We had Mindy with us and stopped for a quick bite to eat....

Parked in full shade, windows down couple inches, truck was cozy, the interior temp on the gauge was 19!!! Mindy was not panting at ALL or in any distress.... I checked on her once in the half hour we were there all fine....

Here are pictures of the truck where it was parked and Mindy inside before I opened a door...

Someone called the cops on us!!!!

Sigh.... We had to wait, fill out reports and so on....

I will say the officer was irritated...

I won't repeat what I said to the "self proclaimed AR" woman who called!!! It can't be repeated here!

ETA Sorry can a mod change pissed if it's not ok in the title? Still kinda wound... And can't edit the title on tapatalk

This is what terrifies me about having the dogs out with us. If we ever have to run in somewhere and leave the dogs in the car for a minute somewhere were we know they will be fine I'm worried someone is going to call the cops.

People seem OBSESSED with it (along with dogs walking on pavement) this summer and I really don't want to deal with cops when my perfectly fine dog is in the car for 10 minutes in the shade on a normal summer day.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this but I'm glad nothing came of it! Did the women apologize or maintain her saving the dog stance?

Yeah, it really, really drives me insane how stupidly quick draw people are about dogs in cars this summer. I put a big FB status about it the other day. I am now paranoid about even taking my dogs out and about for fear I run into 7/11 for a moment, leave it running, and risk an idiot breaking in.

At least they didn't break your window... Sucks. :/ did the officer say you were at fault?

The officer was apologetic and irritated with the caller, who maintained her "saving the dogs" stance....

You know, I hate that people are behaving this way, the cops ate going to get tired of it fast.... And when a dog truly needs help it will be like the boy who cried Wolf....

If they'd broke the Window god help them, my hubby would have lost it...

People just do not think, simple as that. They have the general rule (do not leave a dog in a hot car) but it's as if they don't understand how it works. As in, the dog actually has to be hot enough to cause it distress. To them it's just:

"DOG + CAR= ABUSE DEATH CRUELTY OUTRAGE REQUIRES IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION"

but it isn't very hot out and the dog is in the shade and the windows are open...

"DOG + CAR= ABUSE DEATH CRUELTY OUTRAGE REQUIRES IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION"

but the dog isn't panting, is not showing any distress

"DOG + CAR= ABUSE DEATH CRUELTY OUTRAGE REQUIRES IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION"

Yes people must err on the side of caution and be vigilant but the hysterics are universally annoying and imo disappointing lol

That blows! People are so dumb!

Someone broke the window of a friend's car because they saw crates in the back. Best part is that the crates were empty.

It would suck to be a cop this summer.

Did they know who did it and did they have to pay? Because that's ridiculous I'm pretty sure 'saving the dog from heat' requires there to be a dog.

This sort of thing drive me crazy. It really does. Someone was just telling me about how a woman left their dog in the car in the parking lot of Walmart a few days ago when it was so hot. And people took the dog out and called the cops and how can people be so irresponsible? Then I find out, this happened before 8am in the morning. No way it was too hot for the dog to be in the car so early with the windows done. People have gotten totally stupid over the car thing. And now the hot pavement thing too...

I had the cops called on me a years ago for running into a store for like 5 minutes with the windows almost all the way down. I had a puppy (Cherry) with me in a crate and an adult dog seat belted in the back. Cherry apparently started shrieking because she didn't want to be in a crate which drew attention to them. I'm pretty sure one of the store employees called the cops on me. I had to take the dogs out so the cop could determine if they were in distress and the store employee that I think called came out with a bowl of water for them...which they weren't remotely interested in. The cop lectured me about leaving dogs in a "hot car" (which wasn't the case) but had to admit that they did not appear to be in distress.

Dude. It's ridiculous. Awhile back, my boyfriend had to run into CVS and I sat in the car with my dog - engine off, windows down. My dog was panting heavily because she had just been exercised at the park. I had a woman walk up, pointing her finger at me, telling me I shouldn't have that poor dog in that hot car. Um, what? I was sitting IN THE SAME CAR. It was 95 degrees. It's hot, but I wasn't dying and neither was she. Mind your own **** business.

I love that picture of the dog's mutilated feet that circulates around facebook and is actually a dog whose feet burned that badly after 10 hours on a roof. I'll eat my foot if any dog has actually gotten burns like that from walking on asphalt.

Also, I'm waiting for the day that some jerkoff breaks my boyfriend's window and my dog tears them a new one. And guess what? It'll probably be a bad mark on MY dog for defending her car.

I don't leave her in the car alone anymore, not because the heat will get to her, but because psychos might try things like that and my dog's reaction would be the end of her life as she knows it.

There have been a lot of deaths already this year, hot car or not, with some serious heat waves that are putting down even humans. It's fuel for the fire that has been going on over facebook and other social media sites. In one way, I understand it. In another way, I wish we were also teach people some basic deductive skills. Car on? Running AC? Windows down? In shade or full sun? Is the sun even up? Dogs seem in distress? Etc, so forth.

Such a pain now that we have ignorant hysterics who don't bother analyzing the situation. That sucks.

I saw that picture! People need to learn to use google before they blindly share on Facebook!

This woman called me a cruel animal abuser....

I called her a $%!% idiot who would be the reason the cops didn't take it seriously when a dog was really in trouble, and told her to back away from my truck.... And me.... I was shaking! I've never felt so close to clobbering someone before!

The cop was extremely irritated, her exact words were my house is hotter than this half the time and my two dogs and I are still alive!

I got calls like that frequently when I was an animal control officer. Not *once* was there a dog in distress. I had the mother of a friend of mine call one day when it was maybe 70 degrees.

"There's a car parked in the sun with a dog in it."

"Are the windows down at all?"

"Yes, but it is in the sun."

"Is the dog panting?"

"Not yet, but it is a big hairy dog. And the car is in the sun."

Sure, let me go arrest them right now. I'd usually drive to the car, check it out myself, and see the dog wasn't in distress. I'd park nearby and keep an eye out, and as long as the people came out relatively quickly (which they always did), I wouldn't even talk to them.

Meg is great for that sort of thing, because as soon as you leave her in the car, she generally curls up on the floor on the driver side. Nobody can ever see her. I'm more paranoid with Gusto, who stands up most of the time and pants more easily.

I get that, and even talked in another thread about my willingness to break a window if the dog was actually in trouble....

But these hysterical people, are only going to make the cops shrug and go "Oh another idiot" they're not going to take it seriously and someday a dog that really does need help will die

I'm in AZ and, because of situations like this, I'm afraid to even take the dogs on errands with me in the evenings, which was always something they enjoyed. I'm not stupid, and I'm certainly not going to put my dogs in danger. But because of people who overreact, I'm worried about leaving dogs for ten minutes at 9 at night while I run inside a store. Although I'd like to see someone approach the car while the tiny Chow was inside....loves her car, that one;)

I'd be curious to see the actual statistic of dogs dying in cars this summer. It sounds like something people would blow up for an agenda, ya know?

go Erin! I'm so glad she found that too.

For everyone else, sites like www.karmadecay.com let you investigate photos that might be reposted from somewhere else, with the story changed.

Check out the photos you see online. Lotta lies out there.

I feel like people are way more gung ho about it this year. I can say that I don't recall any dogs brought in to work in distress last year from being left in hot cars. I'm not sure what's behind the chicken little response this year.
