Spent last weekend at the UBSDA National (UKC Belgian Shepherd National) and had a great time! Most of my pictures are from the Regional Specialty because once the actual show started I was crazy busy. Whim was entered in Breed, Working Sweeps and 8 Agility runs. She got second to Cherry in conformation, her AG2 title, all 1sts and 2nds in agility and some UATCH points. Cherry got some agility Qs and placements and did really well in conformation, winning every class she was entered in and some Reserves. Savvy also went and showed in the all-breed show held at the same time as the Belgian National and in agility...his first ever trial! He got two competition wins towards his UKC Ch and two AG1 legs and a Total Dog Award! My friend's dog Dante finished his AG1 title and did very well in breed, winning best in Elder Sweeps and the Champion class at the Regional. A very successful but extremely tiring show :)

Here's the first batch of pictures, I will add as I get more edited.

Whim waiting her turn...

Dante during assisted animation...this shows the process pretty well. One person holds the dog, the other baits them teases them with toys, calls their name - whatever it takes to get them to pull into the leash and "use" their body. The judge wants to see the dog looking "up", alert and how they stand on their own. You can see the judge here and the judge's scribe, who writes down the judge's comments on the critique form. Belgians are judged like this at every UKC show that is offered for them, always by breeder judges.

Dante

Waiting during Terv judging. The assisted animation takes time, so there is a lot of waiting around in the ring.

Mals Gone Wild...these are Stan's brothers

Roust...or rather Roust's teeth while he amuses himself outside the ring

Yay! I love Belgian pictures. Looks like there were lots of beautiful dogs there! Someday I must get me my own hairy Belgian.

AAAAHHHH Belgian puppies! AHHHH Belgians in general! Ahhhhh!

Dante looks really handsome. He's so hairy!

The picture of Roust makes me laugh really hard. Something about the contrast between all the adults looking dignified in the ring, and Roust rolling around, eating his leash. He's like, "Ain't got no papers, no good behavior for me!!!" *noms on leash*

I showed the pic of Austin to my husband first. "Stan doesn't stand nicely like that." Showed him the one with both boys and he said it looks more familiar.

Stan is 22 inches. He needs to grow at least two more inches before I can show him and expect to even get a glance. I've got a feeling that he's not going to make it.

Both of the brothers look so much more mature than Stan. He still looks very puppyish.

Eeek, too much pointy awesomeness! Love Stan's brothers. Some very nice looking Mal boys.

Also glad Roust can self entertain LOL. Are his sister's coming around at all in foster?

He is very hairy but super low maintenance. He always looks like he does in these pictures and his owner is not real into grooming LOL He had a bath and was blow dried at some point before the show but otherwise, he was sprayed with water and brushed before going into the ring. He never really blows coat to where he gets naked, doesn't tend to get matted and his coat is naturally floofy, straight (no waves to groom out) and really black. Jagger has a very similar coat but his tends to be slightly wavy along his back. I sure appreciate proper Belgian coats!

LOL yep! Someone from agility class asked if Roust was in the puppy show and I'm like..."no and that's not really Roust's thing". Let's see Rousty...you have to be examined by a stranger, you have to stop biting the leash, you have trot beside me at a slow pace...again...stop biting the leash. And ummm...your ears have to stand up for real, not just when you hear something interesting. Your ears and Savvy's match more often than not. You are not a Pyrshep.

Yes he is ummm...easily amused LOL

His sisters are doing great, improving every day. They just need to be spayed and they can start going to fosters.

That gray Terv is stunning! Is that a common color in Tervs?
It's less common than the warmer colors but not really uncommon. It is considered a fault in AKC: "Body rich fawn to russet mahogany with black overlay is ideal and preferred. Predominate color that is pale, washed out, cream or gray is a fault." http://www.akc.org/breeds/belgian_tervuren/index.cfm

And in FCI: "Tervueren: Only fawn with black overlay or grey with black overlay, with black mask; however, the fawn with black overlay is still preferred. The fawn must be rich, neither light nor washed-out. Any dog whose coat colour is anything but fawn with black overlay or does not match the desired intensity of colour cannot be considered an elite specimen." http://users.skynet.be/bs138047/belgium_shepherd_dog_fci_standar.htm

But not in UKC: "Body - "Fawn and Sable (all the gamut of colors through beige to gray), with charcoaling. The coat is characteristically double pigmented, wherein the tip of each hair is blackened. On mature males, this darkening is especially pronounced on the shoulders, back and rib section. The under parts of the body, tail and coulottes are cream, gray or light beige." http://www.ukcdogs.com/Web.nsf/Breeds/HerdingDog/BelgianShepherdDog07012009

Or CKC (although they can't be "too light"): "The dog should be either rich fawn to russet mahogany or distinctly grey, each with a black overlay. The coat is characteristically double pigmented, wherein the tip of each hair is blackened. On mature males, this blackening is especially pronounced on the shoulders, back, and rib section. The chest colour is a mixture of black and grey. The face has a black mask and the ears are mostly black. The underparts of the dog, tail, and breeches are light beige or grey. A small white patch is permitted on the chest but should not extend into the neck or breast. Frost on the chin or muzzle is normal. Too light a colour or too black a colour is a serious fault. This variety is known as the TERVUREN." http://www.ckc.ca/en/Default.aspx?tabid=99&BreedCode=BLS

Regardless of the standards, many people really love the Grays :)

LOL That picture made me laugh. They showed well but definitely were really exuberant.

The standard says he needs another inch to be showable and I think it's not unlikely he will get that. But if a 23" male is finishable somewhat depends on where you are. Here, we have so few Mals showing and there is such a huge variation that I don't think the size issue would hurt his chances as long as he was 23" or more. In an area that is more competitive in the breed, if you are up against other males that are noticeably bigger it could be a problem. But then, that can sometimes be a problem if you have a 24" male and everyone else showing has 26" males. That was an issue with Jagger for sure.

I had planned to be there with my Laekenois, but on Saturday I was out of town, and Sunday recouperating. I always like to meet the other Laekenois there and I know a ton of Belgian people.

I live in the same area and there are 2 Terv breeders that I know that seem to always have some grays. Oh, and they are both in the area, also.

But then, that can sometimes be a problem if you have a 24" male and everyone else showing has 26" males.
That's too bad. In our AKC Dutch Shepherd judging guide we made sure to put in a comment that height should be no consideration as long as it is within the breed standard (+- 1 inch). The DS is supposed to be small enough for the (human) shepherd to carry it. I supposed most judges don't really have the details memorized.
