Does your SO like your breed choice?

One of the few breeds that Josh and I can definitely agree on are border collies. I absolutely LOVE them and they have definitely grown on him. We will probably ALWAYS have a border collie or BC mix in this household. In fact, I've started looking into potential breeders for possible future border collie at some point. Kind of leaning towards a smooth coat.

Cricket isn't exactly a breed, but I know she has Josh sold on street dogs from Mexico. He adores that dog! We will definitely be rescuing another one day.

Ibizan Hounds- Josh is not a huge fan. He does like Joey somewhat, but they really aren't his breed of choice. If he could choose his breed it definitely wouldn't be a beezer.

I also really want a Xolo one day and he isn't fond of the hairless ones at ALL... he likes their temperament since they are so similar to Cricket's temperament, but the hairless dogs kind of freak him out.

What he DOES like...

Josh really likes herding breeds. He loves BCs, but seems really drawn to ACDs as well. He also loves bully breeds from APBTs all the way down to English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs. I actually wouldn't mind a frenchie one day as well.

Your turn. How does your SO feel about your breed choice or even "dog type" choice if you mainly stick with rescued mix breeds?

Chris is VERY particular on the dog breeds he likes. He picked out Gwen, but we didn't know what breed she was.

He prefers large dogs. He loves the Sibes, any kind of 'snow dog'. We're trying to find a small breed that we both like and it's nearly impossible.

He likes dogs but I don't think he really cares enough. At first, he might say no to certain breeds, but if I really wanted it, he wouldn't mind.

Although there is no way I could sneak a Frenchie in. :lol-sign: He's not a fan of the pugs, bulldogs, etc. He likes very dog looking dogs.

And black dogs. Big, black, fluffy dogs.

I think a lot of his likes are just based on looks and not the actual temperament of the breed, so it might be easily to change his views. After talking to Lyzelle, I doubt he would want to have a Sibe. But they are gorgeous.

Anything wolf-like gets an immediate "WANT".

As far as future dogs.... I will get what I want, unless he really hates the dog. We will probably continue going with shelter/rescues. We WILL get a small breed. He can just get over that! (If I just give him a ferret, I could get away with any dog breed. :rofl1: )

If he weren't married to me, I don't think my husband would have dogs at all. He likes dogs, some might even say he loves OUR dogs, but he's more of a cat person.

So he pretty much leaves it up to me. The only specific input I've gotten is that he doesn't like labs. And when we had our greyhound he used to joke about having a herd of them, so I think he'd love to have another retired racer someday. Other than that, I don't think he much cares about breed or mix. A dog is pretty much a dog to him.

Uhm, yes and no. Josh loves Boxers, so that went over pretty good. He's grown up with American Bulldogs, so the Bullies are not a hard sell for him AT ALL. Rider is a little weird. We think he is an ACD/BC. Josh would not have picked him for himself at all, and I don't know that if anything happened to me, that he would be able to handle him.

He prefers a little bit of a "harder" dog, which is why he kind of stepped away from the Vizsla. He would LOVE LOVE LOVE a Cur someday, but we just don't have the resources right now to keep up with their energy. With Josh working alternating 52/40 hour weeks, it just wouldn't work. There is a fantastic Griff breeder around here, and those dogs are a little bit harder, a little bit less energy, yet still very drivey and versatile. They can go from a point, to a retrieve, to a bunny run, to chilling on the couch, which is what he is looking for.

As far as my breeds, for right now and the future, Koolies, BC's, and ACD's, the only one he is really sold on is the ACD, though he doesn't think I need a puppy next year. Again, it has to do with the hardness of the dog. Honestly, I prefer the same in a dog, so we tend to jive pretty well for breed choices.

Sigh, Rick. We do not have similar tastes in breeds... at all, lol.

I'm really into medium-large intense herding and working breeds, as well as bully breeds, he's... not so much. He's really all over the place. He likes beagles, chis, shibas, cardis, poms, tollers, anything under 50lbs that wants to snuggle with him. He's hinted at another lab, but I reallllly do not want. We did see a gold border collie in a car yesterday that he decided he really liked, so that's a start lol. All of that being said, he is (and refers to himself as) a cat person who likes dogs.

I should say that he has extremely limited in the breeds that he's met. He's 19 and has met probably less than 50 dogs in his life.

Josh and I have very similar tastes in dogs. He pretty much likes all dogs though LOL. We actually met and started hanging out because he loved Quinn so much!

We both love ESs (obviously!), Border Collies, Corgis, Aussies, Australian Cattle Dogs, he loves Papillons even more than I do, Flat Coats, Tollers, Koolies. He doesn't like Chihuahuas or Cavs, or the look of Borzois as much as I do - but I'm working on him He does like Spitz types more than I tend to and has a big soft spot for Keeshonds.

Nope! He does not like high maintenance dogs. My breeds of choice are as high maintenance as they come. Heck, he doesn't like maintaining low maintenance dogs. It's a shame, but we survive.

I have two breeds. Chinese Cresteds and Akitas. My husband would probably not own either of those breeds if he weren't with me. I know, for a fact, that he would never own a crestie. It has nothing to do with their appearance, either. Their temperament/personality is just totally the opposite of what he likes in a dog. Our Akita, on the other hand, he loves, but would most likely not want a dog like her for himself. She's what we like to call A LOT of dog.

He has an English Shepherd and probably always will. He's expressed interest in owning a Leonberger (which shocked me!) ,but his breed is definitely the ES.

I just wanted to say that there are a TON of Josh's on here.

And that Quinn often starts major discussions in my head about ES's. If only they were a touch more drivey, and a touch less reactive-prone.

You can definitely find some higher drive ones, although it can be a bit of a longer search than trying to find that drive in say an Aussie or a BC. And they aren't actually prone to reactivity - Quinn is DR (very cool in all other regards) but I've said before that I believe that it my mishandling of her policing personality.

Hubby's not really into breeds as a whole, but he's a big fan of the individuals I've brought home . Says I'm picking all future dogs too since so far it's worked out very well lol.

Now if we have Mirapups and he falls hard for a particular puppy...yeah I don't know how that will go.

He likes happy bouncy snuggly dogs. Both mine are that to a T.


In all fairness, the dogs are my 'thing'. He loves them dearly, but he knows ill get my own way with the dog thing every time

My husband loves Henry but thinks he's a bit of a mama's boy, which he is. Henry's a softie and has always been 'my' dog. Within the last year or so he's started on a hardcore campaign of becoming Henry's favorite. It's actually pretty cute. Now he gets excited when Henry sleeps with him, cuddles with him, or obeys his commands rapidly. "Look how good he listens to me!!!"

He's really not into bully breeds but our next one is going to be an Amstaff. I think he'll really like the attributes of the breed once he gets to know one. His dislike is mostly going off looks. But I think the drive and personality of a well bred bull breed will win him over big time.

I don't have an SO but most my family are labby kind of people. They always compare my dogs to their 'good old labs' and I want to scream. They just can't appreciate the papillons at all. My dad likes the papillons ok, but he's a gundog person at heart. My step-family seem to really not enjoy the paps.

Emily, my sister likes papillons a lot. We also both share a love for Aussies and she's planning on getting an Aussie after she graduates. My other sister likes papillons but i get the feeling she's not much of a dog person like I am. She likes dogs for sure but I will be surprised if she has a dog when she gets out of the house.

I can almost guarantee that most of my family is going to loathe my future breed choices. I am so glad I don't have to live with them anymore, it makes things much easier.

Although, now that Bailey isn't living with me, he says he misses her more often than I'd have thought. She's a really, really fun dog... when her brain is working properly. He apparently liked having her as his co-pilot in the Miata...

Yes, that's a good way of putting it for us, too. His only preferences for dogs I think is that they be friendly and generally do what he tells them to do (which is usually just getting off the couch when he wants to sit down).

Matt would have a house full of pit bulls. He's met a ton through the rescue I work with and he's sold. He's not a herding breed guy, Finn annoys him.

I don't have an SO, but since Laurelin answered and she also doesn't, I wanted to answer too. Especially since I do live with my family for the time being and probably will for a few more years yet at least.

In my family, dogs are my thing. My mom loves dogs as well, but she's not as big on specific breeds. Her only real breed love is a Great Dane, and she's never had one, because we get mixed reviews of what they're actually like to live with temperament and energy wise. Not sure if she'll ever have one or not. But anyway, my mom prefers single coated, large dogs who are happy to lay around and not do much. Maybe go on an occassional walk. She wants a dog that's relatively easy to train and easy to live with that has manners and does what it's told. She likes what the average pet person likes: A dog to come home to, to be a buddy, to cuddle with, feed and love without a whole lot of extra work involved. She could not handle a DA or DR dog I don't think (that's why I don't let her walk Ripley - he can be DR on leash), and likes a dog either people friendly or aloof (but not shy or aggressive). My mom and a Greyhound would go well together I think. Except that my mom doesn't like how they look.

I, OTOH, like a dog that is easy to live with in the house, but also one that is FUN! I like to play with my dogs, train in sports, play disc, teach tricks, go places and do things with my dog tagging along, etc. I want something intelligent, eager and ready to do something at the drop of a hat, but then settles well also. Whereas my mom just wants the settles well part haha. I also like a smaller dog than my mom likes. I prefer 30-45lbs. I prefer a middle of the road temperament. Not too soft, not too hard. But I can deal with hard, whereas my mom does better with a middle of the road to a softer temperament. I am attracted to athletic herding breeds and some sporting breeds whereas my mom is attracted to huge, lazy looking dogs. I want more Aussies throughout my lifetime, probably more Tollers if I don't compare to Dance too much, and maybe some other herding breeds (Koolie, Border Collie, a hairy Belgian). My mom would never seek out any of those.

And then there's my brother, who couldn't care less whether we had dogs or not. He's probably opt for the 'or not'. It's not that he doesn't like dogs, but he doesn't want any of the responsibilities of living with dogs and thinks they're more work than they're worth. He's never been a dog guy. He pets them, talks to them and lets them out, but that's about it. Unless he marries a dog person one day, I doubt my brother will ever have a dog once he leaves home. And if he does, it'll be something smaller. Like 10-20lbs. And I'm pretty sure the only breed he's ever expressed any interest in is a Beagle, but I doubt he likes them enough to seek one out. To him a dog is a dog and I don't think he cares much about breeds.

With all of that said though, we have a house full of active and demanding breeds. And while my mom gets overwhelmed with the Dobermans sometimes (as do I - it's the type of energy, not how much), she still enjoys them. And she loves Dance and Journey too and thinks they're a lot of fun. These just are not breeds she would do well with if she lived on her own, though.
