What do you do if a dog gets hit by a car?

Exactly what the title says. Not your dog, obviously...

Rage & I were out for our morning run, and on our way back to the house on the main road (4 lanes of traffic) happened across a fat little white poodle, dead towards the side of the road. I kept going for a few paces & thought "well, if it was my dog, I would hope someone would have the kindness to move her off the road..." so I went back, and dragged her off the road onto the grass. It was then I noticed she had a collar, so I unsnapped it & pulled it off... no tags :( we left then because I couldn't really think of anything else to do. It wasn't a dog I recognized from our neighborhood.

That's a thought... I think they're closed til Tuesday but if she's still there on our evening run I'll grab it & take it to animal services - thanks!

I will typically put out a flier to the effect of "dog found deceased" with the color of the collar and any identifying markings about the dog. Sorry you had to come across her...what a shame :(

Sometimes people post on craigslist about dogs and cats they see hit on the side of the road. At least if someone is looking on CL for their lost pet, they hopefully will see your post.

I'd move it off the road and check for tags - if there was info I'd go on that. If there were no tags/info I'd craigslist it or call animal control to pick it up if the ads were of no avail.

Ditto the craigslist idea... post where you found her and the description of the collar... somebody might be looking for her. Super sad. =<

People around here constantly just let their dogs roam free. Drives me insane for people to just throw their dogs outside and let them roam, and then wonder why they pick them off the side of the road dead.

I commute about 30 miles to college everyday and take a state highway to school. Everyday I saw a beautiful rottweiler standing on the side of the road. 2 weeks later I see it laying in the middle of the highway with the owners parked off to the side waiting on cars to pass so they could pick it up.

So sad, but infuriating at the same time.

So sad to see. :(

I found a dead GSD on the road last year. I stopped and got out, and made sure it was really dead (and it was). No collar that I saw. I called AC and let them know, they hadn't heard yet. I guess that's all you can do. :(
