I had super short shifts before I got into the vet tech thing. But depends on the money you need too because obviously you're not going to make much if you only work a couple hours. My pizza place job had me only working 3-4 hour shifts (just the busy dinner rush) and my kennel assistant job is mostly 2-3 hour shifts, with 5-6 hours on Saturdays. But those hours were only suitable while I was in school. Had to get a second job to supplement the kenneling income once I finished school.

Personally, I wish I could work some more long days, and get a couple days off. I'm not even working FT hours right now but I only get every other weekend off, it's just irritating knowing that I have to go into work every day, even if it's only for 3 hours.

Good shoes are amazing. I used to buy the $30 shoes, think I was doing myself a huge favor...and then I discovered why someone can legitately charge $80-$120/pair for shoes. OMG, the comfort! The durability!
Yeah I was ready to cry when I paid $75 (I think) for my current pair of shoes. And the sucky part is, you don't even know if they're going to be a good pair of shoes until you start wearing them... so I was afraid they were going to be a waste of money. But these shoes are definitely way more worth the money than my $20 Payless shoes were.

My standard work day is 11 hours, but that extends if there are a ton of boarders or an emergency comes in ten minutes before closing. We do get 1 1/2 hour lunch which is awesome and 90% of the time I use it for a nap, but there are plenty of times we're entirely too busy for anyone to take a lunch, so the boss orders it in and we scarf our food down on the clock. No sitting except for the data entry portion which is minimal or when I cover for one of the receptionists. I actually prefer the standing, sitting at a desk for 11 hours is absolute torture >.<

With classes now, most days I work 5 hours in the morning and then school, or school in the morning and 6 hours afterwards. It sucks because it means less hours, but school has to happen if I'm ever going to finish this second Bachelor's degree.

Our newest employee was hired 8 months ago. Last month she worked her first 11-hour shift and I swear I thought I'd never hear the end of it, how awful it was, why she had to do it TWICE in a month, etc. Ugh, GET OVER IT. We hired her to work, but it seems to be the last thing on her mind. She's supposed to work on Tuesdays so I can have half a day off for homework and such, but she's not capable of it yet and nobody trusts her enough, so I go into work right after class.

There have been days where I have stuff for 14-16+ hours a day with the only break being driving from place to place. Work, school, training, volunteering, or all of the above. You do what you have to do.

Yep. Shoes really do make the difference. Especially if you are flat footed, like my DH.

On another note relating to the thread, I'm seriously backed up on commissions. I have one that I took 6 months ago and I haven't finished it yet. Why? Because I have to do it from scratch, I have NO direction from the person who hired me, and my muse is completely shot. And this is even one of the freebies I handed out to get business going. And I guess it isn't terrible. Scratch work usually takes other people around 4-6 months. But still. I'm used to pumping this sort of thing out in 2 weeks or less.

Sigh. I'm screwing myself here. I love doing artwork, but I don't think I can do this for a living.
Oy. I'm in this boat right now, exacerbated by the fact that I've been having to deal with my parents' health issues, several eye surgeries for both of them, one entire week having to drive Miss Crazy back and forth to Knoxville after taking Dad to the ER there for his heart, constantly being harangued, my mother forgetting crap, losing crap, etc., and in total denial (she's a medical miracle, the only human on the planet ever to have a series of brain ischemia and still have completely perfect recall of everything that has ever happened -- whether she was present or not -- and omniscience for everything that ever will happen) and blaming it on me. And then there's all the lying, the snide remarks, the jabs and screaming . . .

Thanks to the stress I'm having to fight with the myasthenia (and likely blood pressure shooting up), which means my vision when I'm focusing on one thing for more than a few moments gets wonkered, which is how I managed to dremel my fingertips. And my hands shake. Oh, and the weird visual antics make me a little nauseous. And nearly every time I sit down to work . . . I get called to come do something for them, or take her someplace, or why did I not do something she thought she told me I was supposed to do for her (but she never mentioned) or just "where are you?" or she starts bitching about everyone and everything and how she's miserable and it's everyone else's fault . . . The woman never lets up. :wall:

I've burned up at least a couple hundred dollars of metals, had to replace a kiln element (I think lightning ran in on it one night while I had a load in being sintered), then burned up a few more while getting it recalibrated . . .

And I feel like a total sh1t for being so far behind on everyone's work :(

My parents just came home from my grandfather's place - they were on the phone with someone else who was at his side when I was gearing up for the nightly walk; headed out the door and just got back home 20 minutes ago.

Mom was very upset and yelled something about her cooking dinner and it not being eaten(?) then left to her room. My dad wasn't in a great mood himself but explained that they got a call from her brother who was visiting granddad at home; granddad was upset and asking to see our whole family: both my parents and my brother and myself. I had left just two minutes before this 'request' was made and my brother was out cold napping for some kind of online gaming tournament running on Asian real-time. So they went on their own, Apparently granddad didn't even notice the fact that me and my bro weren't present - he just kept rambling on. He could NOT stop talking - the words just kept spewing out and he seemed like he didn't have control over what he was saying/how he was saying it. I hope he will be alright and is able to resolve his conflicts.

This.is.all.VERY.frustrating. I am saving my pennies to be able to move out - the tension in this house is getting thicker by the minute.

I also don't understand working in retail and not expecting to have to work more than a five hour shift. I regularly work nine or ten hours shifts. My schedule is set and I work two nine hour shifts and one ten hour shift, with my other two being six hours. *shrug*

Anyways, on topic I FINALLY set up a phone plan in my name, waited not so patiently for my new iphone to get here and it's defective. No external sounds work unless you have headphones plugged in...so it doesn't ring, I can't use it for an alarm, it doesn't play music, and I can't use speakerphone. I have to call AT&T tomorrow and see about just returning it and paying the extra money to get the 4s.

Dixies mom, I'm not going tO lecture you and "welcome to adult life" you to death. This is your first job right? It is perfectly normal to struggle the way you are. Looking for a new job is a good idea but in the meantime get yourself a GOOD pair of work shoes. They will be priceless to you. And FYI, there are tons of fast food and retail jobs that have less than 8 hour shifts although that would mean part time vs full time. When I worked at burger kig and tim hortons we had regular shifts where people came in fOr four hour shifts to cover busy periods (like breakfast to lunch) and the majority of afternoon evening shifts were 4-6 hours. Mostly high school kids worked those shifts from after school to close. So honestly I don't know where everyone gets the idea that it's 8 hour shifts or nothing.

Hang in there, get yourself a good pair of shoes and i promise you will build up endurance and be able to handle being on your feet overtime :).

When rescues only advertise on Facebook or are very rude to people and wonder why they never get dogs adopted out.

Dixie's mom, barring any particular health/disability issues, most jobs you are going to find ARE going to require you to do a lot of physical activity. I work overnights at walmart and for the first couple months, that job wiped me the hell out. I was expecting overnight stocking to be like what daytime stocking was - people taking little packages of things, opening them up, and putting them on the shelves. At night, it's taking entire trucks worth of merchandise, unloading it, stacking it up on pallets, hauling the pallets out, moving the boxes into carts and then putting it on the shelves. Oh and they turn the air conditioner off at night and close all the doors. It was miserable and I was sooooo disappointed in my job, but there was absolutely nothing I could do considering there's nowhere else to work around here, and I was out of money in a new state.

After a week of working that job I would come home exhausted and in so much pain I literally couldn't stand it, and I'd just lay down and cry for hours until my sleeping pill kicked in and I could sleep it off. I wanted to quit because it felt like I was dying slowly. Even today, I just got off work and I'm pretty sore after working 5 9-hour days in a row, but it's 100% better than it was a couple months ago. It totally gets better.

It sucks, being an adult sucks, working when you don't want to sucks, but it's all part of life and if you stick it out, you'll definitely see that it gets better and you get used to it. I don't mean to step on your vent, I know it's a vent thread, but seriously - be thankful for your job and be thankful that your boss is giving you more hours. Some people have to fight the opposite problem, like I did for months, not being able to live here with my boyfriend because neither of us could find work.

Great post :)

Definitely get yourself a GOOD pair of shoes (go to a shoe store, tell them what you're looking for, and have them fit you/test out shoes on you).

I worked at Publix (grocery store) in high school as a cashier part time. I generally worked 3 days a week- 6-7 hours on 2 days, and then an 8-9 hour day on Sundays. Standing on concrete for long periods of time is tough, but it gets better!

When I started working, I had the cutest pink pair of Pumas that I insisted on wearing... and then realized that functionality is more important. I went to Nike and bought comfortable shoes, which was a lifesaver!

Think of it like this: the more hours you work, the faster you'll be able to save up money to move into a place with your sister! You'll have money for singing lessons and traveling to do shows. And working longer hours DOES get better, I promise!

Since I can't quote everyone from my phone I'll try to answer the questions, but I may miss someone.

As for working 5hrs a day, I applied for part time because I have other things I have to do. For one I am starting school soon, I also take music classes during the week, and I have responsibilities at home. But yes a latge part of it is the strain that it puts on my back and feet. I am waiting for my first paycheck to buy new shoes. I bought new shoes for the job and they are not working out. Anyway, I would have understood if my employer had told me that 5hr shifts would not work out. I would have said "thank you very much but that is all I can do" and I would have quit. However she said that would be absolutely no problem, and was glad I asked her before just quitting because other employees were quitting without ever asking for accommodations. I don't know where you people work who are saying you can't get 4-5 hr shifts. I have an interview on Thurs for a job with 3hr shifts and people that I work with at my current job work 4hr shifts with no problems from the managers. It's definitely not unheard of, and for a first job (which is what this is for me) doesn't sound unreasonable to me. 5hrs 6 days a week is 30hrs. Part time is 25-30hrs.

I honestly do have a vent. Tony and I have a lot of "mutual friends" and out of all of them, maybe one of them will actually talk to me when he's not around. Makes me feel like utter worthless ****.

Same thing goes for his mom lately. She wants absolutely nothing to do with me and I have no idea what I did wrong.

Also, let me say. This is a rant/venting thread. And I have mentioned repeatedly that I appreciate the efforts on my managers part. They've been extremely nice and accommodating to me. I'm not lazy, I'm a good worker. I work hard and I go above and beyond my actual job description. I go out of my way to be extremely flexible about the hours I work (as in morning afternoon or evening shifts). I appreciate this job. Especially in a time when they are hard to come by. But that doesn't change the fact that I was told 5hr shifts would be no problem and now they are becoming a problem. I'm well aware that retail is not for me. I have been working 8 and 9 hour shifts intermittently since I started this job. I hesitated to even ask for less hours but it was either that or have to quit the job. It's still that way. I'm lucky enough that I don't need this job to live. I live at home and I need money to continue taking the music lessons that will hopefully help me in my career someday, but I can afford to quit my job if I have to. I'm not going to come home crying every night of I don't have to. And if I'm unable to get the hours I need, then I'll quit. But I'm doing everything I can to keep this job.

Yes, but I was being really picky. All the jobs that have been available have been retail jobs which is where I'm working now. I've been trying for a long time to find a job where I wouldn't have to be on my feet all day, because I physically can't be on my feet for long periods (I have back problems and I'm overweight which doesn't help me out). But I haven't been able to find anything so I said "screw it" and got the first retail job I applied for.

Personally, I'd rather do three 8 hour shifts rather than five 5 hour shifts. That means you have more days off. After getting dressed and driving to work, I'd want to make it worth my while.

I had a friend in college (who wasn't IN school at the time) who wanted a desk job working 10-2pm everyday. She was truely surprised that she couldn't find one.

Have you looked into working at a grocery store, Lauren? When I worked at Publix, they were really flexible with their hours. A lot of the baggers would do 3 hour shifts.

My back hurts worse this morning.

Also I hate change, and while a whole bunch of exiting new things are starting in my life, and that's great, a whole bunch of new things are starting in my life, and that's terrible.

I'm having trouble adjusting to our new roommate (who is a lovely, lovely person), and I think it's more because she came in at a time when I'm going through the most stressful summer of my life.

I need hugs from my boyfriend, but he just wants to talk about 'what's bothering me.' And that's not helping.

Ergh.

Getting ready to leave to go back to MI at the end of the month. Since May, we have been living in a 14' pop up camper at my work, which is a campground. We pay the same site fee as huge RV's. Fine, whatever, I don't care.

Josh talked to my boss about moving into a lodge if we sold our camper before we left. Boss said it was fine, the same hours would cover the lodge. Awesome. Now, we actually have it sold and it is due to be taken away on Saturday. Now boss says they may give me another day to work to pay off the lodge. I'm so tempted to just leave early. But, if we stay until the end of the month, that is another paycheck for Josh, which could really help us get on our feet back in MI. This place has done nothing but screw me the eff over.

Ugh. Why can't people just stick to what they say?

If I recall correctly you've been refusing to see a medical doctor or chiropractor for the issues you have. Honestly the only way you'll convince an employer you have an actual medical issue barring you from working a normal shift is with a legitimate doctors note. If you want your short shifts then I advise you to seek medical care for your issues and get documented proof to pass on to your employer.

I think you have this vision of what a job is, and it's just not realistic. Its a job, not a career. Big difference. Plus, you're the new person. You will get the shifts others don't want.
