Meat has the same hormone problems as milk, apparently. At least that's what I've read.

Milk cows are often pregnant cows. Pregnant cows produce a high level of hormones. They are natural hormones, but not necessarily good for humans.

This is different than, say, a milk cow who has been injected with a hormone that increases milk production, or hormones added to their feed. Buyer beware on purchasing meat.
However, it is 100% impossible to get hormone-free milk (even milk from a not pregnant cow contains hormones.)

I don't care if my shoes are ugly if I'm just going to be using them for working out. A lot of people keep mentioning the VFFs and I've heard so many positive things about them... but as soon as I mentioned them to my boss she said to stay away from them especially since I have issues with the arches of my feet cramping up badly when I work out.
VFFs seem to have MAJOR issues for people if they start using them constantly without an adjustment period. Have you ever gone to the beach for a week or two, skipped shoes unless you were going to a restaurant for the whole trip, and felt how sore your feet are from all the use they endured while barefoot? Think of it like that, except without the soft sand and with asphalt instead. I want a pair pretty badly right now and my only worry is that I will beat up my feet by doing too much too soon.

Self control and I don't get along.

I just want to say ((((((HUGS)))))

This.

Also, I've known some people who react more to grain-fed milk cows than grass-fed. Processed milk vs. Unprocessed milk. But overall, it's the hormones.

And the only issues I've heard from meat is the highly processed grain-fed meat often bought from the supermarkets. It's pretty gross to think about.

Another Paleo fan. I like that it's easy - no 'you can have wheat, but not rice' kinda rules. Just eat meat, eggs, veggies, fruit and nuts. I do have dairy as well, not a ton, but some cheese and home made greek yogurt. Usually during the day I have my coffee, then fruit and veggies, maybe a bit of meat, or dip, sometimes greek yogurt, then dinner is meat and two or more veggies.

A few months ago, I found out I have high blood pressure. On meds daily, the side effects aren't great, but I'm also on a high dose so it's to be expected. Also now have fatty liver, no issues as far as I know yet, but it could be a lot worse, and gallstones. Doctor ran a ton of tests and found more issues than the blood pressure!

I started with cutting salt, and that means all the processed foods. There's a lot of crappy food out there and now we read labels (lunchables, my kids love them - 37% of your daily intake of sodium if you eat 2000 calories a day - they don't!) Then started eating less grains, opting for more veggies, then now do mostly paleo. I find I'm not that hungry, feel better and no more pms or other issues (other than now, because it's the holiday and I'm eating more crap).

ETA - coconut oil is amazing in your coffee. YUM! That's another thing, start with small changes and work up to goals. I used to live on the flavored coffee creamers in my coffee, now I take just cream, no sugar. A flavored sweetened coffee used to be great, now it's like drinking syrup.;) I just started using less and less of it...

I also find it has been harder to lose any weight I might put on since I hit my 30's .when I was in my teens & 20's it was like ... NP at all to lose weight & I could eat whatever I wanted ... Now I have to, when I don't have a physically demanding job watch what I eat ... I can hardly eat anything & it sucks because normally I am quite a junky eater LOL (pizza, sweets, candy, ice cream etc...).

But when I do have a job like this one that is demanding, (riding, cleaning stalls, ponying horses etc...) I can eat almost anything & not gain weight ... BUT ... when I am working I hardly ever get hungry & I can't eat when I'm riding due to the jostling around, I would be liking it up all over the track.

Aw, hang in there! Just remember that it is ALL about number of calories. Make sure ou get plenty of nutrients and eat at a deficite of about 500 cals below maintenance daily. And eat enough fats! Low fat makes diets fail. :)

I need to lose a few, so I say a Chaz weight loss support thread would be great for the New Year. We can set goals and cheer each other on.

My feet can only handle zero drop/thin soled shoes, but you must transition SLOWLY. It will cause more arch pain if you don't. Your arches have a job to do, and minimalist shoes allow for that, but most people have atrophied feet and legs frmo built up shoes and it takes a long time to develop everything.

First off, thank you guys SO much for the support. Seriously means a LOT to me.

The biggest VFF complaints from doctors (I researched before diving in) is abuse, people put them on and do no allow proper time to adjust. Your feet and body have been trained to remain out if line for so long that it pretty much feels right. VFFs encourage natural movement and thus adjustment. They're best used as a slow but steady immersion. Meaning I felt my best (with high arches, shin splints, a pinching hip, and aching back from compensating my stride to accommodate) after adjusting and then proceeding to wear them instead of other shoes as often as possible.

That said, a doctors visit for all of this sounds best and there are tons of research options online about barefoot running and it's pros and cons for bodies grown up wearing shoes.
That's what I was thinking. I think my boss probably just heard a few bad reviews from people who rushed into wearing them all the time and I can see how you could wind up with stress fractures if you rushed into them.

I decided to buy myself a pair (as I mentioned in the venting thread when I ripped my pants). Tomorrow I'm going to wear them for at least 20 minutes or so and I found some tips online for transitioning into them. I'm really excited about them actually.

Are you on MFP? Seriously that site is awesome and I can't wait to get started again on it when I am home. If not, join and friend me. It makes dieting so much less work!

Also you should get a nice bike and do stuff with the dogs, making working out FUN by combining it with stuff you love. I bet Bamm would love running next to a bike! If you can find lesser used trails and buy a springer attachment I bet he would have a ball!

You can do this!!
I'm not on MFP, but I'm on Sparkpeople which is pretty similar. I can check out MFP though to see if I'd prefer it to SP.

The bolded is something I actually really want to do and honestly out of my dogs I think Bamm would be the best fit for running next to me on a bike. I can probably find a used bike on craigslist for a fair price.

You should go try to get diagnosed. It sounds like a hormonal imbalance rather than PCOS, but it could be either. All I know is with most of the time with PCOS, you will have massive amounts of pain in between periods from the cysts. I know I did.
It depends. Quite a few people in my family have PCOS. My sister didn't have pain between periods at all and she does actually have cysts. She does have some pain when she is actually on her period, but not between periods. I know people that do have pain and other people that don't have any pain at all.

Paleo is definitely what I was going to suggest. Rather than just going gluten free, remove ALL carbs or at least cut back on them as much as you possibly can. Rice, corn, oats, quinoa, all out (or down.) Paleo is not necessarily low carb but based on what you remove and what you DO eat, it usually ends up being pretty low carb.
I eat more primal (still eat dairy) but I think you should try cutting dairy out too. Many people believe there is a link with dairy and reproductive issues. I have endometriosis and before I got to depo to get rid of my vomit-inducing periods people recommended I cut out dairy. I believe some women with PCOS also have success with removing dairy. If it's too much all at once, remove the grain first. I don't subscribe to the WHEAT IS KILLING EVERYBODY newsletter like some do, but I don't think wheat is really doing anything good for anybody (except being kinda delicious) and that removing it will DO good. So no grains, not even "whole" grains. Then you can try removing dairy later once you've adjusted.
Set yourself up for success based on what you can do... if you know cutting too many things at once will make you feel deprived, DON'T DO IT all at once! Just pick one thing. Live with it for a few weeks, then pick something else.

Basically shift yourself to a lifestyle of eating lots of meat, nuts, veggies, and fruit. Experiment once you're there to see what will make you feel better. Maybe you need to drop the fruit down. Some people don't do well on nuts. But once you cut the crap out, it starts to get easier to listen to your body and figure stuff out. I used to be sick so often, I mean I was literally just used to living my life feeling sick, planning my life around meals ("I can't eat now because it might make me sick and I need to do X later.") - and that has all GONE AWAY since I removed wheat and cut way way WAY down on other grains. And suddenly it's so much easier to listen to my body because it's not sick all the time.

This means the eating out has to change. No more grabbing a sandwich. Grill a bunch of chicken up at the beginning of the week and put it in a baggy. Then grab a chicken breast (or thigh or tenderloin or whatever it is) and some veggies, a small/medium apple, pear, orange. THAT is your lunch. Brown bag it. Save money and your health.

Thank you SOOOOO much!!!! I think you honestly have me convinced that Paleo is worth the shot and since I first read this post from you (just hadn't gotten a chance to respond until now) I've been doing a little researching on the web and I think paleo is the route I'm for sure going to take. I've cut dairy out officially today and I'm going to ease my way into eating paleo. Probably going to have lots of questions.

Thank you! :) I made the jump and bought a pair of spyridon VFFs. These exact ones to be specific since I liked the tread on them for what I was wanting them for:

So excited to SLOWLYYYY ease my way into them. I want to just jump into them and run and have fun with them, but I definitely need to take it slow.

High Blood Pressure is another thing that unfortunately seems to run in my family... I know my dad and two my sisters have high blood pressure and I wouldn't be surprised if I do too. Last time I had it checked my blood pressure was a little high, but the doctor said it could have been that I was nervous about my appointment too which can spike your blood pressure up a little temporarily as well. She mentioned it wasn't too concerning at that point, but that I do need to be careful.

My dad is also diabetic (was diagnosed less than a year ago). He is super interested in the paleo diet as well and I think it would be a great option for him. I'm hoping that by going paleo and seriously watching what I eat and working out a lot more that I can get all this crap under control.

HBP runs in my family too, grandmother on dads side died of heart disease when she was in her 70s grandpa on dads side died of Alzheimer's when he was in his 80s & let me tell you of I had to choose it rather have heart disease or even csncer then Alzheimer's ... Horrible disease :(.

I take the fat free creamer & sugar in my coffee (tho not too much, just enough to get the flavor). I try to eat as good as I can but I will admit to liking my pizza, burgers & whatever.

I just wanted to add that I was cruising Amazon and saw several Paleo cookbooks for Kindle for $2 and $3. Not that you can't get receipes online for free, but I'm a total nerd and love cookbooks. **Confession**
