So I've been mulling this over for a while... thought I would put the feelers out and see what people thought.
My sister has been doing some hand-stamped jewelry for over a year now. She made a really pretty necklace in memory of Happy. While looking for stamps, I found some really cute ones that I would kind of like... to put on tags for the dogs. Of course, they are kind of expensive to buy just to make some tags for my dogs, so that leads to the thought of "Well, maybe I could make tags for other people!"

I wouldn't really be intending to compete with Fetching Tags, who makes amazing stuff that is well worth the money; something cheaper, cute, customized, and if you, say, lost it in the lake, you wouldn't be totally crushed because it cost you $35! I would probably just be using pre-cut discs and shapes.

But then I think there's about a BAJILLION tag makers already out there. None that I have seen using the stamps I want, of course, but I'm just wondering if it would be a worthwhile investment or if it's a bad idea because it would be white noise? I don't make a ton out of my Etsy store right now but it certainly pays for itself, my webhosting, my domain names, and some other fun things. I'm not planning to get rich, but I also don't want to waste a bunch of time and have people just go "oh ANOTHER tag maker. Meh."

Any thoughts?

Yes. Do it. Rosey needs a new tag, since I had a change of cell phone number xD

ETA: I mean, yah, I know I could go and get a tag elsewhere, but I prefer to support Chazzers where I can :p

If you make them durable and legible, I'd be interested. I've tried a few tag companies that weren't Boomerang tags or Fetching tags and was not pleased. Despite having a lower price.

The durability question is definitely one I have too. I think I would have to do some research into finding a solution that is both affordable and durable...

I'm with Jess! I would rather support a chazzer than anyone else.. and I love the idea of cute hand-stamped tags at a lower price.

I've bought from 2 etsy shops.. A set for the cockers ages ago, and all three more recently. For how cheap many can be, I'm not sure you could be competitive.. but if you want it partially for you, you should go for it.

I love these.. got the cockers theirs, and got one for Arson later. 6 months and weathering well. https://www.etsy.com/transaction/83705283

These are more heavy duty.. Lasted well, but were kinda big on my kids. https://www.etsy.com/transaction/19132151 and https://www.etsy.com/transaction/19132150

Let me just say this, do you want to know how much I've spent over my lifetime so far on "maybe" home craft/profit ventures? Well, I actually don't even know! It has to be a few hundred at least (not counting the living wool sheep), but more so, you know how many of those "maybe" ventures has actually made me a profit? NONE!!! Yep, I'm a mad hopeless craft addict, regular jack of all trades, master of none. If you ask me?...

Just do it! Try it, have fun, love what you do.

And could you PLEASE make those tags that only have the name on the front and have info on the back?
I have looked EVERYWHERE and it seems NO-ONE makes them (except fetching tags)

I post a lot of pictures and would love for the internet to not know my phone number lol

I'm thinking aluminum is the way to go, it's light and durable and affordable. Aluminum is what Fetching Tags makes their tags from though of course they don't just use pre-made discs. $10-15 a tag is what I was thinking (depending on the tag) so pretty in line with what some of the other companies out there are making... just would be using some different stamps and probably be going after a different demographic. Of course, I started Dogged Illustration going after a different demographic and that didn't work out, so I suppose sometimes our customer base surprises us. =P

I looked into it last night and I'm looking at a few hundred bucks to start up... thinking of doing a Kickstarter to raise the fundage since everybody and their mom seems to love those? Hmmmmm...

Lucy's is that kind.

Looks like almost all her tags are that way :)
