So I took Snipe and Aeri to a nosework seminar with Andrew Ramsey today. We had a BLAST! His technique makes more sense to me than the one that the "official" canine nosework people use (it's based off of detection dog techniques) and both dogs made some nice progress, though Snipe rocked it the most. :D

I also learned that both UKC and AKC will be bringing in nosework programs in the near future, so that bodes very well for the future of the sport sans the really cliquish and expensive NACSW option that's available now.

Anyone else a nosework fan?

Mia and I are doing nosework classes right now. It's a lot of fun though I'm not seeing us trialing or anything in the future. Maybe if AKC takes it up and figures out a way to make it more inclusive for the little dogs. Mia loves it. We've been doing some hides in my living room and she's really good at it. I think it's kinda neat but not nearly as fun as agility. I like being more involved.

The UKC version does make it more accessible for small dogs - Ramsey specifically mentioned that because one of his dogs is a dachshund and he helped UKC design their program. :)

From what I learned today, they will have 5 levels (one below the current NACSW Level 1, three corresponding to current NACSW levels, and one above the current NACSW Level 3) and 5 scents as well.

Hellz yeah. Frodo and I took classes in PA, the class I want to be in here has a waiting list and is wowza expensive.

Nosework if Froman's calling in life, he is ridiculous at it. And it makes him happy like not much else does. Right now we are stuck practicing in my dinky apartment, but it's better than nothing. And it exercises the cat, who stalks Frodo while he searches :lol-sign:

I did an awesome seminar with John Rogerson a few years ago, in which we did some nosework type stuff. The sport was just being introduced, and he mentioned it at that time. My dog did really well at the nosework, so I was interested, but when the sport did show up, I felt it was too expensive and difficult to get into.

I'd be interested to see what happens with the major orgs.

I'm having the same problem with this as I was the Snipe one, it won't let me watch it for some reason :(

It brings your page up, but the part where the video is literally just stays black.

I can watch it when you embed it in the facebook thread though, so I watched it there :p

Question: Is he actually dropping something in the first box before every round? Or just pretending to? What is that business all about? lol

Pretending to - it's his routine to get the dog revved up *and* cue them to search and where to start all rolled into one.

Ahh, I see. Where is the sound coming from then? Is he hitting the top of the bucket with his hand?

Yea - he shakes the food tube, pops it under his arm, and smacks the first container as the cue to start - you can see it more clearly in Snipe's vid.

i think it depends on what you mean by 'good with people'. Shy dog or aggressive dog would make a difference. it certainly helps in any sport to have a confident dog. my classes, though, Mia rarely comes into contact with the other people but we're a little more lax with her than we would be with a reactive dog. And the dogs never come into contact with each other either. When one is out working, the others are crated.

On the flip side, I think that sports help with under confident dogs.
