I think it bears mentioning that it was a voluntary recall. I don’t think there is any commercial dog food out there that hasn’t been involved in a recall at one point or another (though happy to be corrected on that). Personally I’m more comfortable with a company that will voluntarily recall their product than a company that waits for the FDA to force them to recall.
Off the top of my head, I believe that The Honest Kitchen, Precise, Fromm, NutriSource, and Earthborn (not sure about Midwestern Pet Foods on the whole, though) have never had a recall.

First, I would like to say: just because someone chooses to not feed a product from a company that has had recalls doesn't mean it is wrong to do so and that they are risking their pet's health by doing so, or that the company is not reputable.

I feed 4Health to my dogs and have been very pleased. I made the switch from TOTW and everybody adapted wonderfully. I chose not to feed Diamond just because when we switched Rose to Diamond Naturals she had HORRIBLE gas and I didn't want to risk that happening with my dogs. LOL

Chloe eats 4Health Potato and Salmon formula. Although it has some grains, it is a lot less grain heavy than the other formulas, and is also low in calories and fat which she needed. The only other food she's done well on was TOTW Wetlands and she transfered over to the 4HP&S food without a hitch.
Cynder, Gracie, and Cooper all eat the 4Health Chicken formula and I couldn't be happier with it.

It costs me $1.00/lb for Chloe's food and $0.80/lb for the rest of them.

But yeah, my troop eats a good bit. A 87 lb RR, a 45 lb APBT, a 25 lb lab mix puppy, and a 17 lb dachshund. And my RR and APBT and puppy all eat the same amount of food (4 cups a day) even though their weights are so different.
That doesn't add up correctly for me. Even when I had 6 dogs, we never went over 70lbs a month. And I had a 160lb Mastiff(hard keeper), 120lb Bullmastiff(hard keeper), 70lb GSD mix, 70lb Sibe, and two growing catahoula/lab/terrier mutts. And we fed at least 2 different formulas at any given time...never went over 70lbs of food a month. Well over 100lbs for 4 dogs and only one of them is a harder keeper is blowing my mind.

I think you might be overfeeding some of your dogs, or feeding a very poor quality food that isn't suited for their individual needs. Over feeding would be a good reason why your pup is constantly messing his kennel, too. Some dogs get fat when you overfeed, but some dogs get sick.

Getting a formula that actually MATCHES their nutritional needs will save you a lot more money than just getting a cheaper formula.

For example...

Zander ate 6 cups on TOTW, 4 cups on Fromm Surf n' Turf, 3 cups on Wellness CORE, and he is currently only eating 2 cups of Acana. Total per day. What he eats and how much of it has a huge impact on how he maintains weight, health, and energy.

What else have your dogs eaten, and how much of it did they have to eat per day in order to maintain weight? Which dogs got sick on what?

I don't mind doing the research for you to find something that suits your pack and your budget. I have nothing else to do today. Or tomorrow, for that matter! Lol.

I'm not saying that they are necessarily risking their pets health by doing so. But if she's changing any way why not try a company with a better track record? It may have the best people in the word running and working at the company but with so many recalls obviously they are doing something wrong.

This isn't even just one recall there have been multiple ones. So me, personally, I'd definitely be looking into alternatives.

I'm feeding Fromm Gold now...reasonable price.

I looked up Nutrisource (cheaper than ToTW/Earthborn, for us..and you can find coupons sometimes..) and they sell it at the Planet Pets you mentioned.

My dogs have only ever been on TOTW. Before that, Purina. So I'm hoping a food change will help me out.

The amounts I feed is what keeps weight on all of them. All of my dogs are pretty active, so I can almost understand why I have to feed so much.

1 cups equals 1/4 lb. (According to my own personal measurements of TOTW kibble.) so 4 cups is a whole lb. Since my RR eats 4 cups a day, he goes through a 30 lb bag a month all by himself. On days that he runs 3 miles with me, I give him an extra half cup. Since my others eat 4 cups as well, they also go through their own bag every month. Then my dachshund probably goes though 15 lbs a month...but that's rounding way up.

So I'd say each month I go through anywhere from 100 to 120 lbs of food.

Hopefully 4Health, I can feed less of. I'm going to try that and see, but I am still open to other suggestions

HOLY CRAP! My 150 lb. Fila bitch only eats 2 - 2.5 cups of EVO RM a day, sometimes 1.75 cups, and the 50 lb. APBT a cup, maybe cup and a half! The 60 lb. GSDX about the same as the APBT.

I'd love to switch from the EVO RM since Natura was bought out, but haven't been able to find anything that matches it protein/calorie wise and is remotely affordable. The closest was Acana, if I recall (I've looked at everything over and over again) and it was $80 a bag by the time you added tax. :(

Do you have anywhere around you that sells Natures Logic, Earthborn Holistic, or Natures Variety Instinct? The Instinct Beef & Lamb formula is going to be extremely similar to the EVO Red Meat, and it sells for about the same price here. Natures Logic and Earthborn sell for quite a bit less, but they also have less calories/protein, depending on formula.

Well, I can understand dogs with different metabolisms. Chloe, at 48 pounds, eats one cup of low calorie food a day. Cynder, at 30 pounds, eats two cups of mid calorie food a day. That's just 1/2 cup less than what our eighty pound Labrador ate a day. Kiba ate four cups a day, and he stayed very lean at around 60 pounds, I think.

If you need a high calorie food, maybe try the Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete? Or I think the 4Health has a similar formula. I think it is a 30/20 P/F ratio, too.

I feed Acana and so far it is the only brand that Judge does good on. He is a hard keeper and eats 4 cups a day. My old dog eats 1 cup a day and the APBT eats 1.5-2 cups a day.

Every dog is different but that's a lot of food.
