I think I shall be joining the group of people who keep their dogs' collars off when they are home. This morning Fable was in her crate and partially dislodged the divider (I didn't have it set up straight). She was happy to be getting out for a morning pee and run, so was thrashing about excitedly.
Then she didn't come when I opened the door of the crate. I have a bunch of junk on the crate and couldn't see her, so when I bent down I saw her collar was caught on a hook of the divider. She was pulling away from it but couldn't. I bent around and tried to pull the divider toward me but the hooks kept catching.
She wasn't making any sound, just opening and closing her mouth. My mom brought me scissors but the collar was so tight I couldn't fit the blade under. Soon she stooped struggling altogether and scared me so much. Lucy popped into my mind and I was just thinking I'll be damned before I lose my puppy, too! :( FINALLY I was able to twist myself in the right position to yank and turn the twisted part of the collar off the hook. (That was the first thing I tried but couldn't.)
She stood dazed for a second but then ran to the backdoor to be let out.

I was just terrified. It lasted about a minute but seemed to go on forever. I've always wanted it to be clear how to get my dogs back home with their tags if they escaped, but I took Fable's collar off and it's been off since.
I'm just so glad my funny little idiot dog is okay! <3

Uh oh! Glad it turned out okay! I would be for sure taking out that divider, though.

A breakaway collar sounds like it might be a good idea for her!

Thanks, Jen! Yup, the divider is out.
A breakaway collar is definitely in my plans. I much prefer buckle collars over snaps, but I found myself wishing she had a simple snap this morning! A breakaway collar would ease my anxiety. I mean, I can't bear to think of what could have happened if I wasn't there!

That is so scary! I'm really happy there wasn't a worse ending. But seriously, I can't imagine how sick you felt.

Oh wow that's really scary, I've had similar issues before (but with two dogs getting jaws caught when playing). I've had legs get caught under the divider too.

The snap collars do not unsnap if it is under extreme pressure, so even then they aren't much help.

I agree. Had the same scary experience too. The snap collar was caught in a piece of steel protruding from the chipped off cement block in the yard and I can't remove it as the dog is also struggling to get free. Fortunately, a neighbor arrived and removed the collar. I was so scared and thought Kenny would be a goner.

Omg that must have been super scary!! I'm glad you were able to get her unhooked. When I stopped having the girls wear collars in the house (due to fighting) I got everyone micro-chipped. It's not as good as tags but it's going to have to do.

I can't even imagine! Oof, I'm so glad this was just a really good scare, though, and didn't end with any serious injuries or problems.

We joined the collars off club, too, but that's because both dogs know how to remove eachother's collars and think they make great toys to hide under the shed. :p

Stories like yours are definitely why I stopped having the dogs wear collars while crated! Scary stuff! Glad Fable's ok!

SO scary! As a dogsitter, I've always taken the collars off of dogs who are crated (per the owners request). So I would definitely not have any collar on while in the crate.

I'm so glad it turned out okay. I can't even imagine!

You and Fable are so lucky, glad everything worked out. I haven't put a dog in a crate wearing a collar in many years for that very reason.

I haven't kept them on my dogs for years unless they are going on a walk or would be out for an extended period of time. The one time out husky did disappear she has her tags on and the people who had her never called!

We stopped after my cousin was out of town and her neighbor was watching their bc along with their dog that got along good. Dogs were playing and then all got quiet. This was years ago but from what I remember both were unconscious and she got my cousins bc breathing again but not her own dog. They were so twisted together and freaked out to much once they realized what happened. I think one may have had a prong collar on to which doesn't help but can't swear to it. Been a long time.

I am glad your dog is ok ... that must have been horrifying!!! :(

I also had a scare with a collar & thanks to the late, great Izze, the dog survived:

I was at home on my day off (was living at home at the time because I was in an employment slump kinda) when I hward scratching at the door, I opened it to see Izze standing there, now she NEVER scratched at the door ... EVER so I was like "whats wrong with you?" she kept running around the corner & coming back, barking. I just assumed that it was one of the livesrock near the fence & ignored her, but she wouldnt stop. So, annoyed, I went around the corner & was horrified to see Bear, the jack russell we have, my agility/obedience champion & at the time, show dog choking on his collar becausxe he had been bitten by a rattle snake & the swelling was causing him to choke.

so no, my dogs dont wear collars either.. they are microchipped.
