Holy blood.

Jackson was running and swimming ALL day Saturday, and doing lots of running around the pool (cement) and he ended up somehow breaking one of his front nails past the quick.

We've never had it happen before - I had noticed him kind of licking his paw while I was in the pool, but thought maybe he just had something stuck in there. Then I got out and saw him still doing it. Then I saw a trail of blood behind him walking and was like WTF?!

So I went and grabbed him and blood was just pouring all over the place, lol. my shirt looked like I had just murdered somebody. When I realized it was his itty bitty nail. Who knew a nail could bleed so much?

Anyways we had nothing to put on it (no corn starch, which I read you're supposed to use, and no flour) and no quick-stop. So I kinda just wrapped it in a towel and my dad went out to the store to pick up some stuff, but it stopped bleeding on it's own.

I think maybe he had sort of a hang nail and was chewing on it and ripped it off, which is what caused it to start bleeding.

It's now Monday morning, and he's still occasionally licking it... is that normal? I don't think it's terribly bothering him, but it is a little bit.

Also, oh how I LOVE the pool - this dog is exhausted. Thursday, Friday, Saturday were spent outside almost all day and swimming a LOT. I swear he's still tired from it. He was so lazy all day yesterday.

I HATE when that happens (if you have baby powder, that's usually made using corn starch and I use that in a pinch). I've had that happen and been cleaning blood off the ceiling, it amazes me how much those things can bleed.

I've noticed they stay tender for a little bit, but I would just use your judgement on how it looks. Keep it clean, maybe soak it a bit in warm water.

Okay, then it probably is just tender a bit. I don't see the nail cracked anywhere else or anything.

I wasn't sure if I should take him for a walk or not, as if it's bothering him, I don't want to "force" him to be walking. I have to go let out a friends dog so was debating on dog park or walk, lol... it's probably no big deal, but... just don't wanna make him any more uncomfortable.

Running will likely reopen it, so be careful where you go for a few days. When Maggie quicked a nail before an agility trial I used clear nail polish on it after it clotted and that seemed to help prevent it reopening.

I hate nails! HATE!!! Mitsu tore a nail out on her back left paw. The bloody thing would not stop bleeding. We eventually just wrapped it up as tight as we could and left it until it eventually stopped and then kept on changing the bandages every day. Then a few weeks later I accidentally cut her nail way to short and it bled like no body's buisness and of course that's when we just moved into our new house and we didn't have anything. And then on the same exact foot she sliced her paw open. Sigh!!

Oh and I've used a bar if soap to clog a bleeding toe. Works like a charm

UGH, that sounds awful. Thankfully Jackson's stopped after, like, 15-20 minutes for the most part. But, poor Mitsu.

Good advice for the future though - had no idea about powder, nail polish or soap.

He was still acting like it was bothering him, so I gave him a half of a pain pill, lol. I had some left over from his dental surgery and figured half wouldn't hurt - if he was in any kind of pain. I could just tell he wasn't fully himself and it was bothering him.

Just a clarification - nail polish probably shouldn't be used to *stop* the bleeding (I doubt it would work well and would sting horribly) but it does work to provide a bit of protection afterward, especially with active dogs.
