French Bulldog

I am a long long ways from getting another dog....

But there have been a few these come through my work lately, and I am so totally smitten!

There such funny little dogs, with such awesome little personalities!!

Can anyone tell me more about them has anyone experienced one on a more than 10 minute basis?

I'm really interested to hear responses because I, too have been smitten with them! I think I'll def. have one someday. Love their size, coat, and squishable faces!

I don't know any personally, but my brother loves them so I frequently look through rescue sites and read their profiles and it seems like a lot of the rescue ones have DA issues. Not sure if that's normal in the breed or if it's just one of the more typical complications of poor breeding in the breed.

I was talking to breeders.. I was looking at adding one in the next 6 months or so, but then Arson fell into my lap..

Good number of health issues. As with any brachycephalic breed there are anesthetic concerns.. to the point where I'd be picking vets carefully, wanting one with brachycephalic breed experience and knowledge.

They can be DA. No way to predict it.. More so they seem to be food guardy. Many breeders I spoke to have entire packs that get along just fine, but at food or treat time fights can break out. Breeders like to point out they are bulldogs, just in small bodies.. they can be stubborn. The breed itself is not considered DA the way JRTs often are. It's individuals.

Ack. I still really want one. But it's hard adapting to having three. Four isn't happening.

I've got Addie

I love her to pieces, but for multiple reasons I don't know that I'll have another.
She is my love bug, attached to me like crazy. Not SA but just devotion. She is super athletic and agile she LOVES to run and jump, I'd love to try her in agility. She is tough, nothing bothers her.

But, she IS a bulldog as others have said. She's stubborn as all get out. This has been a recent development, but she is highly possessive of me with other dogs. She will spend a weekend with my friend and her dog and be a little angel, but as soon as I'm involved she is territorial and will start a fight over my lap. She is reactive when she's kenneled or on a leash with other dogs. She has been trained, but she has to try very very hard to listen to me and not start spinning and pulling or hitting the kennel...

Her skin. Oh her skin. She is literally allergic to herself, and right now we're dealing with MRSA. She has had countless staph infections all over her entire body throughout her life. This will be a lifelong thing I somehow manage...

Also, she cannot stand the heat. Living in Texas that's a huge issue for us, I joke and say we go into summer hibernation. Anything over 80 she just can't get enough air, and her nares and palate are pretty good for a Frenchie.

She's definitely a trip, but I love that little piggy! Let me know if you have more specific questions, I could talk about them for hours!

All I have to add to this thread is that the noise they make sounds like someone slaughtering a pig. LOL Seriously. Course, that can be said about a lot of brachy breeds, but a Frenchie scream is like no other.

They're also insanely cute, funny, athletic, and awesome from my experiences.

Really? Lol I have never heard Addie scream. She will snort and snore and huff like no other but she rarely ever barks much less screams hah

Cresteds. They wail, and SCREAM.. oh my lord.. You can hear Arson in his crate from outside he house. The crested forum people some claim they gave up on crate training as neighbours thought they were beating their dog.

Laura, I know 4 all are wonderful dogs and all do very well in agility. One of them is my student, check out Saba on my fb pics. She does agility, disc, dock diving etc, I keep warning her owner that I am going to steal her one day. And I have never seen an ounce of DA, she has been playing with Who since Who was a pup.

I've seen Saba compete at Spot On actually Really enjoyed watching her. Also had some good conversations with Megan Rice about the breed. Sadly, I can't get one for a good while now though.. Arson is a handful..

I met a handful in the US last year, some happily played as packs in front of me no issues. I wouldn't call them a DA breed.. just that some individuals could be, though more commonly it's often over food that fights occur rather than individual dogs fighting to fight.

Though I am years away from another dog, I am rather intrigued as well because I do spend a LOT of time with our friends bulldog, and the idea of a smaller, more athletic version of him intrigues me...

Saba is an awesome little dog, lol I don't dare even look at her when they are training or she comes flying to me. So it is a very strict no eye contact or smile from me when she is working Outside of the ring, it is a different story can love on her as much as I want lol.

I walk a few frenchies. Sweet, fun, funny, dogs who love people and other dogs alike. I've loved them all.
If you can deal with the snorting.. haha

some are more active then others. It might depend on the breeder/lines.. I know a few who are very well built and can run and breathe pretty well.
but the smaller more compact ones I guess with the much flatter faces (I don't know how to describe it really) have some trouble when it comes to exercise.

Even on our short 40 minute walks on cool days we have a few frenchies who need to sit and rest and take breaks from play so they can breathe and relax.

ALL have been obsessed with food and very cuddly/friendly with people. They are extremely popular city dogs.
