I always leave the tags on until I'm actually going to wear the article of clothing. It's mostly just in case I change my mind and decide I don't like what I bought. I guess I'm also worried that I'll take off the tag and then find a hole or a rip, and then it would be too late to return it.

So... do you remove tags right away? Leave them on until you actually wear the clothing? Take the tags off to wash the clothing before wearing? Leave the tags on to return the clothing after wearing it? Do tell!

Poll to come!

I hate to shop for clothes...too long, I'm short...too tight, I don't need to be showing anything off...too bare, ditto. But if I find the perfect something or other I might even pay for it, take the tags off, and wear it home

I only take tags off before wearing the item. This just happened yesterday, went to put on a new t-shirt that I bought 2 weeks ago and it was too big. Luckily the tags were still on it and I was able to return it!

Same here! I even leave stuff in the bag from the store until I'm sure I'm going to keep it...

Ditto on the washing before I wear it! So yes, I take the tags off right away 'cause it goes to the laundry room when it comes home :)

Once I make my mind up at the store, I never return anything to the store unless it's faulty. So while I keep my reciepts, I don't bother with tags.

I generally wash everything before wearing it, except for things that need to be drycleaned. I have a ton of dresses that are dryclean only (ugh) so I wear those before washing them.

I usually leave tags on until I'm absolutely positive I like it and am going to keep it. Then I wash...usually. There have been times where I didn't wash them first. I know you're suppose to. There's something potentially dangerous about not washing them first. I forget what it is though.:rofl1:

There isn't a choice that fits me in the poll. I don't rip tags off at all. I cut them off carefully. And I don't necessarily wait until I'm going to wear the item. Sometimes yes, but sometimes I just take them off because I'm sure I'm going to wear it some time, so I might as well wash and have it ready. But only when I'm sure I'm keeping it.:p

Good Morning America tested a bunch of clothes a couple of years ago:

To see how clean some "new" clothes were, "GMA" bought everything from blouses to pants to underwear from three popular chain clothing stores ranging from high- to low-end and handed them over to Dr. Philip Tierno, director of microbiology and immunology at New York University, to test the 14 items for germs.

Tierno found disturbing results. There was flora, or bacteria, on several items.

"On this black and tan blouse we found representation of respiratory secretions, skin flora, and some fecal flora," Tierno said.

On a jacket, Tierno discovered evidence of feces, skin flora and respiratory secretions, especially in the armpit and "close to the buttocks," Tierno said.

The biggest surprise came when Tierno tested a silk blouse.

There, he said, he found vaginal organisms, yeast and more fecal germs.

Other people's cooties? :lol-sign: J/K

I do remember an episode of House where kids purchased designer jeans from some shady guy and wore them without laundering. Of course the jeans turned out to be contaminated with pesticides or something crazy.

Actually, some clothes ARE treated with a final coat of chemicals to make them hold the color (dye) better, so it's a good idea to wash them at least once before wearing.

Also, when I was younger I bought this awesome indigo blouse, wore it without washing, got home and BAM.......my upper body was INDIGO! LOL, the dye had rubbed off on me all day long and it took forever in the shower to get it off! hahaha

LESSON LEARNED!

EDIT: I was posting at the same time Jessie.........I was just joking about the 'cooties' but obviously I shouldn't have been!

This is the main reason why I wash things first- I have sensitive skin, and I don't want any type of reaction from the chemicals that are sprayed on clothes.

I used to like a couple of stores where the clothes are sprayed with perfume or cologne every 30 minutes. When I bought clothes from there, they went straight into the washer before they stunk up my house!

I take tags off right before I wear them - because more often than not, I don't like how they fit or look when I'm at the house even though I tried them on at the store. lol

I leave new clothes in the bag with tags on until I try them on again at home to make sure I really want them, as I have to wash things before I wear them. It sucks to have taken tags off, washed something, and then decide it doesn't fit properly and now you have no way to return it.

Okay, that does it. I'm never not going to wash new clothes first again. That's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo disgusting!!!!!:yikes:

Coop! Yes, that's it! That's what I now remember hearing about....chemicals and who knows what, especially that they're from Timbuktoo...nobody knows what they use on these things.

And I saw that episode of House. That was mighty freaky! It really could happen.

Now the question is: Does washing them reeeeeeeelly get all the cooties, chemicals and pesticides out? What about some creepy parasite that could be living in the fibers? Ewwwwww!

Anyhow, I don't remember ever washing new clothes until more recently. And lookie here! I'm still alive and kicking. (and pretty old) Must have a good immune system or something. :p

Umm....sometimes I'll even wear something out the first time (just like, for a walk around the block or a quick trip to cvs) with the tags, just to make sure I reallllly like it.

Yeah, I'm bad.
