When your dog passes away, what are you planning to do with their remains?

I know, I know... morbid thread right before the holidays... but reading the thread about the cremation jewelry and life gems made me think about it.

As of right now, my plan is to have them cremated. I want to have their ashes made into cremation jewelry so they can always be close to me.

I have no idea how I'm going to cope when that day comes. Ugh :(

Plant a new fruit tree in their ashes (not just ashes, of course). I'm not typically a sentimental person. But I like the idea of new growth coming out of their ashes.

That is a fantastic idea.

I almost selected tattoo but I don't want an ashes tattoo, that's uncomfortable for me.

Probably cremation. I'd consider cremation jewelry but I think I'd rather get jewelry made out of their tags. I saw the idea mentioned on Chaz a really long time ago and it's always stuck with me - it would be like having them close to me but without the weird ( weird to me!!) bone ashes factor.

That's such a good idea. I think that Sparks planted a tree for Teddy when he passed away.

Well, my horse was buried up near a bunch of trees at the barn but my instructor cut off some of her tail hair for me and got the farrier to come pull off her shoes so I could keep them. I'm planning on finding somebody to do a nice horsehair bracelet for me so that I can always have her close.

As for Moses and Cali, I'd probably get them cremated just so that if we ever moved or anything, their bodies wouldn't be left behind. But for now, I'll just pretend they're immortal. Losing Indie was, and still is hard, even after only two and a half months.. so I can't imagine losing Cali and especially Moses, since he's basically been here my whole life.

Burial or burial of cremated remains at my parent's with the other pets. My friend's puppy is buried out by the garden there too... she was living in an apartment so yeah. I buried her box of ashes by the irises while they were in bloom and scattered marigold seeds through the top layer of dirt.

Cremation and then mixed with my ashes when I am cremated. I still have to figure out where we'll be scattered...keeps changing as I go through life, but as of now the place I like is under a stand of trees in the forest preserve by my home where we spend alot of time. I have Dillan, Tahnee, Brandy, and Gorby's cremains in my bedroom...

So far we've had our pets cremated. For now I have the ashes in urns, I'm not ready to let them go yet and although I'm pretty sure of this I want to be MORE sure that I'll be in this house until someone takes ME out in a body bag (or a wheelchair) and not leave them behind.

But someday when I am ready I will likely either scatter them at a place they loved (like the dog park), in the garden, or have them scattered with my ashes when I'm gone (if there's anyone left still alive I trust to make sure it's done).

ETA: I do have some jewelry that I put a few hairs from each pet that had died in, and I've looked into stuff like jewelry or other mementos made with the ashes (like blown glass paperweights or pendants incorporating ashes for example). But so far I'm a bit weirded out by the idea of splitting the ashes up. I have weird attachment issues about it, I think.

OH, for the ferrets, I also have the choice of burying them at the vice-pres' parents' property, where we bury all the ferrets that have passed away in our care.

That's what we've done only we've planted a redbud tree for each. It honestly doesn't bother me that my dad is getting ready to move away from the house where Harry, Hiro, Trey, and Nikki are buried. I don't know if I'm just not sentimental or something but it's not something that bothers me.

My pets all promised me they would never die, but if they ever break that promise I will have them cremated. I would spread some of Saxon's ashes in the park and on the beach. I would put the remainder in an urn by "By & By Memorials," they are absolutely gorgeous. http://byandbymemorials.com/?page_id=58 Bowie and Ziggy will go in the same urn because they love each other so much. I haven't really thought to much about what I would do with the gerbils.

Ours are cremated, but I haven't done anything with the ashes yet. We don't own a house, so I'm weird about scattering them here, I suppose. I haven't seen any jewelry I like yet, but the idea is nice. Not sure I'd be able to take out some ashes though without being weirded out.

I love the By and By urns, and that's what I'm going to do with the remainder of the ashes.

I want to be buried with their ashes as well.

This is so depressing :(

Even though we do own our house, we aren't planning on living here forever. I'd have a VERY hard time with burying/scattering the ashes because I want to always be able to "visit" with them.

We planted trees here in honor of each dog (native trees, white pines...Cookie got one too). If we still live here when they pass, their ashes or body will be buried under their tree. But I'd rather plant the trees now when they are alive so the tree is well established when needed...don't know how well I would handle it if we planted a tree for a dog who just passed and the tree failed to establish itself.

For a long time I planned to cremate and bring them with me...we seem to move so much...but I think we're a little more established now and I think I would rather make a hard photo album for each of their lives plus carry something small to remember them by...their memories will be with me until I am no longer me anyway and that is where they will really live. Their physical remains can return to being part of the earth, as will mine.
