Actually, if it hurts something is wrong...it should NOT hurt. If it hurts, get a LC to help, check the latch, check tongue tie, etc...it should not hurt.
We learned this at our birth class this past weekend. I'm thankful we have some great resources locally that support breast feeding so I know where to go and who to call if I need help now.

I agree that moral support and encouraging mothers is the best course of action but I've also seen where there comes a time where someone needs to hear "it's OK if you need to stop". Moms guilt themselves so badly that we sacrifice our own well being for something that's not going to be detrimental to our childrens well being in the long run. Mommy guilt is a powerful thing. I almost had myself in tears because I didn't send Hannah to gym class at the co op with a snack and I felt terrible even though she didn't even CARE lol. Sometimes you just need someone to say "hey, it's ok. We all mess up"

Each mothers breast feeding journey is different. I will always have to do both on the breast and pumping. Reason being is for some reason, with all 3 of my kids by 4 months I was drying up and they were losing weight. And it was not because of them not getting time to suck. My doctor never figured out the cause. So I always have to take meds that help keep my supply up and I always pump after each feeding to not just keep my supply up and increasing but also to be able to visually see if it starts to deplete. Plus it helps me to have an emergency stash in the freezer then if I do start to dry up so that I don't have to suppliment with formula.

Nico might have an issue with latching because of his cleft so I have already pumped 5 ounces that are in the freezer for when he is born. If he can't latch he can have that while I pump so he doesn't have to do formula or wait for the pumped milk. I am determined to breast feed till he is 2 or 3. But I can't do it on the breast after he gets his teeth in. Too much risk. So I will be exclusively pumping and bottle feeding at that point.

Each persons journey is different when it comes to breast feeding and no one should be made to feel guilty for the path that journey takes them on.

As far as breastfeeding - yes, maybe actually having the baby nurse shouldn't hurt - but I've never heard testimony of any breastfeeding mom who didn't have at some point painfully dry, cracked, chapped, etc. nipples from it or just incredibly sore boobs.

I didnt. There were times where i did get a bit chapped or dry but it was not painful, not really even sore.

I have never had any issues with breastfeeding, and nursed both of my children well past their first birthdays. I went 17 months with Devin and am currently nursing Coop still once a day at 16 months. He is going to wean any day now.

I think it really depends on the mother, the child and the support system you have. Some woman have low supply, others have a child with a bad latch, I always had oversupply issues which causes it's own set of issues. It can be easy to want to throw in the towel. I think by the time each of my kids were about 6 weeks old, I had a good groove going and knew we would make it.

Nursing has been one of my very favorite and very satisfiying bonding experiences with both of my children.

Well then apparently women in my family just suck at breastfeeding, because I heard A LOT of complaining about how painful and difficult it was.

For me the painful part was the milk letting down and the contractions they cause at the same time. I have little to no feeling in my nipples because of third degree burns when I was 8yrs old that destroyed the nerves. So even when they do dry out and such I don't feel it. Hence why I can't breast fed past the teething stage. It is too dangerous that I could get a cut and not know it and then get a serious infection. So once teething starts I have to strikely pump and bottle feed. I can't imagine the pain it must be to have them crack, bleed and other things I have heard moms say that are so painful

I always had a stong letdown as well as contractions in the beginning as well with nursing. I also had phantom movements for about 6 months with Devin where it felt like I had early stage pregnancy movements inside my belly.

I never had any cracking and bleeding, but I always use a lot of lanolin in the beginning when my nipples are getting toughened up still and also really dry my nipples off before putting them away. It was slightly more uncomfortable for me with Coop, but I used the APNO my dr prescribed and that did the trick. It should never be painful though, and if it is, there is most likely something else going on like bad latch, or cracks etc.

But again, each woman is different. We all have different tolerance levels for pain and different levels of milk supply, and different levels of tolerance for the amount our bodies can handle in producing the milk as well as sleep deprivation. Plus, nursing full time, especially for a mother working out of the home who has to pump, is a huge committment and the sacrifices you have to make sometimes may not be worth it to all woman. Some people aren't willing to put in the work. Some are, but just can't make enough milk etc. There are so many different angles to a successful nursing relationship.

In the end, all of our babies get fed and loved on one way or another and that is all that really matters in the big scheme of things. ;)

I've heard this a lot too. It's really important to me but I feel anxious about it. It's another reason I went with a midwife instead of an OB.

ok nothing big right now because we are still moving BUT I was wondering what others are doing or have done in their nurseries? We are building Savannahs now that we have a 4 bedroom house. Her room does not have a closet (suppossed to be a den/office) so she has a armoire, crib, excersaucer and other toys but no storage and no changing table.

Im trying to come up with ideas for both of those.

We don't know if we are having a boy or girl so we did a monkey theme! The room is a deep yellow with one wall brown and above the crib is this huge monkey on a vine that my sister and I did.

I'll have to show pics it turned out really good. :)

We dont have a nursery. Nico will be in our room for at least the first year. So our room has the bassinet right now, a dresser for him, the top of the largest dog crate converted into a change table, his shelves with all his accessories. We have his crib which will easilly fit where the Dog crates are now for when he is too big for the bassinet. The dog crates will then be moved to where our end tables are. We also have a very comfortable love seat in there for night feedings instead of a rocker. So no theme and no colors for the wall. We got everything used off of Kijiji to save money so though it is all boy stuff it is mismatched.

She still sleeps in our room but its nice to have somewhere to put her so I can still do my own stuff and to store her toys LOL. Its also connected to our room.
Shes got Morgans crib, got the rocking chair free off our FB page its a assemble and stain yourself deal, her playpen (current changing table), the Armoire I bought for 100 on clearance and it matches everything and her current toy organization was the other kids. LOL

Thanks! I love that one too.
Bev is getting a Cinderella one since hers is Princesses and Im thinking a quote from Cars for Morgan.
