Did anyone in the US get the crazy big census?

We got it and filled out the number of people and the basic stuff that is on the normal one. But we didn't answer the other questions.

I'm sorry our area is decently crime free but that doesn't matter. The cities near us are going to hell and I DO NOT want to tell them what days I am not home, what times I leave, what time I come back, how many of our cars do we take. I also DO NOT want to ask my dad or brother how much they make. And I don't want to add to my dad's stress by letting him know how little I make.

I looked up fines for not answering. I called them and just asked if I could pay the $100 or so for not answer and they refuse to take it. We've been getting 4-5 calls a day. A few are even before 8am.

Has anyone else got one of these? Did you feel comfortable actually giving out this info and am I just being paranoid? Because to me it honestly just sounds like they are trying to case people without having to drive to their houses.

I can't remember what was on it. I can check with my dad later since he is the one that did it I don't remember the exact info on it. I know a few of my friends got it too and it's super suspicious looking but according the new news in our area and our newspapers they are legit. He sent it in but only filled out basic stuff and didn't even put SSN down.

We sent it in a while back but they have been calling a lot within the last week.

also, the census doesn't have a fine. You don't HAVE to answer anything on it if you don't want to.

I would really look into it, that doesn't seem right.

The Census Bureau never:
Asks for your full social security number
If they're asking for your SSN it's NOT legit. You need to contact the census bureau.

There are things you have to fill out on the census but IIRC it's not a whole lot that's actually required... I know two years ago it was a BIG deal and they spent a lot of money chasing people down to get them to fill out the census. But there's also questions you aren't absolutely required to fill out...

our 10 year census is voluntary... so they hire people to walk around door to door and stand in front of grocery stores to try to convince people to fill it out. We would prob save a lot of money if they made it mandatory with a fine.

ok THANK YOU for this. I asked my dad he said they DID ask for it but he didn't give them it and didn't even give birthdays because he was so unsure about it.

Yeah, there's something wrong there. The census asked questions like names and genders of who is in the house, but if we had ten undocumented people renting our spare room...we don't include it and nobody is going to do a house check. There's something fishy with what you're talking about.

Thats odd...

and certainly doesn't seem legit.

Though here you do have to pay a fine if you don't answer the questions.

I called the number for the census people in the gov website today. They said that it's called the american community survey and we are required to answer it. I basically told them there was no way in hell they were getting the info that the survey asked and to just send me my fine.

Don't do it. They did that in my city a little while ago...it was on the news, too. I refused to do it and didn't get a fine or anything. You are not legally required to fill it out and the fine is just a bluff. They can't force that info out of you.

I agree! Glad you guys didn't cooperate! It's far too dangerous these days......noway I'm giving sensitive information like that to random people.

EDIT:
OMG.........I ran a quick search online because this got my curiosity up.

A snip from a letter to a news paper discussing things they wanted to know......Found at this link: http://www.cxliv.org/2006/02/03/american_community_survey.php

For example, under "Housing" you are asked how many vehicles you have; monthly fuel, water, and electricity costs; monthly rent or mortgage; estimated value of your property and annual property insurance. Forty-two questions are listed to be answered by each person in your household.

Disturbing questions in this section include a question asking if you have any physical, mental, or emotional conditions that would make it difficult for you to go shopping or go outside the home, involvement of the grandparents in raising the children, and the exact time you leave for work and name of your employer......
I don't see how in the &%$ they can ask some of those questions, there are LAWS covering some of those things (like disabilities)

Do they actually find people who'll answer this stuff? REALLY? I can tell you right now there is NOWAY IN HE!! I'll be filling it out.........bring on the fine, then good luck getting me to pay it easily.

I'll pay a lawyer THOUSANDS before I give up and pay a $100.00 fine for that!!!! Sometimes the principle is worth WAY more than the $$$

I didn't answer any of those questions except how many live here. they will call and nag you to death. (I never answered, but had the messages on my machine) one day I picked up and bluntly told the man that I didn't answer because the questions were too stupid. (and they are, wasn't just me being snotty. lol) no business but mine if I have a sink, stove, refrigerator. nor if I have difficulty showering. nor when we leave for work, etc. he was darn snotty with me, but that finally ended it. oh sure he gave me a big spill about how all those questions help my community. I laughed and said nothing there was going to help my rural area. the end. so yes, he tried to bully, but I still didn't answer. :)
