So I took Bailey for a swim in the river today and there was a woman there with a little Maltese-type dog. The dog is nice and I've seen her around.

Anyway, we got to chatting and Bailey finally decided that he had sufficiently upset the local wildlife and came over to say hello. The lady loved on him for a bit and then (with a big sigh) said, "But *WHY* would you shave down such a good looking Aussie?"

Aussies are the only breed that come in merle. Duh.

That's really funny though, people get so stuck on the color. I get asked (actually, usually told or am listening to them smugly inform their friends what my dog is) all the time if Traveler is a Catahoula. Umm, they are both merle but that's about where any similarities end. I think they are about as opposite of body type as can be.

That is too funny! Spots have to be the only thing they have in common!

People rarely guess Bailey (and in fact I had a hunting buddy that INSISTED he was a blackmouth...there's a reason they call them yella dogs...they don't come with spots!). But this lady was just a riot! She was so sad to see his beautiful Aussie coat ruined!

lol nice. I can't really talk. Saw a picture of a Schipperke head the other night and thought it was a Mudi. Granted the pic I saw was pretty much just the head and I keep running into a couple adorable Mudis and haven't seen a Schipperke in years buuuuut yeah. Oops.

Anyway...sorry to hear about your poor sad spotty dog's ruined coat :p

Haha! Yeah, people only see color. I still get asked All.The.Time if Juno is a boston terrier. Next time someone asks me that I'm just gonna tell them yes she is, and she was given performance enhancing drugs as a puppy and that's why she's so much bigger than all the other ones.

A lot of people who are not really into dogs (at least in this area) have never heard of Catahoulas or koolies. The only dogs they've ever seen in merle are Aussies, so they just associate the color with the breed I suppose.

Jack is frequently misidentified as a Chesapeake Bay retriever. It always baffles me because chocolate labs are pretty common here and chessies just aren't. On one trip to Petsmart we got asked by 3 separate people of he was a chessie.

I don't expect anyone to know what a Koolie is, if they did I might just keel over. But I do expect people not to tell me what my breed is. And everyone around here seems to think they're an expert on 'houlas and therefore my dog since he is one :p

And I don't think she expected anyone to know that he was a Catahoula but he most certainly doesn't look like an Aussie (or like he has a shaved coat for that matter) so it's kinda amusing how it really does just come down to the merle (Though in my case ton tell me Traveler is the same color as their ACD. Do you get that Houlahoops?) and that body type is just thrown out the window.

How many times do you get asked if he's a doberman?
(Sorry! Missed your question because Linds had the audacity to push it over to a new page with hers.)

All. The. Time.
That and Rottie. At least he doesn't get mistaken for a dachshund anymore.

Schaffer's a collie mix.
GSD's aren't allowed to be fluffy. Ever.

And Kailey's part pittie 'cuz she has wonky shoulders. Or mixed with dalmatian because of her spotty nose. Or part lab because of her body color.
Frankly, she's my little mutt puppy and half of the suggestions people throw at me could be correct, but their reasoning is all wrong.

Dally gets called an Aussie ALL. THE. TIME.
I used to think it was people just getting the breed names confused (both Australian ______, I can see how the average person could get them confused) but then people would actually start saying "My friend/my parents/I have/I used to have an Aussie and they look just like each other!"

Uhh ... what?

Quinn always gets her breed mistaken which isn't surprising. The weirdest has been TWO beagle guesses? My mom got so offended lol. More commonly she's a Toller or a Border Collie, we got a lot of Sheltie, Collie and Aussie guesses when she was younger too.

Most people guess mine to be a pomeranian, chihuahua, cavalier or papillon these days. Mostly pom more than anything else lately. When I first got Summer, she was a chihuahua most the time. We've occasionally gotten sheltie, and then even shih tzu a couple times, and pekignese more than once.

Pretty much looks like a pekignese.

I get off the wall designer breed guesses too a lot. Usually chipoo?

I've gotten some weird breed guesses before, especially for Rory. The usual is Brittany Spaniel. He's also been called a Borzoi, Golden Retriever (a big WTF!), and an Aussie.

Someone asked me if Chloe was a "Husky puppy"- apparently any dog with blue eyes has to be a Husky!

Tucker's been called a Yorkie- any blue and tan dog small furry dog is a Yorkie.

Emma's gotten Pomeranian, Papillon, "teacup" Chihuahua... usually "teacup" is the hardest to argue against.

I don't think Rylie has been called anything other than a Chihuahua before... but she's gotten "teacup" many times.

And the funniest is when we're walking the Chihuahuas together... people will ask "are they a family?!" People don't seem to understand that you can have multiple dogs without having bred them.

Dance gets a lot of "red nosed pit bull" guesses. Yep. Long coat and all. And if it's not that, people tend to either think she's a designer breed or an Aussie. Or a puppy. Everyone thinks she's a puppy and therefore want to be all up in her face and let their dog in her space so she gets used to other dogs (and Dance does not appreciate strange dogs in her space, or people for that matter). Oh, people...

At least the Dobermans don't get anything too weird regularly. Just the usual Greyhound, Great Dane or Rottweiler. The funniest was when I had both out together and somebody correctly identified Keira but was certain Ripley was a chocolate Lab. Mostly with them I just get comments on how little they are though.
