Simi has been out of heat for aprox. 3 weeks now, and she still has swollen mammary glands and there seems to be some slime from her vulva. She's had the swollen mammary glands since she was in heat, but we only just now noticed the slime... Besides that I can't see anything else strange about her. Still eating, drinking, etc., all normal... just a little swollen and leaking grodies.

Anyone with experience with false pregnancies have any insight?

I would start taking her temp and watching for pyo if she's got any sort of discharge. Your vet might want to put her on antibiotics just in case. Nothing to mess around and wait and see on.

It could just be that but if it's the first stage of pyo you want to act now.

Normal dog temps are around 101*F - and yes with any discharge after a heat cycle I'd be doing a vet check just in case.

She's at 101.0 *F.

ETA: I guess I should add that Crash did "breed" her while she was in heat. He wasn't showing any interest in her at all, and he's neutered and has been for more than a year, and then he just took interest in her and wam-bam-thankyou-m'am. They weren't locked long, but a site I'm looking at says vaginal discharge could be caused by trauma?

Crash is so frustrating. We just got rid of out intact male when Amanda moved out with Morrie, so we were all "yeah, no need to crate and rotate on heat cycles!" Then there's Crash, who thinks he's still a man and has to do the deed.

It shouldn't cause that much of a problem - if she was a willing partner and there was damage, it would have been within a week or so. But it could have introduced bacteria. Dirty boys.

Watch for lack of eating and drinking a lot of water, those are the usual signs. Learned the hard way not to use neighbors that aren't dog wise and are also unwilling to pick up the phone and ask about that sort of thing. Came home to 'oh she's not eating but figured it was hot and she was full of water, she's been drinking buckets and buckets of water - she's still in heat right, there's a bit of discharge'.....

Dog was normally a garbage can who would eat herself sick, no dog should be drinking 2-3 ice cream buckets of water a day, and the bit of discharge was not 'a bit' by any means. Emergency spay the next morning (she was still willing to much on some people food so the vet said to fast her and bring her in the morning) - you know it's bad when the tech is waiting and an IV is started before you have the paperwork handed to you.... she was fine but it was a long week.

She's still eating, drinking, playing all normal. Normal bathroom habits. She's working in training better than she has been, actually.

Mom noticed the discharge shortly after she'd pee'd, so I'm wondering if that had something to do with it. Besides the discharge, what could be the cause of her swelling? There's no fluid or anything coming from her mammary glands, just swollen... I was thinking it was left over from her heat.

Discharge in my intact bitch would be a handbreak turn into my vets parking lot.

Both Aeri and Snipe had some mammary development that lasted for a few weeks. False pregnancy is very common so that's what I chalked it up to. False pregnancy can last up to the normal gestation length in dogs, so the first two months after heat are where you'll be apt to see symptoms.

I hope it's nothing but I would be concerned too. I read online (recently I was knee-jerk concerned about Sloan) that you'll see abdominal swelling as well...

There's no abdominal swelling and the discharge isn't consistent... Doing some more research. Having a tricky time convincing Mom to let me take her to the vet to be checked, and since Mom's my main source of income right now, I'm pretty much up **** creek without a paddle without her help.

A breeder I was recently in contact with had a bitch come down with pyo. For all intents and purposes, she thought the breeding had been successful and she was just showing signs of pregnancy. It wasn't until she went in for an ultrasound to check on puppies that they realized she had pyo.

If anything, just taking her into the vet for a general exam wouldn't hurt, and it shouldn't be out too much money. Then if the vet thinks further testing is warranted, you can decide that then.

Is the discharge clear? Based on what you've posted so far, I'd say chances are pretty good that she's going through a normal false pregnancy since she has no other alarming symptoms.

It's ... straw coloured, I guess. Though it's more like there are sometimes strae coloured ...gobs, for lack of a better word, where as other times there's some more runny like discharge that's clearish.

That's what I've been wondering, too. But Simi doesn't really lick herself, either, and I've seen the sort of gobs before now on and off and never paid any special attention to it (I swear I'm not a perv, she just flops over onto her back a lot!). The swelling in her mammary glands seems to be going down, though...

If the discharge has color I'd be concerned. Of course, the second of my two emergencies thus far this weekend (I'm on call) was a pyo surgery (closed, though, so no discharge) so I'm probably extra cautious.

Sounds like an infection of some sort?
That's kind my thought... That it could be vaginal infection (as opposed to pyo).

While it's possible for a bitch get pyo on her first heat, it's pretty unusual. It's far more common in older, never-bred females. My coworker has a Frenchie bitch that gets a vaginal infection after EVERY heat, likely just because when she's all swollen up, bacteria gets in there and... there you go. A round of antibiotics clears it up no problem. I would definitely go to the vet, though, if possible.

You have my sympathy, though. The other morning I hallucinated that Keeva has some discharge and she's about 6 weeks out from the end of her heat, so I was like, NOOOOOOOO. I don't know what I thought I saw while I was half asleep but there's definitely nothing coming out that end of her, LOL.

Ahhh the joys of owning an intact bitch. And I mean bitch. Enzo was unbearable when she was in heat. Had her spayed at two though. :p
