We could take a direct hit here in PA from this storm that's on it's way. UGH.

I'm not too worried since we don't really have to worry about flooding being that we are at the top of a hill but it would really suck if we lose power for any extended period of time. I don't want to lose all that food in our chest freezer.

I also hope our big maple can hold out.

We could be in for a bit of a rough ride.

My parents live in Palm Beach County, and EVERYTHING is shut down today. Schools are closed, businesses are closing... even on the East Central Florida coast, schools are closed today.

Seeing as Maine just battled an earthquake... I'm saying bring it on Frankenstorm!!! We're going later today to pick up some essentials and moving stuff inside. Of course my mom is down in Florida getting ready to get on her cruise ship, the lucky ******* lol.

Eh, I'm expecting another Hurricane Irene scenario, although they're saying if it does touch down here then it's going to be much worse.

We'll stock up on emergency supplies, but I'm not getting too concerned. I doubt my house would flood, but a lot of friend's homes and businesses a couple of miles closer to the sound might. Hurricane Irene flooded one of our local bars (the yacht club) and knocked out some boats, and put quite a few trees into people's houses, so this could definitely cause some problems.

I'm actually NOT looking forward to this considering this is the anniversary of last year's really bad snow storm. Power out for multiple days, trees came down everywhere, it was chaos.

Then again I'm not convinced this is going to be all that bad.

My fridge is full of wine. I'll be fine.

I'm hoping that it knocks all the leaves off my trees (all 20-something of them) in one fell swoop so I only have to pay someone to clean up my yard once

I am going to put gas in the car though. It sucked during the derecho last summer to have no electricity (no air conditioning in 100+ degree heat!) and the gas stations were all shut down so we couldn't even get to the mall to sit in air conditioning!

Woah storm? Haven't heard about it. Is it expected to actually hit northern VA at all and when?

I'm hoping it knocks all th leaves off my tree and blows them into someone elses yard and then we won't have to clean them at all LOL

We've got lots of food and batteries and a couple huge water jugs to fill in advanced (in case the flooding makes the tap water undrinkable).

Mostly I hope if the power goes out it's not for too long. Our chest freezer is FULL and I may cry if I lose all that food lol. and if that maple tree gets destroyed I hope it doesn't hit the house but I'll be very sad to lose it because it's the best summer shade tree ever lol and it won't be easily replaced

I have a wedding to go to tomorrow (it's an outdoor wedding!) so I really hope that we don't get any rain. Ack.

Fran and Amber, you both have a good chance of being hit, although I doubt it's going to be as damaging there as it is here. Snowicane. Hurriblizzard. The End Of The World. Etc.

Sparks, is the tree healthy? I think for the most part the trees that come down up here during storms are starting to rot, or placed somewhere near a lot of erosion. If it's a big sturdy healthy tree it should be fine.

I was born and raised (until 10) in Miami, Florida. I've been in enough hurricanes (including 1992's Hurricane Andrew which was the second costliest Hurricane in US history behind only Katrina) to not fear them. In fact, I'll probably be having a two person Hurricane Party with cocktails like we did for last years "hurricane," which was actually a tropical storm. She did some real damage in the Caribbean, but Sally has since weakened to only a Cat 1 according to CBS. So, I'm just not worried.

That said, I am prepared, but I always am. I keep bottled water, canned goods and flashlights in my apartment any way, you always do when you grew up with real hurricanes. If you think I'm being blasé about it, just think about how you would react if the residents of Florida were freaking out about a snow storm that dumped all of 1" on them. Or just think how your California friends reacted when we all freaked out about the earthquake (which was disconcerting. I was 20 miles from the epicenter and really felt it. I mean, the earth is NOT supposed to move, it's supposed to be the one thing I can count on! Earthquakes aren't weather, though, they're some unnatural force that shouldn't exist... but I digress)

In any case, have a good hurricane! I'm more concerned about the ice and snow some have predicted, that combined with a hurricane(ish storm) won't be very fun at all.

The OH thought his brother was describing a new flavor of bubble gum when he told him that the "Tropical Hurricane is going to meet a Wintery Blizzard" for a flavor adventure in your MOUTH!!! Just remember folks, be prepared, but don't worry too much, the people telling you about the storm are also trying to sell papers.

The only reason we're getting water and food is because we have none. This is Maine, being out of power for multiple days is normal for us.

Yep! When I lived in Maine we were out of power for TWO WEEKS because of an ice storm (pretty sure it was in 1998 or 1999- it was considered a Big Deal). We had a couple of big generators since losing power was a normal thing during blizzards/ice storms.

Ooh! Super scary!! Did you know it was an earthquake right away? I thought it was a truck smashing into something and then idling outside (we had a truck hit our building two years ago so I'm scared of trucks now), but there was a part of my primitive brain that knew something else was going on. My step dad in Connecticut wrote me on FB telling me it was an earthquake!

I haven't had too many bad power outages, I think maybe because we're in the city. We have them all the time, but it's usually back pretty quickly.

I live in South Georgia, I think we are getting some rain/wind from it, but that is it.
But knowing this area, we probably won't get anything. We NEED rain and we all are praying that rain from this storm hits us.

I was in the shower when it happened. I thought either a) I was having a seizure, b) the furnace blew, or c) the house got hit by a truck. And then about died when I almost ran out of the bathroom in a too-small of a towel and just about flashed my brother. :rofl1: I love how everyone on FB thought it was the same thing, everyone running down into their basements or outside to see wtf just happened.

At least being in the city you'll probably get power back on before us if it does indeed going out. Bad thing about living in the sticks, especially without not owning a generator!

'98, probably. Probably the same ice storm we last had.
