My mother in law has decided to get Hannah (and us of course... Family gift lol) a kindle fire for Christmas

I have a kindle reader and love it but have no experience with a kindle fire. For Hannah it is going to be mostly books and educational and fun games and for us.. Everything else lol

Experiences?

My dad has one. We got him one for his birthday :)

he just plays games on it so can't really say anything on reading books on it. I still prefer the older Kindle for reading but it is a nice little ereader/tablet

I have one, but I couldnt leave well enough alone and rooted it and install a full Android ROM onto it. I like it much better as a full Android tablet.

As a reader and education tool it should be great.

ETA: for the ereader part I reversed the black and white, black background white letters.

I have a nook reader and I also have a nook tablet. Love them both more than I ever thought I would. I have my reasons for choosing nook over kindle....but honestly, I think kindle will be a great tool for miss Hannah :)

cool. Thanks for the input. Yeah it's mostly going to be Hannahs lol. I told my mother in law that I was thinking of getting her the LeapPad and she said "Well why don't I just buy her... and you... a real tablet" and I was like UH because they are crazy expensive and I would never ask you to do that LOL and she says "Well the kindle fire isn't that expensive and I think it would be great for Hannah to play her games on." hannah uses my phone for her games and such quite a bit so it will be nice to get my phone back and she can play with the kindle fire lol (seems crazy to be saying this about a 5 year old LOL but she's very responsible and careful with her things... she's been playing with my phone on her own since she was three lol)

and when she's not using it... I can use it :)

So they have a good selection of apps and stuff?

It does but a lot of the good stuff gets buried. I'd look online and find one you wanted before going into the store.

I have one. I use it a lot. Okay, so I play solitare so much in the evenings that it burns the image into the glass. LOL! But, I really keep it with me on the sofa so I can check email and facebook during commercials. I also like the TV listings app, because my TV is on antenna and I never know what is on.

Other than that, I use it to read books, obviously, I also have magazine subscriptions on it. I like not having paper magazine that I feel guilty about having to recycle. And I use a lot of other apps, too.

I'm very happy with mine. It is lacking a camera, so it's not like it could be an ipad substitute. I hear the new larger Kindle will have a camera, but it is only front facing for communication apps.

Anyway, I liked that it was priced at $199, but I never thought I'd use it so much. I also have a regular kindle and an iPod Touch 4G.

I do believe you can get the netflix app on kindle fire.

My nook tablet came with netflix (and we already have a netflix account) and it works AWESOME. Not a hiccup, bump, or shimmy. I signed into our netflix account while I was at barnes and noble to test out the stream (before I bought the tablet)........I had my doubts on how well it would run, LOL After seeing how well it streamed, I was sold and had her wrap it up! LOL

I have, and use, the netflix app on mine.

I even use it to watch movies in bed sometimes. No cable in my house.

Yep, you can use Netflix on it. Also you can buy/rent movies off amazon and watch on there as well (not sure if that was limited to Amazon Prime or not).

I was also really happy with the video quality on my Kindle. I really didn't expect it would be so good.

Any Amazon movies. It really is set up to make Amazon video purchases very easy, of course. ;)

hahaha im not much of a share-er i dont even share my phone (an iPhone) with my SO (he has his own smartphone, but insists mine's 'better' & always wants to use it) i never let kids play with my electronics, but i have my reasons for that as well.

i have been entertaining the fact of getting a kindle or nook e reader & wonder how do you get the books on there, you have to buy them right? how does that work? do you have to have a credit card or something?

Ya, I didn't expect it on the nook either, LOL That's the biggest reason I went to B&N in person instead of ordering online.

I mean I love my regular nook for reading.....e-ink truly is the next best thing to an actual page, but streaming movies and stuff online is a whole different thing and I had to see it to believe.

I really was one of those people who said NEVER to e-readers........said I loved the smell of a new book way too much to go digital and now I can't imagine giving up my nook! LOL (still love to smell my 'real' books tho :D)

Also, I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to talk down about Kindle, it was a tough choice for me between nook/kindle. I think whatever e-reader you've decided suits your needs is the one you should get, but that's the way I feel about most anything :)

Dogdragoness, we (indiana) have a digital library. My 'regular' library card number works online as well to download books from the digital media center. The book is good for 2 weeks (just like regular library books) then it expires.......no need to return, and no late feels! LOL

Bet your state has a digital library too! Most do by now I think :)

yeah I probably wouldn't let most kids touch my phone and certainly not get them a tablet lol but Hannah is very responsible and trustworthy. I don't think she's ever even broken a toy before and heaven forbid she accidently ripped a page in a book, you'd think she committed the worlds worst felony LOL. She takes very good care of her toys, her clothes, my phone, everything. In fact the only person who has ever broken my phone was my Mother In Law LOL (by accident of course haha)

but in the end... I'm not even buying it lol and it wouldn't be mine to share lol. she's buying it for Hannah so Hannah will be sharing with me LOL.

Hannah likes to play a lot of learning games and it will be nice for her to be able to play them on a bigger screen

@A cooper Oh i didnt think of a digital library or whatever!! thats awesome! so thats how it works!!!! i might ask for one of those for xmas! what about the internet tablet thing part, how does that work? i might not do it that way because i have the iPhone & the laptop, so i dont really neeed it to function as a tablet... but i am curious as to how it works. I love the smell of "new book" too :D i also love the "smell" of a book store, sad its a dying thing to see an actual book store, & i imagine the invention of amazon.com & e readers will kill them off completely much like blockbuster .com, DVD kiosks, & netflicks did to the video store.

thats awesome you have such a caring, gentle child, i wish more parents instilled that in their kids, i was like that because we werent rich when i was growing up... we werent POOR, but my parents certianly didnt have the money to go out & replace a toy everytime i broke it, nor would they, & when i was young i broke a few, & i had to learn the hard way that once you break something, its broken & too bad. which is why i think im so careful with my things (phone... etc) & who uses them. esp if they are gifts.
