I just got put on a waiting list for one. Everything I've read about them makes them sound like they will fit into my lifestyle perfectly. Plus, the breeder is wonderful and fairly well known from what I hear. I'm hopefully going in the next month or so to meet their dogs.

So, tell me all you know about them! :)

Who is your breeder?

My person opinion, Ibizan Hounds are amazing, I will never be without one!

They are funny, happy go lucky dogs, the really love their people or person. Courtney is a very one person dog, she is obsessed with me. They are smart dogs, and even thought alot of breeders and owners don't do obedience with them, I personally think these dogs can do extremely well with obedience, agility and rally.

They can jump very high heights, so a very secure fence is extremely important. I just had an Ibizan Hound friend lose one of her very precious hounds due to the dog getting out of the fence and getting hit by a car :( They are very very active as puppies, and can get up onto just about anything and everything that you do not want them too lol! So be prepared to walk into the kitchen and having your hound on the kitchen counter, all 4 feet lol!

They have extreme prey drive, they are very fast, so offleash in secure areas is a must and start training your recall from the very beginning! My girl has a really great recall, and we do allow her offleash, but only in certain areas where i know that if something were to pop up she would be easier to catch and not be at risk to traffic ect. They kill things, be very ready for this. On a weekly bases Courtney kills small game and brings it to me, typically squirrels and rabbits. Due to her high amount of prey drive she is not small dog, animal and esp cat safe, so something to possibly prepare yourself for if you have a high driven hound. I know of alot of ppl that have them with cats and small dogs and don't have a problem, but just something to be aware of.

They are a "softer" breed of dog. They do not due well with harsh training or in a household where people yell alot or that have children that scream alot.

What coat type are you getting? We are on the waiting list for our wire boy, who will hopefully be born this year !

Thanks for the info! Yes, I plan on having chain link fencing in the whole property (3ish acres), not sure how tall yet, at least 6 ft. I want to do conformation events, as well as agility, rally, lure coursing, pretty much whatever the dog excels at and has fun in. I am expecting a lot of work training wise, and its actually one of the reasons why I chose this breed. I seem to bond better with dogs that are more aloof. I have a Carolina dog mix that is my heart dog, and I think the reason we are so close is because 1. She was a rescue, returned 3 times to the shelter before she was 9 months, and 2. because before she will listen to anything you have to ask, you have to earn her respect (and even then, it can be iffy lol). My lab is a doof. He will obey anyone who he thinks has food or something to throw (I have a video somewhere of my 2 year old nephew telling him commands, its adorable) The breeder is Alfheim in Washington. They are about 45 minutes away from me. I am hoping for a wire-hair, but I'm getting a female :) I think I want a standard Irish marked one, but there are a couple pied dogs I've fallen for. However, as long as everything else is just right then as long as its a girl I'll be happy :)

Yes I am planning on having a 6ft chain link fence installed around the property.

And their mischievousness is one of the reasons I want one lol. I love a dog that is a challenge. My first dog it has taken me almost 5 years to get her to where she doesn't eat things (read: mattresses and couches) when we leave and doesn't act like an idiot in public (mostly) She is my heart dog, but she will always be a work in progress. My other dog is a total doof. He would sell me out for a cookie, or a tennis ball, or love, pretty much anything (typical lab lol) He was so easy, I got him at 8 weeks but its like he came pre-trained, and he still picks up on new commands faster than any other dog I've trained. He's great, and I adore him, but I have a soft spot for the trouble makers :p The breeder is Alfheim in Washington state. I'm hoping for a wirehaired, irish female, although there are a few pieds that I really like :)

Ugh. I wrote two replies, not sure what's going on... The breeder is Alfheim, I'll respond to the rest once I stop needing Mod approval
They are very good breeders, alot of their dogs have Gryphon lines, which are very good lines :) Depending on which dogs they breed your dog will be related to my girl and to my future pup :)

How cool! I just fell in love with the looks of their dogs, plus they feed raw and are less than an hour away from me! lol My favorite female of theirs is Dragonfly, and LOVE the little female pup Ramona (out of Dragonfly, by Dudley)

I like that breeder's line a lot. I have an Ibizan as well though he isn't 100% pure. I know TONS of Ibizan people same as Momto8.

In my honest opinion, they are so well suited to me. My boss is a trainer and sees people that are not matched well with their dogs ALL the time. I "rescued" a wire Ibizan hound from someone off Craigslist to help out the Ibizan Hound rescue, but ended up deciding to keep him. When my boss met him and saw how he and I interact with each other she said, "that's your dog Amber." She doesn't ever say that to ANYONE lol.

I was on a waiting list for a 2013 litter for a purebred Ibizan and from a smooth litter, but this wire boy just stole my heart.

Dragonfly is very nice! So is Ramona! I think my favorite of theirs is Harriet :)

I'm getting a puppy from Hera this year, my breeder bred in the spring, but sadly the litter did not take, so we changed up studs and are trying again!

I love that your breeder is right in my neighborhood. I still need to plan a dog playdate with her at some point.

Alfheim has FANTASTIC dogs!!!! I'm so jealous, one of my best friends got a puppy from their last litter and I am GOING TO STEAL HIM.

The beezy goodness.

He's so good with babies. When my son is crawling across the floor he commando crawls behind him and hi-fives the soles of his feet. :rofl1:

If you get one from them, you'll definitely get your wire coat. That's all they work with. :p

Momto8, they have some nice looking dogs as well! That sucks that the breeding didn't take, fingers crossed for this new stud! :)

Romy- He is a cutie! I swear, the more Beezers I see the more I love them!

**Note to self, don't take beezer puppies to Oly, Romy will steal them :p**

Random, possibly stupid question lol.

You have to hand strip the wire coated ones correct?
I know of ppl that have done it, most people do not recommend it for showing at all, the judges would rather see the dogs in their normal coat. you do trim them up a bit, but not actual stripping.

How hardy are they? My two play pretty rough sometimes, and I know they are built a lot thicker then a Beezer. Also, we get pretty cold winters sometimes, will they need a coat of some kind when they are outside? And from what I've read they are pretty dog/people friendly, but can be sort of aloof with strangers. To what extent are they aloof? I have a cat, do you think if raised with a variety of animals and given a good outlet for their prey drive they will be ok with them? I ask because my Carolina dog is the WORST when it comes to chasing/killing squirrels and birds, but is totally reliable when left with baby kittens/ferrets/etc. She has excepted them as "pack members" of sorts. Granted, it took a LOT of training, but the result was well worth it.
