I was just thinking....this morning it's very dark out, rainy and thunder/lightening storms coming in and out of the area. I normally hate electric light during the day unless I really need it for something I have to see well, like Dremeling nails, cooking or something. Otherwise, normally I just like the natural light from outside. In fact, electric light when you can have natural light kind of annoys me. My daughter feels depressed on these dark days and always wants lots of electric lights on. I don't get that way much. But today, it is particularly dark outside and I've succumbed to turning on my kitchen lights...they're the recessed kind. It just seems to need some brightening up, cheeriness or something, plus I can't see much, it's really quite dark. It's kind of cool...phenomenal today though. :D

When I drive around, I often see people with lamps on in the middle of the day and can't figure out why. LOL. So, do you try to get by with just the natural light or are you apt to want electric lights on and how dark or dreary outside does it have to be for you to decide on electric lights?

I just have natural light most of the time.

If it's hot enough to have the AC on in the evening, that means the curtains have to be closed, so I turn on a lamp, though.

Nope. I prefer natural light when at all possible! It drives me right up the wall to walk into one of my kids bedrooms or the family room and see they have the shade drawn and the dang light on! ARGH!

It's not really about money to me personally, natural light looks and feels better to my eyes, but that's the excuse I give the kids, LOL........"One day when you have to pay the bills, you'll be thankful for the sun lighting the house during the day!" hahaha

Screw light! I hate light.

- when I'm home alone/in my room, the curtains are closed and it's pitch black. Well, not pitch black since I normally have the Tv on. I can't stand lights being on or natural sun light coming in. If I feel I need light, I'll turn a lamp on as I like keeping my curtains closed because I like knowing no one can see in.

I prefer natural light during the day. I rarely have electric lights on during the day and into the evening, I mostly only use them at night when it gets too dark to see. But if I'm home alone at night, it's not uncommon to find the whole house dark with only the light of the tv.

If I have electric lights on during the day it makes me feel icky. I guess it reminds me of cold winter mornings and dreary rainy days when we have to use them. It's just an all over icky feeling.

That's what I tell Emily when she comes over and it's only a little cloudy outside, so the house really isn't that dark. She turns on all kinds of lights. And I turn them off. She whines about how "depressing" it is and I tell her, "well then, you pay the bill." LOL. Most of the lights are those energy saving kind anyhow. But yeah, I prefer natural daylight and I have all my blinds open most of the time except at night.

LOL. Now, this would depress me. I don't have claustrophobia, but I'd probably develop it if I couldn't see out the windows. Plus, I love looking at all my pretty flower gardens. I keep my blinds open until it gets dark outside. I couldn't care less if someone can see in. They hardly can anyhow, but maybe a little. It just doesn't bother me. Different strokes for different folks, huh. :p

It's pretty dark and dreary over here, too. Not sure if it will clear up later in the afternoon or not.

I like days like this every once in a while. The natural light is soft, I prefer yellowy lights on days like this. I don't mind some lamps or overhead lights on, but I like keeping the darkness in the house too. Lazy day comfy laying in bed snuggling kind of day.

Not all the time, though. Constant cloudy or rainy weather is depressing.

Exactly, different strokes for different people! Nothing wrong with how people liking their house lit up. I do get a bit of light in my room, it's never pitch black (sadly) because of my curtains but it's dark enough. When in the house, it defiantly isn't dark enough! Not enough curtains on the windows, lol.

-I will say, there are some days I wish there was more light in my room but I get over it pretty quick. I can see why you like having a window open, gardens are pretty! I don't have on here though. Well.. I hang around in my room in my undies/singlet so I feel comfortable knowing no one can see in though I'm sure no one could see in anyway.

Lyzelle, I like days like this every now and then too. I think our weather system from the coast moves north east usually. When I lived in north Idaho, the weather in Seattle would arrive the next day in Idaho. LOL. So, I think it moves in a big swirl from the coast over your way.

I like to take advantage of the rainy day sometimes for things. Like today, it was time to fertilize my back lawn, so I ran out and did it quickly...just takes a minute. And I don't have to run sprinklers right afterward if it rains enough. So, that's a plus for me.

And then...like you say, it's kind of neat being inside all lazy and looking out at the stormy weather. Sometimes the lamp light can be nice on days like this where it's particularly dark. But I don't get to be lazy today....gotta run to Walmart or Home Depot (yet again....been there almost every day lately) to get more grass fertilizer. I ran out and I need to do the front yard on Sunday. (every two weeks) Dang-it! I was just at Lowes yesterday!

Tahlz, LOL. I can see why you don't want people looking in at you. Where I use to live for 10 years up until last year, in north Idaho, I lived in quite a wilderness area and had 5 acres, lots of woods around me. No one, but no one could see me and I could have sunbathed out in my yard naked if I had wanted to. I did like the feeling of privacy and wondered how I'd adjust to this 180 degree difference, moving to the suburbs here. But I was pleasantly surprised that it doesn't bother me at all. Of course, the way the houses are situated, it's not too bad that way. The front yard though, is wide open for anyone to see. So yeah...I can relate to your enjoying your privacy. I liked that too.

Oh God, I LOVE light. Bright lights. Dim lighting really depresses me. Like, makes me want to tear up. I always have the lights on unless I am napping or wanting my kid to nap. I can't even imagine using only natural light during the day. I have never considered it. I do take full advantage of it, opening curtains and blinds, along WITH the artificial light. In the living room right now I have natural light plus the overhead light and two lamps going on right now. I just never really though about not using them.

I actually hate darkness. To a point that I don't think it normal. I was telling hubby a couple days ago that I wish it was daylight all the time. Scary stuff usually happens at night or in darkness. I honestly wish it never had to get dark out.

You sound JUST like my husband  He hates having any lights on at any point during the day and the blinds up NEVER. But that I think more has to do with the fact he likes to walk around the house is well.... very little.

I have to have it dim or only have natural light for my eye problems so the artificial lights hardly ever get used here.

I never have lights on in the house during the day unless it's a dark and dreary day... like today lol. Today I had to turn the light on early in the afternoon because it was just too dark.

Actually that's not entirely true. I always like to have the light in the overhead of the stove on. I don't know what it is about it but having that little light on over the stove makes it feel warm and homey lol

Natural light here if i have to have to have it on, but most of the time all the lights are off and curtains are closed, esp in this heat!

If it's dark enough, yes. But generally no. I prefer not to turn the lights on until I actually have to.

Me too Sparks. I love that little light over the stove at night. And I have a couple of rather dim lamps with very old lampshades with cool pictures on them on my end tables in the family room. There is just a low kind of orangy glow...not very bright. But that's what I like in the night when I'm watching TV. It's cozy. Or the little piano light on top of my piano. That makes kind of a nice light. So, those plus the light over the stove which is visible from the family room is about all I use at night. I hate over head lights or too bright from artificial lights, but love bright sunlight coming in. Go figure. lol

Natural light when at all possible, but I have no problem with bright, functional, artificial lights.

That is one reason I HATE my boyfriend's apartment - it has three windows, all of which barely let in any amount of natural sunlight. It can be high noon and I'll need a lamp on to see what I'm doing - and all of the lights in his apartment are DIM. I'd be putting 60-75 watt bulbs in everything. LOL I can flip on every single light and still not have enough light to suit me. But then, I also read a lot. If I'm watching TV or on the computer I don't mind dimness as much, but for reading...you need light. The only time I like dim lights is first thing in the morning when I wake up and right before bed.

(I also HATE light when I am trying to sleep. Like, if there is a light shining under the crack of my door or something I can not fall asleep. So I like it bright when I'm awake, dim when I'm getting ready for bed or first waking up, and pitch black when I'm asleep.)
