where we disagree. I do not think any sort of voting system is going to change the way the government has the world mapped out. I don't think we can change anything. Especially since we can't even control who's calling the shots.

We are prepared to fight against the government and run away and live in the woods, but we aren't insane about it. Our bags have been packed and sitting in the closet for many months now, and we're done physically preparing. We trap and shoot a lot as a hobby to refine our skills, and we don't want mainstream media or rely on television for our information whatsoever. We have a tv and all it plays is Netflix. :)

OH I forgot one...
Loss of job.

Now you can't really prepare for long term job loss but when Brian was out of a job in the summer we didn't know how long that would be, it sure was a blessing we had a nice food supply on hand that would last us a few months. It ended up being only a month but we were lucky

And then having a supply of guns and ammo and the know how to hunt, catch and grow food is extremely helpful

Ha ha! I'm going to practice my spear throwing and tomahawk skills (which are both nonexistent).

I guess this is one of those things that feel iffy about putting on the internet either way. People will just have to guess whether or not I'm defended by firearm and take their chances (by people I mean a certain person I have a restraining order against who is probably reading this right now).

He has since changed political opinions and simply does not support the government whatsoever or the government's control over the armed forces and using it to their own gain. They are not looking out for the people anymore and that is something he is very up in arms about.
Nothing new about politicians using the military to make themselves & their friends rich. The banana wars of the early 20th century were all about making the world safe for Chiquita & a sugar conglomerate. Heck Smedley Butler even wrote a book about it called "war is a racquet."
I completely understand his feelings & agree in principle.

9.0 earthquakes 100 miles off the coast. 7.0 inland, where up to 20 years ago, no one believed an earthquake over 5 could happen. Blizzards and hurricanes.

Less so guns than food and water here. Not much to shoot after the first few squirrels, and research has showed that in a disaster people are usually pretty well behaved. A gun might be nice, but I'm thinking a revolver would work as well as an AR in a lot of places.

In a flood you go higher, tornadoes destroy a small area so help can be fairly quick coming. Major earthquakes or major blizzards though, you may be on your own for a while.
Apparently that research didn't include NO after Katrina & NYC after sandy. Rapes, assaults & theft by violence were rampant. Heck in NO they even had a couple of cops kill some folks for $#!+$ & giggles. And a shotgun is generally the best choice unless you spend ALOT of time training.

Or all the violence in Haiti, especially the sexual assaults that are still happening in displacement camps.

Probably. My boyfriend and I are both very anti-government, and we're waiting for them to try to take away the rest of our rights... because we're not going to be detained for resisting and we're not going to hand over our guns, etc.

Just... different strokes, ya know? I don't expect anyone to understand the things we think and feel, I just ask for a little respect about everyone's opinions, because I know ours are "out there". We don't feel they're unrealistic at all. (not say you or anyone else here are disrespecting opinions/each other, just a general note I add when talking about this type of thing). :)
This is one time I'm going to say the government absolutely does reflect the people. The govt didn't invent the idea of telling you how to live your life. It was your neighbor that came up with the idea of telling you what kind of dog you can own & how many. It was your other neighbor that thinks no one should own a SUV. And the other neighbor that decided it was okay to forcible take your land & sell it to a business to bring a couple hundred jobs to the area. And yet another neighbor that decided people in France shouldn't eat your horse. And definitely your neighbor that tried to tell me & my friends in the south that hunting deer with dogs was a moral abomination worse than pedophilia. Basically for the last half century pretty much every segment of our society has been steadily acclimating to the idea they know better how you should live your life than you do. The part that dumbfounds me, is that the guy that gets bent over gun rights can't see the hypocrisy in supporting BSL.

Oh there are so many theories to list... Gun bans, mandatory vaccinating, forced moves for agenda 21, a fatal virus being given to Americans, a currency crash and burn, more false flag attacks.. Just about anything can send us into a state of emergency so that all the rules are changed.

Our response is going to be to evade/flee and take our ruck sacks and head southwest in winter or north in summer. We can live out of them permanently given decent weather for the region.
Don't go too far southwest, about a hundred miles west of the Mississippi your ability to live off the land drops off dramatically. Mostly it's a water issue, the lack of it also means less edible plants & lower wildlife populations. For meat focus on trapping, as in a "zombie apocalypse" big game gets scarce fast & even traditional small game (birds & rabbits) take a hard hit. If the EPA would attack pollution in surface waters instead of chasing global warming red herrings, fishing would be a viable long term option.

Seriously, for long term survival, your best bet is to homestead. A descent piece of land, with a good well so you can raise your own crops & meat situated in a way that is defensible. Instead of bugging out you just reinforce.
