I'm killing time before peeling potatoes for supper, and so I decided to browse Petfinder. I'm seeing lots of breeds I haven't seen before up for adoption down here.

There's a litter of ACD puppies (which are quite popular in rural areas, yet tend to be the "rarer" of breeds found in this area). There's an adult male Chinese Crested dog. Make that 1 male and 2 female Cresteds.

There's a Corgi/GSD cross (which is quite....interesting? lol). Many, many Dachshunds, including some weird looking dilutes.

A Rottweiler/Great Dane mix. o_O

This is your typical Baton Rouge backyard pit bull neglect case, but I LOVE this guy's ears!

"Uhh...he went thata way"

"Uhh, I meant thata way"

"Uhh, or mehbeh thata way"

But those poor sad eyes.... :(

Standard Poodle (completely NOT my cup o' tea, but definitely not a breed you see often down here, much less in a shelter)

And there are soooooo many "pit bulls" and "labrador retrievers" (mainly black "labs"). It really is sad that both types of dogs are bred so freaking willy nilly.

And there's a huge increase in Chihuahuas and Shih Tzus as well.

And freshly groomed...? Imagine (well, hope anyway) that one's owner is going to show up looking for them in short order.

We have groomers that volunteer their time at the local shelters and rescues (my friend is a local groomer that does so as much as she can).

As far as it's story goes, I'm not sure, but there is a mandatory 3-7 day hold down here depending on the shelter, so the owners have/had their chance.

Ahh, I see. On second look, I guess the Poodle is sitting on a grooming table huh? Doh. Well, I was hoping he/she had owners coming, anyway. :( Still, great of those groomers to volunteertheir time and skill. I wonder how it's affected adoption rates?

It would be nice if the owner got the dog back as long as the owner isn't an ignoramus.

I believe the adoption rate for this dog is $150, but most at that smaller rescue are around that amount.

As for the groomers, I know my friend doesn't charge anything for it. She just enjoys helping get the dogs all cleaned up and spiffy to help them get adopted.

Oh, what I meant by "adoption rate" was more how many dogs are being adopted now who would have normally been passed right on by because they're dirty and scruffy, than their cost. :) I'm not even a Poodle person and I'd have at least stopped to look at him, so...

Oh, LOL. WHOOSH! That went right over my head. :rofl1:

It helps a lot. Like you, I wouldn't give a poodle a second glance, but that guy indeed caught my eye. I know my friend tries her best to do all the fancy show cuts and whatnot, but sometimes there's no choice but for her to shave a dog due to all the mats and neglect.

She also puts bows at the base of the ears on pit bulls. It's, ummm, quite a sight.

Weird. LOL The shelters in the city area all have volunteer groomers :lol-sign:
Must be a Canadian thing. :p The shelter here doesn't groom the dogs, to be honest I'm happy to no longer walk the kennels and see dogs who'd been sitting there for days with gaping skull wounds full of flies (the previous shelter before this one).
