Cricket's poor hurty paw

I just took off Cricket's bandage wrap a little bit ago. It looks a lot better, but still not great.

She is still getting the benedryl since we just started that a couple days ago and I'm putting coconut oil on it for now and keeping a close eye on it.

I have a feeling we may have to make a vet trip if it doesn't look a whole lot better in a couple days. I have to wait to get paid to take her though but thank goodness I should be getting paid on Tuesday or Wednesday I think.

I'm still keeping the elizabethan collar on her to keep her from doing any further damage.

Any advice on anything I can try in the meantime that I haven't thought to try?

Also... Should I just let it breathe now or should it stay wrapped up to keep dirt and bacteria away?

EEEK.... hate to say, that would warrant a vet trip ASAP in my opinion.

Is there a way to keep it protected but not so bandaged? I'd think that needs to breathe a bit, it's pretty goopy.

I guess when you first talked about it I thought you meant like the pad of her foot and not the whole top :O

I'd definitely take that to the vet right away that looks really bad.

I could maybe try a clean sock? That would keep it protected but not so tightly bandaged. I can't afford to take her to the vet just yet. Usually I can no problem but of course we would be hurting a little this month

I have $100. The exam fee alone is $50. I did mention to Josh that I want to take her into the vet and he made a frustrated face. I could see if my boss would be willing to pay for it and take the money out of my paycheck though. She has funds for vet visits for clients dogs just in case.

I really wouldn't want anything on it with it looking that oozy. Is there anyway to keep her off chewing it and inside for a while to give it time to fully air out/breath?

She has an elizabethan collar to keep her from chewing it. She is only going outside right now to go potty and then is stuck in the crate because I don't want her wandering around getting stuff on her paw that could irritate it more. Ugh this is so frustrating. :/

That almost looks burn-like to me! You sure she didn't have access to any caustic chemicals accidentally?

As far as I know she didn't. I really hope not. I had originally thought maybe the apartment complex sprayed the grass. I can contact them tomorrow and ask.

Yea pesticide could be it - it looks ouchy whatever it is!

looks like a allergy flareup that has a secondary infection. probably a yeasty type. defiantly a doc visit needing to happen before it spreads . hugs , poor baby

It actually looks similar to the wound on Major's tailbone back last summer. My instructor and I were never positive on what it was, but we figured it was a fungal infection, or bacterial. It cleared up with daily cleaning and ointment application within a week or so.

I'll just echo what everyone else said with keeping it clean and letting it air out.. and trying to get her to a vet as soon as you can.

I'm going to try to get her to the vet this week if I can. I know Josh is going to probably be upset about it, but I'm worried about it getting worse.

exactly if it is infected antibiotics are needed or it will spread and become worse = bigger bill.

It doesn't look like a burn to me, but it does look infected. Dogs licking an already inflamed area can certainly make it nasty very quickly. (Aesop gets similar things in the spring..he's obviously allergic to something, though I have no idea what, and he's a stealthy licker, so sometimes by the time I see him lick, he's already got nastiness going on) I'd definitely leave it unwrapped (going by how many dogs we see for issues after having broken toenails and the like bandaged, I'm very anti foot bandaging) and perhaps clip a bit of the hair away from the goopiest areas to let as much air flow as possible.

She may end up requiring some antibiotics

Ya except he is the one that is in control of the money right now. I'm going to talk to him about it tonight. If he says no then he can forget about getting any of my next paycheck to go in the bank because regardless she is going to see a vet. I'm sure it hurts her so he will have to deal.

Definitely leave it unwrapped to let it dry out. KC had an infection similar to that last year on his paw also, they had to give him a shot of benedryl and some antibiotics.

Is there a way you can work something out with your vet, maybe pay for the vet visit up front and pay for the meds when you get paid?

That's actually a good idea. I'm going to call my vet tomorrow and see what they can do. I want to try and get her seen tomorrow if I can.

Oh yah, and I'd leave it unwrapped but watch her closely and make sure to clean it out. If you wrap it, it will just provide a damp environment which is... well... not good.
