I'm merely curious to what people have to say about this.

Does anyones dog pant at night, when it's cold?

It's cold here because it's Winter. Some nights I've woken up to Sunny panting heavily, wide awake, head up, laying there. I normally have water down but I've forgotten lately, he wouldn't always drink on some of the nights I woke up. I did let him outside just before, I'm guessing he had a drink, not sure, he strolled back in when he was ready.

He does sleep under the blanket, not sure if that matters.

Any idea why a dog may pant through the middle of the night, while it's cold out? It's cold in my room. I'm out in the shed.. So, it's not hot at all being Winter.

I looked up this because Neccy does it too. One site I saw said to look for other signs of Alzheimer disease. I will say she sometimes seems to have moments of confusion but it is still too sporadic to point a finger any one direction. I also want to have her thyroid checked to see if she has hyper version. She doesn't have any other signs of that either so I am not sure.
That is all I have found out so far.

If the dog is under the blanket, it does get quite warm. On occasion Gavroche will pant too, so then I just open up the blanket and give him room to breathe for a bit.

It could be the blanket, it certainly can get hot under there, especially when you have a fur coat on too. In the winter if Tucker is laying
in the window (the back of our couch is up against a window so he can sit back there and look out) he'll suddenly get up and start panting as if he just came back from a long walk, then he'll lay on the hard floor until he's cooled down and he'll do it again. The sun gets to him.

The only other things I can think of are anxiety, though that would likely be sort of noticeable he might also pace, be unable to settle, look around frantically. That and medical conditions, I think heart problems can cause breathing troubles and I'm sure there are other illnesses that can do that too.

This is what came to my mind. I'd have him checked out by a vet to make sure there's nothing medical going on. Then don't give him a blanket, make sure he has water and see what happens. If he's not hot and he's panting, I'd look for some other reasons; stress, nervousness about something or a medical condition. I hope he's okay and it's nothing.

Yoshi pants if it gets about 73ish degrees in my room. Usually it means I need to put the fan on her or she has to go to the bathroom.

It sounds like Yoshi is too hot.

Talz...Is this panting only at night? If it's not other times during the day, it's probably not a heart problem. You'd likely see it more during exertion. Is that something you notice?

She usually is. I have to have the AC set under 70 for her to be comfortable most of the time.

The problem is she's so furry and she wants to be touching all night and that kind of overrides her want for comfort.

So I usually set at about 70 and aim a fan at her and she's fine. If I forget the AC she does wake me up -.-

Sophie pants from nerves I believe, we keep the bedroom glacier cold with my hot flashes, plus she's got buzz cut length fur, so she definitely isn't too warm. If it's raining or thunder or even one of the neighbor dogs barking late night...she'll sit and pant and drool, eventually just falls asleep

I wake up with Neccy panting. She is in the recliner next to the couch I sleep on. Victor is not panting, Pepper is not panting and I am not the least bit hot. The ac is on, an Neccy has her fan on top of it. She is not covered up. It passes, and a few hours later this will repeat. Not every night that I know of, but it might because I don't always wake up. She is elderly, and has had 8 months of recovering from gross neglect. It could be anything, but her coat is good, and she seems to have come a long ways toward being healthier than she ever has in her life. I don't believe it is diet. So after reading the article I watched her even closer and there does seem to be moments when she looks off and seems to not remember where the water bowl is, or which side of the building she now lives. She use to live on the other side. I use the pressure points that the holistic vet showed me to help release heat from her body, she is very much a "hot" dog, it worked for my old dog Mary so it's worth a try.

I had a dog that was a hot dog as well and could only tolerate a blanket for a few minutes before he had to get down and sleep on the cool floor, even in the winter. This that Neccy is doing is very different. I do want to have her thyroid checked because it seems to come in surges for lack of a better word. Once it is over it is over, and reminds me of a hot flash.
