Am I the only person...

That can't wait for my puppy to *not* be a puppy anymore?

On one hand I love being a puppy owner/companion - the training, molding, learning, shaping, and whole experience is very rewarding and great.

But on the other - I DON'T enjoy the insolence, immaturity, bounciness (can get incredibly annoying), and lack of composure. I know, I know...lots of folks dogs still have all that and more well into their later years - but I'm just saying. Puppies are...great yet nerve wracking at the same time.

Katalin just isn't behaving this month - the August heat, her heat, and her period of pre teen flakiness/insolence is just a f*cking horrible combo. She does things she knows she's going to get in trouble for then tries to guilt trip me when I put her into time outs/give her a correction for it - totally PMSing - it is completely untypical of her. Grrrrr....we shall get thru this.

I'm in the opposite state of mind now! My girls just turned two and suddenly toys are not nearly as appealing, sleeping is the preferred way to pass time and other dogs are meant for sitting watching, not playing with

Luckily my one girl Trin, will always be something of a goof ball I think. Robyn is fast heading into elegant lady territory.

I love puppies

I'm like you... I don't like puppies at all. Oh they're cute... in other people's houses lol.

I'll go for an adult dog next time. The only puppy I might consider is if I ever find a good breeder of newfies, because they're not as wild as puppies.

Well he's not a puppy anymore but when he was I could not wait for him to grow up. A couple of weeks ago he had some weird regression where he went back to being unable to self occupy and settle down, and his noise reactivity was through the roof again (thankfully it only lasted a couple of days). He was pacing and whining and panting and chasing the cats and in his pacing walking all over us and panting in our faces. It was miserable, that is what every moment of his puppyhood was like, he just would not settle down, HAD to be occupied or he'd go after one of the cats or steal and destroy something. I never ever want that back lol. Self control is a wonderful thing, and his isn't even that great now, but compared to when he was a puppy it's wonderful.


And I didn't see the benefits either. There was no molding the puppy going on, I didn't see that little spongy mind everyone talks about. It took everything we had just to try and remedy/control his bad behaviors. The biting, the stealing, the cat chasing/harassing, the aggression, the potty training, the barking. He is much easier to train as an adult, he can focus now.

Jack was a good puppy but an asshole as a adolescent...

Elsie will be 2 in October, and she's becoming wonderful. I love the dog she's turning into.

I'm not huge on puppies.

Quke has been one of the easiest puppies I have ever had, still cant wait for him to mature a bit more

Kharma and Buffy were never really "puppy." Shiva was some, but only compared to the other two Filas (but I've always suspected Shiva was part Bull Mastiff) so I got spared the worst of the crazies.

When Kharma hit adolescence though . . . :wall: Oh, she went through the "I don't have to listen to you" bit full tilt, along with the "what is your problem; why are you so bent out of shape" attitude There were even times when she ignored what Bimmer told her -- rarely, lol. He wasn't lax about enforcing, and he could catch her to do it, lol.

Gotta admit I did enjoy the puppy zoomies, but Kharma still does that sometimes

Um yeah JunoPuppy made me absolutely miserable and I couldn't wait for her to be an adult. That was a long 18 months.

However, it does not change the fact that I still want another puppy.

I love puppies. But I do not like adolescents. Once they hit about 8-10 months old I really, really want them to just hurry up and grow and get a brain back. I especially wished that for the Dobermans.

Dance never went through a real puppy stage. She was incredibly good and trouble free for a puppy. She's 5 years old now and behaved the same way then as she does now. In fact, I think she's brattier as an adult than she was as a puppy, haha. The only reason during her puppyhood that I wanted her to grow up was basically because I wanted to see what she'd look like as an adult. But I enjoyed her puppyhood very much and as much as I wanted her to grow, I also wanted her to stay a puppy forever.

I want a baby Mal boy so bad. Doesn't help that I keep having puppy dreams and our clicker trainer lady said last night, "Gee its too bad you don't have a pup for the upcoming puppy class!" LOL

Though seeing how the GSD girl we train with has darkened up (she's red sable) and is starting to fill out a little now that she's two is making me yearn for an asshat GSD baby boy a little bit so I could enjoy the bizarre color changes and have an awesome sable trifecta. There must be something wrong with me to want a gator or sharkie baby so bad, haha.

Yoshi is 7 and she's lost her crazy puppy tendencies. She's still freaking smart and super active but she's ready at the end of the day to cuddle. I LOVE how she is right now because she can go go go all day still but can appreciate a cuddle day when all I want to do is play on the computer or read.

But at the same time I'm sad my pup is all grown up :'(

I love puppies, love the naughty teenage phase as well. Hell all five range from 18 months to 8 years and they all bounce around, "yell" at me, and are crazy mischievous miscreants. BUT, that could be because I somewhat award for it lol.

I love puppies and I miss having a puppy. Raising Mia was... an experience. Compared to a lot of dogs I see, Mia is still very puppy in behavior at age 3. She's still very wiggly and bouncy-happy. Still loves her tennis balls and full of energy. But she's matured a lot these days and while I appreciate it sometimes- like when I was sick and did nothing for days and she was fine- sometimes I miss that little ball of crazy she used to be.

Summer is 8 now and just lazy as can be. Wonderful, sweet girl. But lazy.

Yes, you're the only one!!! Lol. But I seriously wish Fozzie was a puppy again. All of the health issues, grumpiness and lowered activity/playfulness make me sad. Of course while he was a puppy I wanted to strangle him at times. The grass is always greener!

I may be a freak but I am a huge fan of the 6-9 month old range, actually. Squash is the only dog I've ever gotten younger than that and I never really thought of myself as a puppy person.

Having said that, I loved his wee puppyhood. And hated it. I hated house training and the constant supervision that went with it SO MUCH but in my defense he was a bit of a challenge to house train. In retrospect, I do miss wee Squash, though. I would do it again, god help me.

Menchi was such a sweet little jellybean. She was one of the easiest puppies ever.

Watson was a sweet puppy boy...but a really hardheaded teen.

I really do not mind all the work

Yes. I love my dogs as puppies/adolescents but I ADORE them as adult dogs. I love going all gooey over puppies and getting puppy cuddles and helping friends out with socialisation etc, but I love to go home to my lovely adult girls. They are far from perfect or boring and they keep me on my toes, but I just love the feeling that we know each other so well...

I had some issues with Missy Ab during adolescence, truth be told, discovering her reactivity and trying to come to terms with it and work through it. A bit of an emotional time and it still can be hard, but we are at a good place now in terms of our relationship. Grace was always an 'easier' dog, even when she went through her destructive adolescent stage.

Honestly, if the right adult came along I'd skip the whole puppy thing. But I wouldn't rule out a puppy in the future either because I would like to raise another at some stage. My next dog? No idea at this stage. We'll see.
