Does anyone have Windows 8? Wow! I got this new lap top, my first lap top and I think I'm going to like it once I get use to this whole new, weird Windows 8. All along....for decades, Windows has had virtually the same kind of configuration...or how it works. This is so different, kind of like a phone or I pad. Sometimes I hate it and get frustrated, but then tell myself that it's just a matter of learning how it all works. What have you found if you're using Windows 8? I think it seems to be more logical and convenient...lots of very cool stuff IF a person can adapt to it. I am not that good with change in general and techy, I'm not. lol.

I love having my desk top in my den which is upstairs when I'm working on financial stuff or what not, plus it's got a very large monitor and a comfortable chair. But, having this lap top in my kitchen is very nice and convenient. When I'm cooking or working around downstairs, I can hop on here really easily and still keep an eye on what's on the stove. Or even sit on the couch with it. Usually, I just leave it on my long kitchen island bar thing.

So, what's your preference? :)

So, Windows has gone back to where it started? Trying to replicate Apple without getting hit with infringements? ;)

When I first got to switch over from Windows I found myself getting snarled up occasionally, then realized the problem was that I was so used to dealing with Windows for so many years that I was making things WAY too hard. As soon as I just used common sense it was a piece of cake.

Maybe Windows 8 is trying to make things a little more intuitive and less . . . Windows-y? But they have to avoid all those nasty little details like copyright violations?

Look on the bright side . . . at least it's not like Vista

I like my Vista. What things about Windows are not intuitive? Seems whenever I use a Mac it finds some way to **** me off and complicate my life.

I think a lot of it's what you get used to, although I NEVER got used to Windows. I kept my old DOS machines going as long as possible, which was a long time since the attorney I worked for had all his stuff on DOS machines and we had excellent computer gurus (they'd been working in computers since 1959  ) who kept things going. The only reason he went to Windows when he finally made the switch was because they were building Windows based machines and the early legal software wasn't readily available on the Apple. He'd gone the computer route long before most other attorneys as he'd been working with them for years already and held several patents for programs.

I really appreciate the Pages program. It is SO much better to work with -- for me -- than Word. I even like it better than my beloved Corel.

This isn't a Mac Vs Windows debate. We all know who takes their MacLove entirely too far.

Oh I'm sure it's what you're used to. I just wonder what specific things about Vista and Windows in general **** you off lol.

Like, last time I used a Mac I was feverishly trying to finish an essay (this probably belongs in the vent thread). By default the windows always seem to "float" on a Mac, I suppose because there isn't a taskbar that shows each window you have open. So I'm yanking all these windows around and accidentally shove my bibliography beneath the fancy opaque Mac taskbar, and now I can't pull it back up. "Send to top" or "focus here" or whatever the command doesn't work, because it's still behind the taskbar. I was ready to slaughter that computer. I think I ended up exiting Word and my bibliography either appeared with the save dialogue or I re-opened it.

ETA
AHEM back on topic I'm scared to try Windows 8 because of my experience with 7, it looks cool though. When I get a new computer I'll give it a shot.

Exactly this. It's very intuitive. Why would technology work backwards? ;)

Well, little by little, I think I'm getting onto it Skittle. My son got one too and he is way better at figuring this stuff than I am. He keeps saying that I just have to keep experimenting and reading those tutorials. He says it's like the Droid Incredible 4 G phone...one of the "baddest" phones....can do anything...they're striving for lots of multi tasking. So, if I discover anything earth shaking, I'll let you know too. Have you tried the voice recognition yet? There's a way to connect it to the TV/security system/phone...anything pretty much...all linked, all intuitive, all as one. If only I was as smart...:D

My preference is desktop DEFINITELY!! (she said posting from her nook tablet, rofl)

We have a couple tablets, a netbook, couple laptops, and a couple desktops (big busy family) and my preference always leans towards the desktop. The speed is the deciding factor for me.....nothing in this house comes close to the speed of my quad core HP.

Plus, laptop touch pads always annoy me, lol

As for operating system, my desktop has vista. The other dekstop here has windows 7.....I think kevin has 8 on his laptop. They are all ok to me...no real preference. I thought I hated vista when it first came out....turns out vista was fine, I just hated the slow a** dell it came with! LoL

There are several Windows based computers I wind up having to use and switch back and forth between Vista, 7, Pro and whatever it was before Vista. I really can't tell that much difference, but admittedly I don't do much beyond undoing whatever The Overlords have managed to screw up or pull up the net and just keep my hand in so I'm not lost if I wind up with a job where I have to use one again.

A lot of it really does have to be what you're used to and what you want to do on a computer. Since I just want to sit down and have the machine do what I want without having to go through a bunch of tutorials to learn it (not big on reading directions  ) Nikki and Mit enabling me to make the switch is something I'm forever grateful for. :)

Maybe, Dober, you're doing what I was doing when I switched, and expecting the new system to be more complicated than it is?

Wonder if there's any information on a site that will give you comparisons on what's different?

I haven't played much with Windows 8, but it does have a desktop like older versions of Windows. I don't really like Windows phones, so I'm not really sold on the whole live tiles thing, lol. You can get the normal Start Menu back and have it boot into the regular desktop, though.

I have Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro. I think Office 2011 is annoying, so I have Windows 7 installed just so I can boot into Windows and I can use Office 2010.

I played with 8 when it was still in beta, not much since. I understand what they are trying to do and one up Apple at the same time. Ubuntu Linux is trying to do the same thing, only they are farther ahead of both MS and Apple. One operating system across all platforms, mobile, desktop, and gaming. If 8 takes off we will see more touch screens on both desktop and laptop as well as more gaming friendly options for the OS with the XBox. The same experience across all devices. Same thing Apple is trying to do with OS and iOS.

My dislikes with the 8 on a desktop is its too touch centric, the beta allowed a registry trick to bring back the traditional Win desktop and start menu. I dont know if that is still there.

My other big dislike for Win8 is it is going walled garden the way OS and iOS have.

The Apple motto, steal great ideas.

With the countdown on XP being unsupported is it time for another OS poll?

Is Apple going to sue me for using OS, and iOS in this post?

ETA: Ubuntu is trying to use their OS on a TV platform as well.

My new computer has windows 8, and I'm slowly getting used to it. I'm sort of 'meh' about it. We'll see. It's not hard to use, it's just slightly different.
